About liz Balharry

I work locally as an ecologist and have worked in the past on educational projects for organisations like Scottish Natural Heritage. Although my family and I have lived here for 25 years, we have still much to learn about the this amazing place. Having the Glen Affric Nature Reserve on the doorstep, close access to the high tops and miles and miles of forestry tracks and trails for running on, biking and general exploring, are key reasons why we enjoy living here. We also love the peace and quiet and gentle pace of life in this very rural area.

liz Balharry purchased this house in 1980

Why liz Balharry chose Tomich

About twenty five years ago we came to Glen Affric to work. We loved it here and were offered a little cottage, the croft house, to rent. The owners kindly offered to sell us the house and although we had to move to Perth, we were allowed to holiday-let it in the summer to cover our purchase payments. Several years later we returned to the cottage to live permanently and to raise a family, as it is a perfect place for this. We built a timber framed, eco friendly addition onto the house, which took many years, as self-builds do, but gained many skills in the process and the kids enjoyed all the sawdust and mess. With children now adults, we are building another house on a site near Cannich, and renting out the Croft to people who want to get to know this beautiful area.

What makes this house unique

What i enjoy about living here is: the peace and quiet, no background noise of traffic, just bird song and the river; the clean air - all the trees and stones are thick with lichens. The space - you walk out the door and you can go for miles and miles in any direction, paths, forest tracks, quiet single track roads. There are rivers to picnic by, waterfalls, and lochs and pools to swim in. There are route guides at the house, to help you explore the area, by bike, car and on foot (by canoe and on horseback too - if you like!) and there are identification guides for plants and animals too. I love watching barn owls fly past the window on dusk, finding slow worms in the compost heap and hearing the stags roaring in the Autumn. The starry night skies are the icing on the cake!

May 2018 holiday with friends

  • 5 of 5

This very comfortable house is set in peaceful gardens and woods. It has many beautiful pieces of wood and art work, and lots of light from a large number of windows, bringing the surroundings inside. If you are thoughtful about our world and environment this house will please you. The Glen Affric valley is very beautiful with ancient forest rich in bird life. Good opportunities for cycling up the valleys on small roads. Nice mountains to climb nearby. You can walk from the house to the local hotel for nice meals. Liz was very helpful.

Beautiful cottage, beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

Liz was incredibly helpful in the lead up to staying. When we arrived at the cottage we were in complete joy of how great the croft is, the photos do not do this cottage justice. The place is large and locate in such a beautiful part of Scotland. Great location for exploring the Highlands and Skye. We took a few walks from the cottage and over the glen in Affric. Beautiful. Highlights of the cottage was the surroundings, the large rooms, the fireplace and the cosiness. One of the best cottages I have stayed in.

A gem of a place nestled in beautiful countryside

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful property in a beautiful setting with everything that you need for a great holiday. Plodda Falls and Glen Affric are nearby and the Spar shop at Cannich has all your essential and more. The Lodge is simply stunning and provided the peace, tranquillity and fresh air that we love. I have booked this accommodation previously and have another holiday planned for September here. The only setback to providing such a glowing account of Liz Balharrys The Lodge, is that other people will want to go and I want it all for myself!!! Seriously though - it's a gem of a place and Liz has thought of everything. We all loved it.

Amazing week at The Croft

  • 5 of 5

This is our 2nd stay at The croft and like the 1st visit it was absolute bliss. On arrival the house was lovely and warm with a log fire blazing and the house was spotlessly clean. Liz is very thoughtful in how the Croft is presented, all the wood and stone make it feel natural. We listened to the owls every night which at first was a puzzle as we weren't aware what the noise was. I would like to refer to the review that only gave 1 star and was quite scathing. The conclusion that we came to was that those people would be more suited to Butlins. In our opinion and the opinion of everybody else that have left a review, 5 stars is not enough, 10 would be more appropriate. We most definitely will be going back to the croft. Thank you Liz for an amazing week.

***** WORST COTTAGE EVER *****

  • 1 of 5

We arrived on Friday 6th October for a week's break with our dogs. After a 10 hour car journey - we were met by Liz - who was supposed to be cleaning The Croft. The pictures that are advertised on here ARE NOTHING LIKE IT. I have never stayed in such a dirty cottage in my life. We lasted last than 48 hours - I sourced another cottage via a different company and we left the Croft on Sunday 8th October. I am taking this further with HomeAway and a full refund is being requested. I have evidence of the state of the cottage. The garden IS NOT dog friendly - the 7 acres of land is actually the hill/mountain behind you, which you cannot get up. The whole property had fumes from the oil burner which gives you a headache every day. I could go on and on - but I won't as there would not be enough space to type it all in. All the advertising of this property is totally incorrect and misleading. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROPERTY AT ALL

Owner's Response: This review and the comments left in the visitor book were a huge shock to me. All the more surprising because these guests arrived over 2.5 hours early and were in the house making themselves at home while I worked in the garden for well over an hour. They told me they loved the house and smiled and waved goodbye when I left. If they did leave after 2 days they didn't inform me at the time or make any attempt to contact me. I returned a week later to find the house left unlocked and uncleaned or tidied by them. Although they have said they will write to Owners Direct they haven't yet done so. Two of their party cancelled on medical grounds just prior to their arrival - I can only think that the note and the threat of a bad review were a way of trying to get me to agree to give them a discount or return their money, They have certainly threatened me with 'further action' of various sorts which fits with the fact they have neither followed through with a written complaint to Owners Direct and that they left posting their review for 8 days after their stated departure. Please read the other reviews and make a balanced judgement on where the truth lies. Needless almost to say, the house was cleaned as carefully and to the high standard I always clean it. I had also told them prior to booking that the gardens were unfenced and wouldn't keep a dog in and that neighbouring dogs equally might wander up. When they arrived they informed me that one of their dogs was an ex ratter, a rescue, and couldn't be trusted with other dogs, they advised me to put my dog in my car, before they let theirs out. I really don't understand quite what led these visitors to behave the way they did. However, they are the only upsetting and bad experience I have ever had letting, I won't be bullied or blackmailed so their review is up for you to make your own judgement on. Many many thank yous to all the genuine, lovely people who have previously booked, left the house so clean and tidy and given thoughtful and real reviews
