Superb, village house with private pool & large, sunny, secluded courtyard

Overview

Property

Updated: 01-Dec-2016
House in Gabian, Nr. Pezenas, Herault, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - Village Location Close To Historic Market Towns, Vineyards, Rivers And Beautiful Sandy Beaches

Our charming, spacious traditional French 'Maison de Village' is in a medieval, wine growing village at the edge of the Haut Languedoc National Park within easy reach of the coast, the Canal du Midi and the Herault and Orb valleys. It provides an excellent base for exploring this beautiful area of France with its medieval towns. Our three storey house has high ceilings and remains cool in the height of summer. The large, secluded courtyard with swimming pool enjoys a sunny aspect but there is also ample shade for those who prefer it. In the evening candlelight & pool lighting makes it the perfect setting for ambient dining al fresco. There is a stone BBQ, table and seating for more than ten people and smaller tables dotted around the courtyard. Our village has a mini supermarket, grocer, baker (just a one stroll for your warm morning croissants!), post office, pharmacy, hairdresser, church, playground, bar/restaurant and local wine 'caves' which sell their own wines. Excellent, larger Super U (with petrol, chemist, post office & cash point) is just 5 minutes drive away in Roujan.

About the Owner

Back in 2002 four of us did what many people might say we'd be mad to do....buy a house whilst on holiday and buy a house with friends! We just couldn't resist! We fell in love with the whole area...our village...our house! We love the sun, the outstanding beauty of the Haut National Park, the miles of long sandy beaches, the tranquil Canal du Midi, the local wines, the medieval towns and markets...the list is endless.

We come over whenever we can. Retirement happily means two of us are no longer governed by school holidays! Bliss. We enjoy the different seasons in the village...the stunning wild flowers in Spring...the long, warm Summer evenings, the smell of wine that lingers in the air during the vendange in August and September.

We hope you will enjoy the area as much as we do

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our group of 6 enjoyed a wonderful holiday in this lovely 19th century 'maison de village'. The house is well equipped with cool, spacious rooms and a sunny south-facing paved courtyard with a small pool and plenty of shade from a beautiful mulberry tree and parasols. A lovely spot for relaxing evenings. Bedding and towels are all provided but bring an extra for beach and swimming. The owners provided loads of information and maps to help us make the most of our too short stay!

Chris

This is a lovely airy house. Big rooms and well equipped. The large private courtyard garden and pool are perfect for lazy days and BBQ. Gabian is ideally situated to explore surrounding countryside.

Marieke

My third visit here & another fabulous holiday in a lovely house in a beautiful part of France. The sun, the evenings on the patio, Pezenas market on Saturday morning, swimming in the sea and at Barrages des Olivettes nearby and at the Pont de Diablo were all real high spots.

Gorgeous house in wine country

  • 5 of 5

This is a truly gorgeous house in a delightful village, in the heart of Herault wine country. We were blessed with fabulous weather for our stay, so pretty much lived out in the stunning courtyard, which has everything you need - pretty pool, barbecue, roomy dining table - as well as being full of flowers and herbs. Lovely ! But you can tell that this house would be ideal for any time of the year, even for a much bigger group than we were. It has great bedrooms ( with comfy beds), smart bathrooms, a really cosy sitting room and a huge dining room. The kitchen has everything you need to cook up a storm, and yet all the antique charm of this lovely house has not been sacrificed to the mod cons. This house has a lovely French feel, stylishly decorated, and was nice and cool during our sunny stay.

Gabian is a lovely village, with all the basic shopping you need, and surrounded by wine domaines in every direction. The added attractions of historic Pezenas are only a ten minute drive away. A great place for a wonderful stay - we would definitely return !

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. So glad you enjoyed your stay at our house. Having a house that keeps cool during the hot summers is a real advantage. It sounds as if you loved the region and the village as much as we do! Glad you found the herbs!

Beautiful house in a quiet village

  • 5 of 5

We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay in Gabian. The village is small with a couple of bars - one mainly French the other mainly international, there is a bakers and a small grocery store within a few yards of the house. Parking was easy and there was only one day when we couldn't park near enough outside the house - so about 200 yards away.

The house is well appointed, as described and the pool was a delightful way to cool down - I even managed to practice my water volleyball skills! It was great to have a separate living room from the dining room (the later was the room e spent most of our time in when indoors) for a bit of peace and quiet from the others.

There are some mobile food vendors that come to the village of an evening - the pizza man was our favourite, and there are some interesting restaurants nearby - though one of you will have to drive.

Some lovely walks made the stay ideal. We also travelled further afield visiting Millau bridge which is superb and an interesting drive. There is a reservoir - details in the visitors book - fails nearby which made a great picnic spot.

All in all I'd thoroughly recommend staying here.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. We're currently staying at our house and the village is alive with frantic activity!! The wine growers are wanting to harvest the final grapes before the storm comes! There is a wonderful smell of wine in the air!

Wonderful French escape

  • 5 of 5

On entering this typically 'French' idyllic house we immediately felt all our stresses of life simply melt away. The spacious house manages a mix of grandeur and rustic charm in abundance; a cool haven from the heat. Plenty of equipment in the kitchen enabled us to dine 'al fresco' for every meal and the ample sized garden table allowed us to display our successful BBQ attempts. The secluded courtyard with fabulous pool, plants, and sun loungers, was an oasis of relaxation and the tree provided some welcome shade. We would have happily stayed in the courtyard all week 'chilling' but thought we had better do some sightseeing. Hi lights of our week were wine and food tasting in Pezenas on Friday night and their Saturday morning market. Pezenas is a charming town with cobbled streets in the older part; we ate there several times, plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. A 'pique nique' at Peyrat wine domaine was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, sampling wines and local produce whilst sat in a leafy courtyard...bliss! Trips to the coast at Marseillan and Coullioure were amazing....get there early to park!

During the booking process and throughout our holiday the owner has provided excellent customer service and we would not hesitate in recommending this house to our friends. We left with many wonderful memories of our French vacation.

Owner's Response: Thrilled to bits that you had such a good time. Thank you for your lovely review. I always enjoy communicating with our guests before their holidays as we just want everyone to enjoy their time at the house and exploring the area. So pleased the recommendations were highlights. There is so much to do but, like you, we also love to relax by the pool! Fen

Fabulous house in a beautiful area

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house and had a great week. It is clean, well equipped and we felt totally at home there. The courtyard is very pretty and is a perfect space to relax in and we cooked on the barbecue most nights. Gabian is worth walking around - there is a short walking tour around the ancient part of the village. Pezenas market on Saturday mornings is very good, as is the bread from Gabian's boulangerie. Gorges d'Heric is breathtaking and Roquebrun is great for canoeing and swimming. The owner provided a wealth of information and we felt we were valued guests.

Owner's Response: Thank you Hamish for your lovely review. The baker being just round the corner is indeed rather a bonus isn't it! The alimentation next door is also quite well stocked with the essentials! We're so glad you and your family had such a great time exploring the area and that you enjoyed the house and the barbecuing.

Excellent holiday property

  • 5 of 5

We had 2 weeks in this superb property. I think it's without doubt one of the best ones we've ever stayed in. The house is just so roomy. We were 7 people and we didn't once get under each others feet. Everything has been thought of, even down to a large drinks fridge as well as a large kitchen fridge. The bedrooms were large with plenty of cupboard and wardrobe space. There are two bathrooms with showers and a third toilet! Outside in the courtyard and pool area (which is to be fair where we spent most of our time) is very private and pretty. There were enough sunbeds, and in excellent repair, to cater for everyone (which in previous holidays at other properties we've not found to be the case!) The owners obviously spend time in the property themselves and this shows as the property felt like a second home - not a shut up and leave type place. There was lots of information left for us about the house and the surrounding area. We mostly ate in Pezenas which was around a 10 minute drive away - a lovely Medieval town with great restaurants, fab ice cream bars and a weekly Saturday market. We also BBQ'd a few times in the ample BBQ in the courtyard. There's not much in the quiet rural village of Gabian but that suited us. We found the boulangerie just around the corner for most mornings and sampled the pizza man in the van a couple times.. We would highly recommend this property for a great base to explore this wonderful wine growing region of France.

A gem of a place

  • 5 of 5

A lovely house in a small village. An absolute gem of a property with a swimming pool that is in a completely secluded courtyard. The house is generously equipped and feels more like a home than a holiday let. The nearby town of pezenas is a complete delight and we often visited for meals, sight seeing and shopping. A good centre for exploring the area, with beaches fairly close by. The owners have left a comprehensive pack detailing towns and areas of interest which we found most useful. Overall a lovely place to enjoy and relax in.

Yes, Pezenas is indeed a lovely town to explore and, being only 10 minutes away, makes it possible to visit regularly and enjoy all that it has to offer. It was lovely to read that you felt our house was more like a home than a holiday let. To us, that is the loveliest compliment. Thank you.

Facilities

From the Owner

Our house works very well for one or two families or groups of friends. Unlike many houses in the area where you have to climb a flight of stairs before you get to the main rooms, when you enter our front door you are in the spacious entrance hall with the lounge, dining room and kitchen right there. The spacious courtyard and pool make it easy to oversee children playing and swimming and the courtyard can also easily be shut off simply by locking doors opening onto it. The courtyard is also very private. The four bedrooms are all on the first floor opening onto a spacious landing. Again, it makes supervision of younger children very easy.
