About the property

House in Gabian, Nr. Pezenas, Herault, Languedoc, France - Village Location Close To Historic Market Towns, Vineyards, Rivers And Beautiful Sandy Beaches

Maison du Mûrier, our charming, spacious traditional French 'Maison de Village' is in a medieval, wine growing village at the edge of the Haut Languedoc National Park within easy reach of the coast, the Canal du Midi and the Herault and Orb valleys. We'd be really pleased to chat with you about our house or the area as written descriptions only go so far and you may have specific questions that we haven't addressed here. Do feel free to ring us.

Our house provides an excellent base for exploring this beautiful area of France with its medieval towns. Our three storey house has high ceilings and remains cool in the height of summer. The large, secluded courtyard with swimming pool enjoys a sunny aspect but there is also ample shade for those who prefer it. We have a wonderful mulberry tree which provides perfect shade and parasols which you can move around. In the evening candlelight & pool lighting makes it the perfect setting for ambient dining al fresco. There is a stone BBQ, table and seating for more than ten people and smaller tables dotted around the courtyard. Our village has a well stocked grocer shop, baker (rumour has it the current owner may be selling but we hope it will remain a not, the grocer shop next door also sells bread), post office, pharmacy, hairdresser, church, playground, bar/restaurant and local wine 'caves' which sell their own wines. There is an excellent, larger Super U (with petrol, chemist, post office & cash point) is just 5 minutes drive away in Roujan.

On the ground floor is the large hallway from which come the lounge and dining room. there is also a kitchen and loo with basin on the ground floor. You will enjoy the traditional French tiles in many of our rooms. The four bedrooms are on the first floor with one of the bathrooms which has a bath/shower, loo, wash basin and hairdryer. The bedrooms are spacious and all have plenty of storage. The second bathroom with shower, loo and wash basin is on the second floor. There are three loos altogether in the house. We have a 'barn' attached to the property with a washing machine and a second large fridge. Our guests find this invaluable in the summer for storing bottles and boxes of wine! Our house is very much our second home and we enjoy spending as much time there as we can. We hope you will enjoy your time in Gabian as much as we always do.

About Fenneke Fulleylove

Back in 2002 four of us did what many people might say we'd be mad to a house whilst on holiday and buy a house with friends! We just couldn't resist! We fell in love with the whole house! We love the sun, the outstanding beauty of the Haut National Park, the miles of long sandy beaches, the tranquil Canal du Midi, the local wines, the medieval list is endless.

We come over whenever we can. Retirement happily means two of us are no longer governed by school holidays! Bliss. We enjoy the different stunning wild flowers, the long, warm Summer evenings, the smell of wine that lingers in the air during the vendange in August and September.

We hope you will enjoy the area as much as we do.

Why Fenneke Fulleylove chose Gabian

What brought us to this area?

The list is endless but the proximity of the beautiful town of Pezenas was definitely a big attraction. It's full of history, cultural activities, art exhibitions, has the best market in the area, loads of restaurants and cafés and interesting little shops in narrow alleys. The landscape around the house was also a big draw. Our house, Maison du Mûrier, in Gabian is nestled amongst the vineyards with fabulous, varied walks where, on clear days, views can stretch to the coast. The house has character and the spacious enclosed sunny courtyard with the mulberry tree (Mûrier) was also something that we fell in love with on our first visit. We like the 'Frenchness' of the village! We like the fact that we can be in the sea within 35 is a choice of airports to fly into....

As I said list is endless.

What makes this house unique

Our house works very well for one or two families or groups of friends. Unlike many houses in the area where you have to climb a flight of stairs before you get to the main rooms, when you enter our front door you are in the spacious entrance hall with the lounge, dining room and kitchen right downstairs loo.

The spacious courtyard and pool make it easy to oversee children playing and swimming and the courtyard can also easily be shut off simply by locking doors opening onto it. The courtyard is also very private.

The four bedrooms are all on the first floor opening onto a spacious landing. Again, it makes supervision of younger children very easy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our group of 6 enjoyed a wonderful holiday in this lovely 19th century 'maison de village'. The house is well equipped with cool, spacious rooms and a sunny south-facing paved courtyard with a small pool and plenty of shade from a beautiful mulberry tree and parasols. A lovely spot for relaxing evenings. Bedding and towels are all provided but bring an extra for beach and swimming. The owners provided loads of information and maps to help us make the most of our too short stay!

Chris

This is a lovely airy house. Big rooms and well equipped. The large private courtyard garden and pool are perfect for lazy days and BBQ. Gabian is ideally situated to explore surrounding countryside.

Marieke

My third visit here & another fabulous holiday in a lovely house in a beautiful part of France. The sun, the evenings on the patio, Pezenas market on Saturday morning, swimming in the sea and at Barrages des Olivettes nearby and at the Pont de Diablo were all real high spots.

Thank you for a great place

  • 5 of 5

I would like to thank all those nice people who made sure that our stay was ideal. The house was wonderfully cool and the pool was blue, blue, blue. thank you for solving my dilema of renting your marvelous place just when we dispared from finding one for all of us at a reasonable price. We enjoyed seeing the tiny bottles and the old book that give a glimpse into the history of the house. We also loved the fact that we can walk to grocery shop, and the central location. thank you.

Wonderful traditional home

  • 5 of 5

Holiday Review.

Just returned from a week’s stay in the ancient village of Gabian in the Pezenas area of France.

This two hundred years old traditional French house provided our party of four with spacious and comfortable clean accommodation, with a wonderful atmosphere of typical French charm and ambiance.

The superb enclosed courtyard, with built-in barbecue, relaxing sunbeds and outside dining area was quiet and peaceful, the only increase in noise levels being a welcome dip in the lovely pool.

The bedrooms were large and comfortable, and the bathrooms and shower areas roomy and spacious. The delightful kitchen was fully equipped with all the conveniences required to make our stay relaxing and hassle free.

The heaps of useful information about the local area, and suggestions of things to do and places to visit was very helpful. There are so many pretty villages and towns in the surrounding area that a car is an essential.

All in all, a fabulous holiday in the beautiful wine growing Languedoc Roussillon region.

A hidden gem in Gabian

  • 5 of 5

This house is in the village of Gabian and can sleep 8 comfortably with 4 spacious double/twin rooms and two generous bathrooms. Ground floor has living room, dining room, kitchen, and a WC. But the key is the courtyard, with pool, bbq and outdoor living area. When at the house this is where you live. On arrival the house was clean and welcoming. Clear instructions were provided for everything so it was easy to function. It is an old house, which is its charm, but we experienced no issues at all that might be expected - everything was in perfect working order. If staying in Gabian you will need a car. The supermarket at Roujan has everything you need and is less than 10 minutes' drive. Gabian has one bar/restaurant which seemed to us to be the best of all the surrounding villages and better than most in the larger towns. There is no end to the attractions to be visited from a base in Gabian. Montpellier, Sete and Beziers are all less than an hour away, and beautiful Pezenas is only 20 minutes. We took an excellent boat ride for a few hours on the Canal du Midi from Colombiers. This property can be highly recommended.

Beautiful house in a quiet village

  • 5 of 5

We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay in Gabian. The village is small with a couple of bars - one mainly French the other mainly international, there is a bakers and a small grocery store within a few yards of the house. Parking was easy and there was only one day when we couldn't park near enough outside the house - so about 200 yards away.

The house is well appointed, as described and the pool was a delightful way to cool down - I even managed to practice my water volleyball skills! It was great to have a separate living room from the dining room (the later was the room e spent most of our time in when indoors) for a bit of peace and quiet from the others.

There are some mobile food vendors that come to the village of an evening - the pizza man was our favourite, and there are some interesting restaurants nearby - though one of you will have to drive.

Some lovely walks made the stay ideal. We also travelled further afield visiting Millau bridge which is superb and an interesting drive. There is a reservoir - details in the visitors book - fails nearby which made a great picnic spot.

All in all I'd thoroughly recommend staying here.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. We're currently staying at our house and the village is alive with frantic activity!! The wine growers are wanting to harvest the final grapes before the storm comes! There is a wonderful smell of wine in the air!

Wonderful French escape

  • 5 of 5

On entering this typically 'French' idyllic house we immediately felt all our stresses of life simply melt away. The spacious house manages a mix of grandeur and rustic charm in abundance; a cool haven from the heat. Plenty of equipment in the kitchen enabled us to dine 'al fresco' for every meal and the ample sized garden table allowed us to display our successful BBQ attempts. The secluded courtyard with fabulous pool, plants, and sun loungers, was an oasis of relaxation and the tree provided some welcome shade. We would have happily stayed in the courtyard all week 'chilling' but thought we had better do some sightseeing. Hi lights of our week were wine and food tasting in Pezenas on Friday night and their Saturday morning market. Pezenas is a charming town with cobbled streets in the older part; we ate there several times, plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. A 'pique nique' at Peyrat wine domaine was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon, sampling wines and local produce whilst sat in a leafy courtyard...bliss! Trips to the coast at Marseillan and Coullioure were amazing....get there early to park!

During the booking process and throughout our holiday the owner has provided excellent customer service and we would not hesitate in recommending this house to our friends. We left with many wonderful memories of our French vacation.

Fabulous house in a beautiful area

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house and had a great week. It is clean, well equipped and we felt totally at home there. The courtyard is very pretty and is a perfect space to relax in and we cooked on the barbecue most nights. Gabian is worth walking around - there is a short walking tour around the ancient part of the village. Pezenas market on Saturday mornings is very good, as is the bread from Gabian's boulangerie. Gorges d'Heric is breathtaking and Roquebrun is great for canoeing and swimming. The owner provided a wealth of information and we felt we were valued guests.

Owner's Response: Thank you Hamish for your lovely review. The baker being just round the corner is indeed rather a bonus isn't it! The alimentation next door is also quite well stocked with the essentials! We're so glad you and your family had such a great time exploring the area and that you enjoyed the house and the barbecuing.
