About fran button

Mike and Fran

Mike is from Chester originally and I am from East Anglia. We lived for 14 years in North Wales before buying our house in Spain and moving here a few years later when our son was at University.

We enjoy the Spanish way of life, the people, the fiestas, the fabulous food, the country walks and our animals on our land. We grow all our vegetables and barter some for firewood or fresh goat's cheese. Mike plays golf in Rio Tinto and I teach English as a second language to children and adults in the village.

We love to travel and we both enjoy sports, especially football, golf, tennis and I also like yoga.

Why fran button chose Corteconcepción

Mike and I run our townhouse in Corteconcepcion. We are passionate about the people and the countryside here in the Sierras de Aracena. We love to share that passion with our guests and to ensure you have a true break away from your home. We understand that you work hard for your holiday and rural Spain is the ideal place to relax and chill.

We came to live here in 2005 and now live the 'simple' life with sheep, chickens, olives and our huge vegetable garden all of which we are happy to share with guests.

The house we rent out is close to our house and we are happy to help our guests when they are here and before they come if we can.

What makes this house unique

Your house is in a great location, well within walking distance to Bar Jesus and the local square. You will have your own sun trap of a terrace you are more than welcome to sit in our garden where you will feel you are in the middle of the countryside.

We fell in love with the village and the people on our first visit. The people in this village are just amazing, so warm and friendly, even if you cannot speak a word of Spanish. They will stop and chat anytime of the day and there really are no language barriers here. They welcome you to local fiestas such as San Juan, with the fire jumping, or Fiesta of the Road where you can watch or join in with the Pasa Doble or Flamenco. Great fun with real charm too.

If you love to walk or birdwatch the area is ideal and for those gourmets who love great food this is definitely the place to come. With the Jamon from a world winner for Great Taste located in the village you will enjoy the best. You can also take a tour of the family run 200 year old Jamon factory, still using traditional methods. The Sierra air is the key ingredient for the special flavour of the meat.

Dave and Jan, New Brunswick, Canada, October 2013

Thank you so much for a wonderful 9 days. Our holiday has been so relaxing that in one way we feel we have been here forever. Unfortunately in another, as we are leaving today, time has rocketed by. We have enjoyed everything: the walks that you suggested, and the walk with you and Penny and Dave; the food from your garden and the food in the village. Fantastic Sunday lunch(got home at 6pm!) with you at Bar Javier yesterday. Lovely tapas a few nights ago at Bar Jesus where none of us seemed to understand a single word we were saying but a lot of laughing. Lovely friendly people throughout the region. Hasta la vista.

Julie and Richard, USA.April 2013

Thank you for providing one of the most relaxing places we have ever stayed in. The accommodation is charming. Fran and Mike are wonderful hosts and will take great care of you!!.

One Bed Townhouse Set in a Beautiful Rural Village in Andalucia
average rating of 4.894737 based on 20 reviews

Nicely converted/renovated townhouse in a beautiful/typical Spanish village.

  • 5 of 5

Perfect location for a couple like us. The accommodation itself has been thoughtfully converted/renovated to a high standard, and there was everything there that we needed. Unlike some self catering places, the kitchen is stocked with all the necessaries (oil, salt, pepper, washing up liquid etc), and combined with the very generous 'welcome' pack, this allowed us to hit the ground running, and not waste our time or money unnecessarily. Fran and Mike are extremely knowledgeable and well connected in the village, and did everything they could to make sure we enjoyed our stay. Nothing is too much trouble for them. The area is fascinating, beautiful and full of character, from the abundant wildlife to the beautiful (and very tasty) black pigs responsible for the famous Jamon Iberico. We were blessed with fine weather so sat round in the sunshine for long periods (drinking wine), but there's loads to see within a fairly small radius. Rural Spain at its very best and we will undoubtedly be back. Hasta pronto!

Great Location, Great House & Fantastic Hosts

  • 5 of 5

The house is located in a very quiet street; there is no passing traffic due to the narrowness of the street. All the amenities are within walking distance of the house. The nearest bar/restaurant is the La Barcina and I would whole heartedly recommend it; Anna, the owner, was genuinely welcoming.

The house is very comfortable and extremely well equipped; we particularly liked the wood burning stove although it was not cold during our stay. The cupboards were well stocked with basics and Fran & Mike had provided us with bread, milk, eggs, orange juice and beer and wine. The homemade marmalade was also excellent. There is a plethora of information about the area; maps, guide books etc. and plenty of books to read if so desired.

Fran & Mike were excellent; Fran met us on our arrival and showed us to the house. She had already arranged a jamon Iberico tour at Eirez in Corteconcepcion and contacted a vet in Aracena to administer the legally required tapeworm tablets for our dog's re-entry back into the UK. We drove to Seville but was a bit worried because driving there is a nightmare on the busy roads that filter from four lanes in to two. Mike gave me easy to follow parking instructions that made it relatively easy; he was also quick to resolve a hot water problem we encountered. We had a lovely meal with them both and Cervantes, their dog, on our last night and may have slightly over indulged with the alcohol. We had intended departing for Calais at about 6 or 7am but it after 10:00 when we hit the road.

All in all we had a very enjoyable stay in Corteconcepcion; the weather was fairly kind to us and we got out on a few walks. We completed a circular walk to Aracena on the senderos and a shorter walk from Los Marines to Fuenteheridos. We also had a drive down to lake Aracena which was also pleasant.

I would recommend the Jamon Iberico tour at Eirez in Corteconcepcion. Our English speaking guide, Jesus, was extremely knowledgeable. The jamon and wine tasting was really good.

We ate at Javiers bar/restaurant where the Solomillo was excellent.

Thanks to you both.

Just great. A gem.

  • 5 of 5

Super place to stay. Fran and Mike are most welcoming and totally helpful. Fran’s ‘take aways’, or rather ‘bought to you’ are just excellent. No problems at all and the log fire is wonderfully warming when it’s cold outside. Smashing walks. The welcome beers, wine and homemade bread were the icing on a very special cake. In short highly recommended.

Clean comfortable well equipped accommodation in a great small town with exceptional hosts

  • 5 of 5

The location is spot on the village is peaceful charming and very Spanish but there are numerous bars and restaurants to keep you satisfied if eating out is your thing.

The villa itself is clean and exceptionally well equipped with comfortable sofas beds and soft furnishings.

There is lots to do in the area, you can follow many walks from the door or there are various small towns to visit

Overall you will experience the real rural Spain if you travel to this region and will doubtless want to return

When we return it will certainly be to the same accommodation as the warm welcome received made our stay extra special.

As you say, one of the keys to this enjoyment are the wonderful and friendly local people who live life in at such a tranquil and mellow pace. Simply fabulous.....

  • 5 of 5

Our wish list when planning this holiday: "A change from our normal big city, bright lights holiday destinations; and a place where we can enjoy the simple things in life..... great natural beauty, tranquility, fabulous food and maybe the odd glass of vino" Well! - What can I say - Corteconcepcion, this fabulous region, the gastronomy, the amazing town house and the wonderful hosts Fran and Mike all came together to make our wishes come true by the bucket load. From the moment we landed in Seville we knew we were in good hands with the reassuring whattsapp message just checking we were here safe and sound and holding out a metaphorical hand to guide us on our journey; - along with the detailed driving directions provide by email in the preceding week. On our arrival in Corteconcepcion quite late into the evening, Fran and Mike were their to greet us. We were met with the warmth and hospitality you would expect if visiting a long lost relative! - a very special moment and one that set us at ease from the get go. In the days that followed, we visited the local villages - all with their own very unique character. The mining attraction of 'Rio Tinto' was great day out with a train ride, museum and a cave tour. We also toured the Jamon factory in Corteconcepcion itself. The tour starts with a visit to the pigs and ends with a fabulous tasting experience with wine at the end and a factory tour in-between - highly recommended! Aracena the local town is well established and has a great butchers shop for the local speciality pork products and more besides and we became regulars there very quickly. It also has a well stocked supermarket for all the provisions you may want if self catering is important for you, as it was for us. The town of Aracena itself has great history and culture to explore, as well as numerous restaurants and bars with lots of character, for alfresco dining and people watching. The area of Corteconcepcion is ideal for walking and one of the highlights of our stay was a walk with Fran one morning. On that walk Fran shared countless facts about the forna and flora, history, heritage and wildlife of the area and the views along the way were just breath-taking. Needless to say it wasn't the last walk we had during our stay. Corteconcepcion will not be for everyone -- It was definitely a million miles away from our usual holidays in Dubai, Las Vegas and London but rarely have we returned from a holiday feeling so blessed. Simply fabulous!

Special interest holidays:

There are many stunning senderos or old mule trails across the Sierras which offer easy, medium and difficult tracks. You are welcome to use our guides and maps and we are happy to also provide walking guided tours. Along the tracks there is a multitude of bird-life to enjoy including the colourful European bee-eaters, kingfishers, eagles and kites and woodpeckers. You will also see how the black pigs live in the countryside seeking out their favourite food, the acorns.

For those who enjoy Spanish food we offer cooking classes as well as dinners and breakfasts. But if you want to learn a little Spanish on your trip we are happy to give you some conversation classes. Fees for these are payable locally and are tailor made to your needs.

There are stunning beaches on the Costa de la Luz about an hour away but for those who like to swim, the local Lake is just 10 minutes away by car and is warm and safe. No motor sports are allowed and during the week it is peaceful and relaxing. At the weekend it is a busy location and the bar and restaurant at a promontory serves Spanish tapas and meals. It is possible to do some fishing here too, for carp and barbel.

The nearest airport is Seville and direct flights are from Dublin, Gatwick or Stansted and the easy drive to us takes just less than an hour on good roads with little traffic. If you are not hiring a car, there is a bus service from Seville and we are happy to pick you up from Aracena. Flights from other regional airports go to Malaga and Faro and there are enjoyable and easy drives from both. We provide detailed directions for you from airports as well as car hire companies used by our guests.

There are many places to go and enjoy in the Sierras and there are always fiestas and romerias. A cultural calendar of local events is in the house along with maps and directions. Aracena is 7k away and for those interested in Roman history, Merida is an hour's drive north and a great place to see Roman remains, especially the stunning amphitheatre. More locally there are public swimming pools, Moorish villages, terrific walks for all levels, the lake and superb freshly cooked food.

Further Details:

What makes this holiday so enjoyable is the location, the local people and the opportunity to experience and participate in the real Spain. The reviews on Trip Advisor will give you a better flavour of what to expect than all the narrative we can write here.
