About Eileen Gilbert

Although Gardener's Cottage is in the garden of our home West Stow Hall it is totally private. We will not be breathing down your neck but are on hand if any questions or problems arise. I run the Hall as a Wolsey Lodge B&B while my husband works in London. We love the history and beauty of the Hall and Suffolk in general and enjoy seeing others discover how lovely this part of the world is and how much there is do.

Our dog, Monty, a border coliie cross is great. Very friendly and happy to accompany everyone every where. He is great when taken for walks as very obedient and - so far- has always returned when called!

New hens will be arriving shortly and we are happy for children to help with the egg collecting while there is apple picking in the autumn!

The perfect country retreat!

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I needed a base near Bury St. Edmunds whilst visiting from the US for a few days and after looking at several options, we chose the country cottage. My daughter loves horses and it was an unexpected bonus that West Stow Hall is right next to a horse farm. Eileen was very accommodating and made us feel like one of the family. I definitely recommend the country cottage if you are looking for a cozy, peaceful place to stay.

Gardner's Cottage was perfect

  • 5 of 5

Mrs. Gilbert is a wonderful hostess. Everything at Gardner's Cottage was well organized, clean, and the owner was easy to reach in case of questions. The cottage had plenty of space for our family and the "extra" attention to detail such as decorating for Christmas (including a decorated tree) made our stay very special. We would love to spend another holiday here!

Just right!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage had everything we needed, was in a lovely location with a very pretty, enclosed garden and would certainly recommend. It was a pleasure to meet Eileen and be greeted by Monty the dog each time we arrived back. If I was being really picky we found the shower a bit weak and the towels a tad tired but they did the job. Thank you for being so welcoming.

Stansted and Norwich are our nearest airports. Both are approx. a one hour drive. West Stow is about 1hour 30 mins from Harwich. The closest station is Bury St Edmunds which is 20mins by car. A car is recommended though there are bus services from nearby villages to Bury

It is 5 miles to Bury St Edmunds, 16 miles to Newmarket, 17miles to Lavenham, 30 miles to Cambridge, and 59 miles to Aldeburgh and Southwold.

Further Details:

We are lucky in having several good pubs and nice places to eat near to West Stow such as The Cadogan at Ingham and the Organic café at Fornham All Saints. The well know Anglo-Saxon village is a short walk away while trout fishing is available at the bottom of the drive. Go Ape which has an amazing tree top walkways is a short drive as is Centre Parcs at Elvedon, lovely for a spa! There is also a lovely garden Fuller's Mill in the village. Bury St Edmunds has excellent shops, restaurants and pubs as well as two cinemas, the Arena which hosts a wide variety of musical events and a lovely Regency theatre.
