Character village property of exposed natural stone, dating from the 17th century, situated in a cul-de-sac on the edge of the village of Bugarach (pop.200), a few yards from one of the Cathar footpaths. The house has a large south-facing balcony, with an uninterrupted view of the famous Pech de Bugarach, the highest mountain in the Corbieres range. It has extensive grounds, including a small hill affording a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside, and a beautiful secluded courtyard shaded by trailing plants. This is an ideal base for outdoor activity since footpaths radiate in all directions from the village, offering a wealth of local and long-distance hikes. There is a swimming lake a few minutes walk from the house as well as opportunities for horse riding, rock climbing and caving. The Cathar castles of Peyrepertuse and Queribus, and the spectacular Gorges de Galamus are all within easy cycling distance. Rennes-les-Bains, famous for its thermal baths, is close by and can be reached via a beautiful forest path, as well as by road. This house offers you the perfect base for exploring an area of striking natural beauty, rich in human history.

Notes on accommodation: The accommodation is on 4 levels: Level 1 - access to the street, utility space and shower room (Bathroom 2) Level 2 - living room, kitchen, access to garden Level 3 - main bedrooms, balcony and bathroom Level 4 - attic bedrooms Wood-powered heating and central heating; plentiful supply of wood, provided free. Domestic hot water can be heated 3 ways, separately or in combination, via solar panel, back-boiler on kitchen stove, electric immersion heater. This is a quirky spacious house, full of character and original features, suitable for active people of any age. No smoking in house. Pets considered. Outside: Large garden on several levels, including small hill, at rear of property; bordered by stream. Secluded courtyard with garden furniture. Other seating and barbecue areas on land. Vegetable garden, washing line, fruit trees, wood shed. Flat areas for camping. The house is situated in a narrow cul-de-sac with ample space to load and unload but with limited parking places. Cars can be left in the village square a short distance away. Ode to Aude

We’ve had the holiday of a lifetime in this fabulous house in Bugarach. This is a large house with extensive grounds and yet it retained a cozy and intimate feeling. The house and grounds have the most amazing views of the Pic de Bugarach, The village is quiet and the locals are extremely friendly.

During our two weeks stay we clambered up mountains, hiked through forests and gorges, assailed castles, visited beautiful villages and churches, shopped until we dropped in local markets, swam with the fishes and the locals in the nearby lake and canoed the river Aude

Although we did lots of activities during our stay, this was also the most relaxed holiday we have ever had. We went with two older kids (10 and 11 years old). They loved fishing in the brook next to the house as well as playing in the enormous garden and roaming around the village. Although the owners do warn that some stairs in the house aren’t suitable for very young children, these stairs are right at the top of the house and in most of the sleeping areas this wasn’t a problem. Our kids had no problem at all with the top floor.

The kitchen is a lovely and natural gathering place to hang out. It is as well equipped as the description says and the Aga cooker was lovely. The kitchen is a great place to chill, chat and play games. On cooler evenings we drifted to the comfy lounge next to the wood-burning stove to play charades. We thoroughly recommend having a barbeque in the garden with the mountain as backdrop and seeing the Milky Way dazzle as it gets pitch dark.

We realize that we have found something special in this house and location and we hope others enjoy it as much as we did.
