About Simon Draycott

My name's Simon. I'm 50 and a Counselling Psychologist who works in London.

I have a passion for all things Spanish and was lucky enough to have been able to take a year out to live in Valencia in 2000 to learn the language. I've been going back ever since.

Simon Draycott purchased this apartment in 2008

Why Simon Draycott chose Russafa

I spent a year in Valencia to learn Spanish in 2000 and loved it. I particularly like this location (Ruzafa) as it has a real sense of history and community. Many of the buildings date back to the early part of the 20th Century.

Other reasons for buying in Russafa are the fact that it has a wonderful food market, you can walk to the city centre in a few minutes, and the selection of bars and restaurants really is fantastic.

In recent years a lot of artists and photographers have moved into the area which has added yet more vibrancy to the area.

What makes this apartment unique

The apartment block was built in 1914 and retains original features such as the wooden window shutters.

It was refurbished a few years ago to provide a modern, open living space without losing its original charm.

The apartment has a wonderful view of a local church, enjoys a lot of natural light and is well-situated for shops, markets, bars and restaurants. Everything is within walking distance, including the city centre. The beach is a cycle ride or short bus/cab ride away.

Good location.

Clean. Near everything. Well equipped. We were there on a holiday weekend, so the nights were long and lively. Quiet during the day. Stairs to apartment on second floor(which is first floor in Europe).

Valencia is just amazing, with so much to do. This property is plonk in the middle of all the action in terms of restaurants and great bars but very much local. Despite being in the heart of everything, its really peaceful at night. Above a bakery and minutes from the market, self catering is no problem. And it had a really well equipped kitchen. Although you really don't need to with all the restaurants on your door step. Its really easy to walk around the city from here and the apartment has so much info & maps. Its about a 20 min slow walk to the Plaza del Reina where the bus tours all go from. I would recommend taking the Valencia Tours trip out to El Palmer. Such good value. The Science & Arts City is epic.. If you have kids I wouldn't do it all in a day. Split as there is a lot to take in. As a foodie, I would not leave Valencia without going to El Papagayo Del Carmen on Calle Quart (sublime food), Goya Gallery does stunning Paella and everything else. Palao Bistrot a short stroll form the apartment is excellent. La Teresina around the corner from the apartment serves lovely food in a great atmosphere. But there are loads of cards in the apartment. However they are so busy I would recommend checking some out via FB and trip advisor as the choice is overwhelming. There is no lift in the apartment, but thats OK to burn off the cake, tapas and Paella!!. Monica is so sweet, when you arrive and kindly arranged our taxi back to the airport. Simon was so helpful with any queries we had. I would say get the price from the taxi if your doing that from the airport as I was charged 36 going to and only E16 going back! Loads of transport options throughout the city... we walked but there are loads of people on bikes etc. Russafa is such a cool spot, we felt so safe at night walking around and the atmosphere was great. The location of this apartment couldn't have been any better for a relaxing girls break (fab clothes shops across the road & a market on Mondays at the door..shoe heaven!). Def going back here before the year is out. Great beds, proper high power shower, stylish decor, home away from home feel, well equipped kitchen and good book selection... Whats there not to like??.

Lovely apartment and responsive owner.

The apartment was on the second floor but the person who checked us in helped with our bags. You would have to be very, very lucky to find parking on the street. But There is parking in an underground garage close by for 20 euro per night.

Great apartment, brilliant location, fabulous city.

  • 5 of 5

Having stayed in Russafa three times for the MotoGp we think that this apartment has the best location. Close enough to the railway station and city centre whilst not being too noisy (plus only 1 minute from El Camerino). The apartment has everything you could need, and the previous occupants even left a dozen cans of beer in the fridge. Go to Valencia it's a brilliant city, stay in Russafa it's a fabulous area, book Simon's apartment it's great, and escape the British weather. Highly recommended.
