Roof Farm Cottage is a delightful converted barn with spectacular views, close to the village of Gunnerside, Swaledale, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The cottage has a south-facing garden, including patio, overlooking the River Swale and the stunning countryside with its walled meadows and barns. The village of Gunnerside is at the centre of Swaledale and is the ideal base for exploring one of the finest unspoilt dales with its famous lead mining history. There are an abundance of breathtaking walks straight from the door of the cottage, with The Pennine Way and Coast to Coast Path close by.

Gunnerside - five minutes walk away - has the Kings Head, a refurbished pub/restaurant which provides lunch and evening meals, a licensed tea room/bistro and a visiting fish and chip van on a Friday evening. In the nearby village of Muker there is the Farmers Arms, which also provides lunch and evening meals and a fine selection of local beers. Heading in the other direction, approximately one mile away, is a gastro pub, the Punch Bowl, in Low Row. The village of Reeth is only six miles away and offers further pubs, tea shops, newsagents, general stores, a garage and a Post Office. Keen cyclists can rent bikes from the Dales Bike Centre at Fremington, which is seven miles away. Those with a sense of adventure can visit the highest pub in England, Tan Hill Inn, which is ten miles away.

Roof Farm Cottage is perfectly situated for discovering this beautiful area, or just relaxing. The converted barn sleeps four in two bedrooms, has a bathroom with a separate shower room, kitchen / diner and lounge, with fantastic views from all windows. The cottage provides year-round warm and comfortable accommodation. All linen and towels are provided, together with all fuel. There is a no smoking policy in the property and one medium to small well-behaved dog may be kept downstairs by prior arrangement with the owner. The cottage is professionally cleaned on changeover day and there is secure private parking for two vehicles next to the cottage.

The description does not do this cottage justice- a perfect location within swaledale. Superb views. One of the nicest bedrooms we have ever stayed in. We visited with our two preschoolers- so enjoyed kites/dams/tiny tiny walks and poohsticks. We also enjoyed the Reeth Show and utilised the little bus service for linear walks.

The cottage itself was perfectly clean and all the little details thought of. Especially kind details for the children.

Thank you so much, we felt really well looked after and rested :-)

Another wonderful holiday at Roof Farm Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Leafing through the Guest Book we noticed that several guests keep coming back to Roof Farm Cottage and that is no surprise at all! We spent our annual summer holidays for two years in a row in this lovely cottage and just like last year we were sad to leave after two wonderful weeks with great weather and lots of walks, some of them starting from the door. We discovered the travelling chippy (great!) and also some great new walks. Thank you Rob and Sally for letting us enjoy this lovely cottage! and please do give our best wishes to our friends at the King's Head, we spent many a pleasant evening there enjoying the delicious food and the good company.

We had a wonderful week! The cottage is cosy and warm and has everything you need to for a comfortable and happy stay. The views are breathtaking and it's a joy having the sheep and newborn lambs just outside the door! We had beautiful weather and were able to eat outside on the terrace for 3 days. We loved the Kings Head pub in Gunnerside (5 minutes walk) which is friendly and serves the best chips we have ever tasted! Excellent menu. Our Border Collie Gracie was so happy with stunning walks straight from the door. Rob and Sally, you made our holiday perfect in every way, from the moment we contacted you right until we had vacated your lovely cottage. Thank you. We highly recommend this beautiful little cottage to anyone who is thinking of a holiday in Swaledale.

The cottage had everything we hoped for and more!

Booking was completely hassle free and the owners so helpful and patient with my questions.. This lovely cosy cottage was even better than it sounded, so well equipped I kept discovering new items until the last day! Lots of extras provided. Lovely spacious lounge, workable kitchen ( we ate in most nights) and brilliant hot water /heating system. Everywhere tastefully decorated, well maintained, clean and user-friendly. The views were superb, we could have sat in the garden for hours! Watch the sunrise from the bedroom windows and the sunset from the lounge. Quiet and peaceful as promised. Amazing selection of games, books and CDs, great hi-fi too. Local pub/tea room staff were welcoming and the fish and chips from the travelling chippy on Friday night were worth braving the midges for :-) The surrounding area has so much to offer as well. Would love to return and wouldn't hesitate to recommend. Thanks Rob and Sally for offering your lovely property to others to enjoy.

A gem in Gunnerside

  • 5 of 5

Roof Farm Cottage is a lovely, cosy cottage with stunning views all around. The rooms are comfortable and the kitchen has everything you might need. Excellent beds, too. The cottage was spotlessly clean and in impeccable order. Nice little patio for al fresco dining and enjoying the hills and wildlife. From our very first enquiry, we found the owners to be charming and extremely helpful. We enjoyed the bistro and pub, both at walking distance, for its excellent food and warm welcome. We had the most wonderful time, and so did our dog. This is certainly a cottage we would recommend.
