About the property

Cottage in Winfrith Newburgh, Nr. Dorchester, Dorset, England - Close to Dramatic Dorset Cliffs & Beaches; Adventure, Fun & Historic Days Out for All Ages

A traditional thatched Dorset longhouse, Old Dairy Cottage is on the edge of a friendly village with a well-stocked shop & post office.

Historic castles, excellent walking (coast & cliff, woodland, heath, fields, Lulworth Castle), plenty of family attractions (Monkey World, Bovington Tank Museum, Thomas Hardy's house, Lawrence of Arabia's house, Iron Age Maiden Castle, Weymouth beach & marina) & good places to eat nearby.

The cottage is next to a working dairy (children enjoy visiting the cows) & is 5 mins walk from the village shop. The cottage used to be the dairyman's home and has very thick walls and low ceilings.

Relax in the garden (with pond) or by the log fire or take off and explore the beautiful countryside and historic sites.

There are plenty of pubs and good places to eat.

The farmhouse kitchen is well equipped & often the place where everyone comes together round the table for breakfast or an evening meal.

There are plenty of maps and guidebooks in the library and toys under the stairs for younger visitors.

There are three freeview TVs and wifi.

About Catriona Robertson

The Old Dairy Cottage has been in the family for over 20 years.

Whether it's stretching out to gaze at the stars on a clear night, putting a picnic together to take down the cliffs to Durdle Door, chatting round the kitchen table or by the log fire after a day's exploring - we love this part of the world.

There are plenty of maps, books and guides to browse in the cottage and the village shop is a good place to find out what's on locally.

We hope you'll enjoy your stay.

The cottage used to be the dairyman's home and the dairy next door is still working, selling its milk to Marks & Spencer. Visits to see the cows are possible, please ask the dairyman. Up to two dogs (at an extra charge of £20 per week each) are welcome so long as they remain downstairs and not exercised in the garden. They can be taken for a walk up the lane, which they love. As with all traditional cottages, tall (6ft plus) people will have to mind their heads as they go through the doorways. The ceilings are low upstairs. Smoking is not permitted in any part of the cottage. The private walled garden catches has fruit trees, roses, geraniums, buddleia, philadelphus, lawn, terrace (with table & chairs), garden bench and pond. The pond is covered with wooden lattice and filled with plants, but young children should be *supervised at all times*. Summer visitors are encouraged to eat the fruit & to cut flowers for arranging. Winfrith Newburgh has no street lighting, making it an ideal place to stargaze at night. The utility nook in the room next to the kitchen stores a high chair, iron and ironing board, flower vases, vacuum cleaner and cleaning equipment. Fresh bed linen & towels are included. Please clean before you go, leaving it as you found it. Logs are kept outside the back door. A washing line can be extended across the kitchen garden.

Lovely house very well equipped

  • 4 of 5

The house was lovely and very well equipped. Some of the doorways are very low, but it does say this clearly in the description. The only downside of this property we found was related to the farm next door. The weather was superb when we were there, the large bedroom has a velux window which we needed open for air. The cows mooing was fine but they are milking all night which at times was noisy, radio playing, shouting at the cows etc. Would perhaps benefit from a fan for warmer weather, as when the window was closed you can't hear it. The garden was lovely a real sun trap however it had a lot of plants which although beautiful did not leave a great deal of space. We did have a lovely time and there was nothing the cottage didn't have in the way of equipment. Great place to stay would highly recommend.

Beautiful traditional thatched cottage with fabulous cottage garden

  • 4 of 5

Lovely cottage with roses round the door and beautiful cottage garden with flowers that smell divine. The facilities were good with everything we needed in the big kitchen. There was plenty of hot water for five of us to shower before a wedding that we were attending on the Saturday. We would have appreciated instructions on how to work the timer for the heating as it got quite cold in the evenings, but we eventually figured it out. The beds were comfy and the pillows were the best I have ever slept on. My only real gripe was the settee and chairs in the sitting room which had no stuffing whatsoever in them and were really uncomfortable.

We are all used to farmhouse smells so were not worried by the smell on some days coming from our four legged neighbours, especially as the perfume from the roses masked it once you were in the garden. However, guests who do not come from a rural background may find this offputting.

Lovely well-equipped cottage in beautiful area

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is in a very pretty village, with nice walks from the doorstep - it is full of character and comfortable and perfect for our family group from young to old. When the sun shone the garden was lovely and tranquil (we didn't spot the pond for days, the reeds and bushes were so fulsome!) Nearby is Dorset's natural coastline, and not much further a wonderful choice of places to visit. We had a Thomas Hardy focus this time - with a few beaches thrown in for good measure. Helpful communications from the owners, many thanks!

Owner's Response: We're so glad you enjoyed your stay! The cottage has been in the family for over 20 years and we've had many inter-generational holidays there. We'll be down ourselves next week and will probably follow in your footsteps - down to the beaches and also visiting Hardy country, including Egdon Heath from The Return of the Native. If the weather holds, we'll also be eating out in the garden. Many thanks for being in touch and all the very best - Catriona
