About Moirag Clarke

Seaspray is owned by Mike and Moirag. Mike was brought up in Appledore and moved away for work, we currently live in Northamptonshire but return to the village as much as possible. When at home our constant thought is, “We’d rather be in Appledore”. Our daughters were brought up with regular visits to Appledore, and now grown up, love the place as much as we do. We look forward to sharing our home with you and hope that you grow to love the area as much as we do.

Why Moirag Clarke chose North Devon

Location, at the end of Irsha Street, (the street to be in, in Appledore) a short stroll to pubs, the quay in fact all Appledore has to offer.

The house is in our opinion beautiful and welcoming, we have decorated it for our comfort and hope you will also find it to your taste and standards.

We love our walks over to Westward Ho, our ferry trips over to Instow, but also feel very at home just pottering around Appledore. For us, our holiday home is total relaxation and a place to spend time with friends.

The sunsets are amazing, and take place just outside the front door, what more could you one want?

What makes this house unique

Our home is spacious yet cosy, with a bit of an unexpected WOW factor, as expressed frequently in our visitors book.

We love our log burner and to just sit on a cold day looking out at the river - we can almost feel the envy of other people out in the street who want the views but have to brave the elements to see them.

On warmer days, Mike is either swimming in the river, (so handy to be so close to be able to come home and change), or fishing, I pop out occasionally with a cup of tea and encouragement!

In the evening a short stroll to one of the local pubs to eat, (as yet Mike hasn't caught supper), although our spacious kitchen is well equipped and we frequently invite friends for dinner parties and long weekends where eating is very much on the agenda.

Notes on accommodation: There is a parking space at the back of the house for a small car, free on street parking is available next to the house, and car parks with weekly parking permits are situated nearby. We are located on the Coastal path, open the front door and turn either left or right and you have arrived! Flat walk to village centre. Outside: The house is named Seaspray for a reason, it is that close! So no garden is required, however to sit and watch activity on the river a public garden with seating is just outside the front door. At low tide the rocks alongside the life boat slip make a wonderful seating area and this place is a great sun trap. The most amazing sunsets occur from just outside the house, our hall window captures it all, although go outside for a real wow, people come to this part of Appledore just to view the sunset and take photo's, they really are that amazing. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Our housekeeper will have the house spotless for your arrival, guests are asked to keep the house clean and tidy with the expectation they will leave the cottage as they would wish to find it. Bed linen is provided along with bath sheets and hand towels. Other: Parking is available at the rear of the property for a small car alternatively there is free on street parking or a nearby car park where weekly parking permits are available

Beautiful house in a beautiful location

We had a wonderful time at Seaspray. The house was warm, comfortable and welcoming. The beds were amazingly comfortable and all the rooms really spacious. Our three children al slept upstairs altogether and loved that. they also loved the jacuzzi bath! The house had everything we needed and was really well equipped. The location is amazing being so close to the water and only a short walk to town. The view from the window on the stairs is just breathtaking and we watched the sunset every night. We were well placed to visit so many spots across the area and pick up the coastal path. We even watched a lifeboat go out. I would wholeheartedly recommend the house for both families or adults without children. I can't speak highly enough of our stay and we will definitely come back.

Fantastic location, fantastic comfortable and spacious property

Had a wonderful time. The location, views from the large windows all amazing. Woodturner in the sitting room keeps you snug and warm (in addition to the central heating which is very good). Lovely spacious and comfortable property, well equipped, clean, tidy and homely. Thank you. Will definitely visit again.

Perfect Stay!

Our stay - 5 Adults - was a surprise weekend break for my husband's birthday and what a wonderful weekend it was!

Sea Spray was perfect for our needs. We loved the position of the house.......the views......wow, were amazing and the sunsets, captured from every window, especially the beautiful Window on the stairs.

Very well equipped, can't recommend highly enough.

Really lovely house with stunning views

We had a great 3 night stay in this lovely house. It is very well set up with everything you need. The rooms are clean and beautifully done and the views out of the windows are stunning. Moirag was very helpful and accommodating. We loved Appledore and there is such a lot to do around and about. This is somewhere we will definitely re visit.

Superb in every way

Great property to rent. Beautiful views and all furnished to a high standard.

The whole property is light and makes you feel at home.

Great sized living space and location is quiet but central.

I have rented most properties this size in Appledore and this is by far the best.

Moraig is great to deal with and has thought of almost everything for the house.

Location

Car: recommended

Coast/Beach:

Appledore has a quay, at high tide profuse crabbing activity takes place. This is not to be missed, watch and enjoy, or even participate, its all great fun. Westward Ho! is a walk away at low tide or 10 minutes drive at other times. This beach is a blue flag 9 mile stretch of golden sand. Instow, across the river also has a sandy beach. A stones throw from the house is the Lifeboat station, at low tide the slipway is surrounded by rock pools, great exploration ground for children of all ages.

Travel:

Just under an hours drive from junction 27 of the M5. Nearest town is Bideford a ten minute drive away and the larger town of Barnstaple is about twenty minutes away. Exeter is the nearest airport. Trains run to Barnstaple, from Exeter St David. From Barnstaple there are local buses to Bideford and Appledore. National Express runs coaches to Bideford, with local buses taking you onto Appledore. Local taxis are also available for airport pick ups and private charters.

Distances:

Appledore has a deli, post office and small supermarket, plus craft and gift shops. Larger supermarkets are situated in Bideford. There are plenty of places to eat out in Appledore, from pubs to coffee shops, plus two take away fish and chip shops, and a Hockings ice cream van, ice cream made in Appledore since 1936 and not to be missed.

Further Details:

There is so much to do and see, making Appledore the ideal holiday location. Appledore is an old fishing village not far from Bideford and Barnstaple with quaint streets and higgledy-piggledy cottages

The Tarka Trail has miles of cycling along an old railway line, this is a favourite activity of ours, bike hire is available in nearby Bideford. Sea fishing is a popular pastime, either from the beaches or by booking on organised fishing trips. Appledore itself has an interesting Maritime Museum.

Trips on the Oldenburg to Lundy Island are available from Bideford. The area is popular for bird watchers, A plentiful supply of Oyster Catchers can be viewed from the house.

The RHS garden at Rosemoor is about twenty five minutes drive away. And further along the coast is the timeless village of Clovelly, where the steep, cobbled street tumble down past gleaming white cottages to the tiny, deep-blue harbour.

The all-weather attractions of “The Milky Way” and “The Big Sheep” are on the way to Clovelly. Whilst we haven’t experienced these personally our young nieces assure us the Big Sheep is great fun. Plus don’t miss out on the Gnome reserve near Bradworthy. Gnome hats are loaned free of charge together with fishing rods, so you don't embarrass the gnomes!

On your drive to the house you may pass Skern Lodge, a popular outdoor activity centre, over years our girls have spent many a day here, learning to canoe, surf, or row. Sailing is also available at the North Devon Yacht Club in Instow.

Certainly not to be missed is a Hockings ice-cream, made in Appledore, the taste is truly delicious. Eating fish and chips on the quay is another popular pastime. Appledore has an abundance of places to eat from tea rooms, to pubs and restaurants. It is also possible to buy fresh fish from the Quay. Instow across the water is also a great place to visit, with lovely places to eat, pass it on the Tarka Trail, arrive by ferry from Appledore at high tide, or simply drive there by car.

Please check availability by phone. A deposit of 25% (plus £100 security deposit which is refundable) is required to secure the booking. The balance is required 28 days prior to the commencement of the let. The refundable deposit will be held to cover breakages and is returned after a satisfactory post rental inspection. The deposit is returnable if a cancellation happens more than 6 weeks before the letting date.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is Saturday, the house is available from 3pm and guests must have vacated the property by 10.30am. Short breaks of weekends/part weeks and Friday change overs are available by arrangement during off peak times of the year.
