About liz Balharry

I work locally as an ecologist and have worked in the past on educational projects for organisations like Scottish Natural Heritage. Although my family and I have lived here for 25 years, we have still much to learn about the this amazing place. Having the Glen Affric Nature Reserve on the doorstep, close access to the high tops and miles and miles of forestry tracks and trails for running on, biking and general exploring, are key reasons why we enjoy living here. We also love the peace and quiet and gentle pace of life in this very rural area.

liz Balharry purchased this house in 1980

Why liz Balharry chose Scottish Highlands & Islands

About twenty five years ago we came to Glen Affric to work. We loved it here and were offered a little cottage, the croft house, to rent. The owners kindly offered to sell us the house and although we had to move to Perth, we were allowed to holiday-let it in the summer to cover our purchase payments. Several years later we returned to the cottage to live permanently and to raise a family, as it is a perfect place for this. We built a timber framed, eco friendly addition onto the house, which took many years, as self-builds do, but gained many skills in the process and the kids enjoyed all the sawdust and mess. With children now adults, we are building another house on a site near Cannich, and renting out the Croft to people who want to get to know this beautiful area.

What makes this house unique

What i enjoy about living here is: the peace and quiet, no background noise of traffic, just bird song and the river; the clean air - all the trees and stones are thick with lichens. The space - you walk out the door and you can go for miles and miles in any direction, paths, forest tracks, quiet single track roads. There are rivers to picnic by, waterfalls, and lochs and pools to swim in. There are route guides at the house, to help you explore the area, by bike, car and on foot (by canoe and on horseback too - if you like!) and there are identification guides for plants and animals too. I love watching barn owls fly past the window on dusk, finding slow worms in the compost heap and hearing the stags roaring in the Autumn. The starry night skies are the icing on the cake!

An amazing house in a beautiful location, just perfect !

  • 5 of 5

Croft cottage was just perfect, fully equipped with everything you could need for a enjoyable holiday. There were four adults and 2 dogs, plenty of room for us all, the garden was huge and due to its location there was plenty of wildlife on your doorstep, Swallows nesting and a hare in the garden one evening, there was a lovely walk from the cottage to Plodda falls, that's a must do, also some great woodland walks. We must mention the Tomich hotel which is in walking distance of the cottage, they did the most amazing food and their hospitality was second to none ! we will most definately be returning to the Croft in the near future.

A lovely spacious and well equipped property in picturesque surroundings. Beautiful.

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much to Liz for allowing us to stay in your gorgeous property. It had everything we needed for our 4 night stay. It is a little piece of heaven in the Highlands and I will be back with my family and hopefully stay longer next time . The Croft is spacious and interesting with lots of books, games and dvds for when the weather keeps you inside or you just fancy a chilled relaxing day. Plodda Falls is a short drive/longer walk from The Croft and well worth a visit.. The garden is beautiful and tgere is an undercover area to play table tennis if you wish. It was lovely to see all the different wild birds around The Croft and listening to their singing in the mornings. If you are looking for a very peaceful break, away from it all then The Croft is just the ticket.

A Home in the Highlands

  • 5 of 5

The Croft is an excellent base for a holiday in the Highlands. It is spacious comfortable and well equipped. The surrounding landscape is spectacular and it is possible to go for interesting walks straight from the house, as well as many further afield. The Croft is very much a home and Liz the owner is very welcoming. I would certainly recommend a holiday in The Croft.

Home from home (in spite of cliché)

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful spacious home with individual quirks and pieces, cosy and enjoyable, the complete opposite to a sterile holiday home, in a big parklike surrounding ensuring that you will listen to varied birdsong in the morning and evening. Apart from this lyrical waxing we cannot add anything substantial to all the positive reviews before.

If you want to explore the Glen Affric area, this is the place to stay. And if the weather is not so good (as sometimes happens in the Highlands) you will most probably be very comfortable inside as everything you could wish for is available (books, TV, music, table tennis, comfy settees, and so on). The only thing missing is a "boy's room" with a snooker table, but you cannot get everything you want, can you?

The Croft.....a fantastic home in an amazing location!

  • 5 of 5

I loved our holiday in Scotland!!! We went on lots of walks through the local mountains and lochs. The house was really funny with the grass on the roof! (Oscar age 8)👍🏻

We had a secret curtain covering a door that goes outside to a Ping-pong table. (Katie age 6)

a home you dont want to leave

  • 5 of 5

What an amazing and lovely place! We could have easily stayed another month or so! The house is very well equipped and built with love. Lighting the stove in the evenings gives a cuddly feeling of home in the beautiful livingroom area. Plenty of space allowes not to sit on each others lap even if you are moren than two people. The water tank is heated in the morning and evening and gives therefore sufficient warm water when needed.

Good tours around the property, Plodda Falls, Glen Affric National Park, towns around Loch Ness, Inverness in a little less than an hour.

I definitely want to return!
