Overview

About the property

3 bedroom cottage with large Inglenook Fireplace, & Garden with pretty Summerhouse

Old Turnpike Cottage (sleeping up to 6), appeared as their "Thatched Property of the Week" in the Sunday Times - a charming traditional stone, thatched cottage in the pretty Wiltshire village of Teffont which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. It has a large inglenook fireplace and its own private south facing lawned garden with great views and a summerhouse. There are good transport links (Tisbury railway station is 4.4 miles away) and the village is 2.5 miles from the A303. Nearby there are great walks, country pubs, a National Trust property (Dinton Park & Philipps House) beautiful views of the English countryside. It is ideally situated for exploring all the local attractions of Stonehenge, Old Sarum, Salisbury Cathedral, Wilton House and the Nadder Valley which is well known for its fishing. Bath is a little further away and Bournemouth and its beaches about one hour's drive.

Why Andy Graham chose Teffont

We love the area and it is close to family.

What makes this cottage unique

There is a pop up bakery on a Saturday in the village hall and a country house hotel (Howards' House), a short walk away. Teffont is a beautiful village and has its own website with information on walks, history etc:

Children: The cottage is compact with quite steep stairs and a large fireplace, so it may not be suitable for very small children, but happy to discuss! Dogs: Please contact us if you wish to bring a well behaved dog. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The house is cleaned thoroughly prior to your arrival. Bed linen and towels can be included by prior arrangement at an extra cost of £12.50 per person per visit/week. Logs: There will be a full log basket by the fire for your visit. Additional logs can be used from the small log store outside the back door. Outside: As well as a pretty front garden, there is a very good sized garden at the rear with views across fields. At the far end is a Summerhouse with a table and chairs and beyond that 2 sheds and our personal log store. There is a kitchen terrace with an outside table and benches that can comfortably seat 6-8 people. Other: Off street parking for one car. Other cars can be parked opposite

Beautifully equipped cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage has beautiful furniture in a modern country style. It is well equipped and has a wonderful garden.

The sleeping rooms are very cosy with comfortable beds and the entire cottage is a place were we enjoyed staying during the sometimes cold weather.

As it is at a remote location it is very quiet, that we appreciated very much.

We went to visit Bath, Swanage and other locations that are about 1 hour drive from the cottage.

country escape

The Old Turnpike Cottage is a wonderful period thatched cottage in a beautiful village and an area of outstanding natural beauty. Yet it is centrally located to visit many good places within an hours drive.

Of course it is warm and cozy, but more than that it is set up with everything you need and so is easy to live in. Now I can happily say I have learned how to use an aga cooker. It was a great experience in a picture book thatched cottage.

ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!

  • 5 of 5

I went and stayed at the beautiful Old Turnpike Cottage with some friends for a long weekend in October 2017.

The cottage was equipped with absolutely everything we could have needed and wanted.

The interior of the cottage is exquisitely done up and it is so cosy.

All of the beds in the house are especially comfortable which I think is very important (as someone who suffers from a bad back).

The area is also really beautiful with a lot to offer, and we also all found it geographically very easy to get to as well.

I am very much looking forward to planning my next visit to Old Turnpike!

Cosy cottage

  • 4 of 5

Our stay was in mid winter but with fire roaring away the cottage was cosy. Lovely village where you could forget what century you were in. One criticism was that the mattress was too hard for us.

Owner's Response: Hi Jeff, I'm so sorry that you found the mattress was too hard - the mattresses are all special Hypnos ones, and we've only had very positive comments about the comfort of the beds up until now, but I can appreciate how having a back condition can sometimes make sleeping in a different bed uncomfortable, so apologies again.
