We have stayed at this cottage four different times when holidaying in Pembrokeshire. When you have found perfection why keep looking.

The cottage is beautifully maintained and is always clean and tidy upon arrival. The kitchen is fully equipped if you want to prepare/cook food and there are instructions on how everything works if you can't quite work it out first time.

There are two showers on the first floor, which is a must if you are holidaying with kids. One of the showers is over a bath if you want to indulge. The bedrooms are light, fresh and there is plenty of room to accommodate. Two double bedrooms on the second floor and two twin beds in the first floor bedroom. There is plenty of room to put up a travel cot as well if you are taking a little one.

If you are unlucky with weather there is a tv and the owners leave plenty of books and board games to amuse everyone.

The cottage is situated in Lower Solva and is perfect for walks along the coastal paths or family holidays down on the beach. There are 3 pubs with the Ship Inn and The Harbour being child friendly and the Cambrian being the place for the adults to treat themselves to some posh nosh, child free.

The location is Solva is perfect for all holiday types. If you're looking for days down on the beach you are no more than 10 minutes drive from Newgale which is a beautiful long sandy beach. If you love walks and exploring, then you are just 2 minutes from the coastal path, which will lead you to some "hidden" beaches and bays which are not accessible by car.

St Davids is just 5 minutes drive from Solva and there is the Cathedral and shops to explore if you need a break from the sea and sand. About 45 minutes drive from the cottage is Follyfoot Zoo and this is a must see if you have children. There are plenty of indoor and outdoor activities to keep everyone happy for a whole day and is a good choice if again the weather looks a bit dodgy.

We keep returning not just because we love the area but the cottage is like the dream home you wish you had with a lottery win. The Owners clearly care and love this home and this cottage and it's location make you feel that the holiday has started as soon as you walk through the door.

The only reservation I have about writing this review is that we just may have made it that much harder to get a booking in the future. If you do holiday here, I am sure you will want to return again. Definitely recommended.

Owner's Response: Mark, thank you so much for your wonderful review.... The cottage has obviously hooked you in the same way that it did us nearly 10 years ago when we spent our first holiday in it. I'm really pleased that as you've stayed both before and since we've owned it you can see we are trying to maintain the standard to provide comfortable and well equipped accommodation. If ever we need to sell you'll be first on my list to contact!!! I look forward to welcoming you back again, no doubt, at some time in the future. Many thanks, Gill.

Owner's Response: Hi Nick, Thank you for taking the time to post a review and I'm so glad you and your friends enjoyed your stay at the cottage. In an ideal world the cottage would have a wonderful view over the harbour but in reality it is only a few paces from it and does benefit from being right in the middle of everything else Solva has to offer. Thank you again for you comments and hopefully you'll join the large proportion of our guests who come back over the years. All the best, Gill

Home from home retreat

  • 4 of 5

The Mariners was a great location to explore this fabulous part of Pembrokeshire and the city of St.David's.

Situated in the picturesque village of Solva, blessed with 3 pubs with good food ,this homely cottage proved to be a lovely retreat for our short stay and only wish it could have longer.

Fabulous estuary and harbour with a small beach, popular with dog lovers. Will look forward to our return and sample the delicious food in the cambrian and harbour inn.

Owner's Response: Kevin, I'm so glad you and your family enjoyed your stay and hope that celebrating your wife's birthday, together with her parents, made it a special weekend. The cottage isn't huge, so it's cosy for two but also offers plenty of space for family get togethers, like yours. We have several guests, who after staying with their children, have returned with grandparents for future holidays as the area really does suit all ages. In fact, last year, one guest came back to the cottage with her own children after holidaying in it with her parents back in the 80's! Thank you for your review and hopefully we'll be able to welcome you back to the cottage in the future. Gill

From the Owner

We spent a lovely holiday in 2 The Mariners back in 2006 and have returned to Solva most years since then, staying in many of the other cottages as no.2 was always booked! One weekend in February 2010 we were staying in a friends apartment in upper Solva and saw that the cottage was up for sale....our hearts got the better of our heads and we became the new owners in July of that year. We run a business in Cardiff which is seasonal and busy during the summer, so we use the cottage ourselves in the quieter winter months. It's not good for the cottage, or the village, to leave it empty so we continue to rent it out, hoping that our guests will love the area as much as we do and find the cottage a comfortable "home from home"

From the Owner

The cottage is right in the middle of lower Solva so is well placed for the galleries, shop, pubs and cafés. The harbour and beach are minutes away, as well as the coastal path. The local buses stop right outside the cottage so it's easy to walk and catch the bus back...or vice versa... The lovely city of St. Davids one way with its shops, restaurants, ice cream(!!!!) or the fabulous, long surfers beach at Newgale in the other. There is something in the area for all ages.... Within 45 min drive you can get to Oakwood for the older children, or Folly Farm for the younger members of the family.... Heatherton, Manor Park and Tenby are just an hour away. A RIB boat ride around Ramsey is a must, or the boat trip to Skomer to see the puffins... Beautiful beaches in either direction.
