Methven House is a sympathetic renovation of the 'old' grocers shop in Elie. It is a successful blend of the original Victorian charm with some cutting edge contemporary styling. 130 yards from the front door to the beach and about the same to the golf course at the rear. Huge south facing sitting room (26' long), with another 'snug' sitting room both with TV's and wood-burning stoves. The 'snug' room is open-planned with the new dining kitchen which leads directly onto a sun-trap and sheltered, enclosed garden. The garden gate leads down a path to private off street parking for 2 cars and on to the golf course. The kitchen is large and sunny, well-equipped with ovens, microwave, large fridge, freezer, washer/dryer, gas hob, dishwasher, ipod player etc. At the rear of the property on this side is a twin room overlooking the garden and a shower room. This downstairs bedroom is ideal for limited mobility people. A wheelchair can fit in the shower room but it is not a 'wet' room and does have a shower tray. A king-size double room with en suite bathroom is at the top of the stairs leading up from the utility kitchen. At the top of the stairs from the reception hall is a master super king-size double room with en suite bathroom with underfloor heating. There are 3 front facing bedrooms as well - a twin, a single and a triple (with adult-sized bunks). There is a family bathroom with bath and separate shower. There are high chairs, cot, children's books, dolls house and a dressing up box. Games and jigsaws for all ages. A DVD player in each sitting room, along with Ipod compatible music systems and free WiFi should keep everyone happy! It has a telephone (honesty box system to pay for calls). Elie, a wonderful holiday destination for all ages, provides a wealth of attractions. Everything from a gently shelving blue flag beach, water sports centre, golf courses and putting green, tennis courts, Fife Coastal Path walks, shops, cafes, cosy pubs, fine dining, historic sites and bird watching are all available within walking distance of this holiday home! If you still need more, try one of over 30 golf courses within a 15 mile radius, visit the ancient university town of St Andrews (12 miles away) or the Secret Bunker to explore the 24,000 square feet of nuclear proof accommodation built 100 feet underground. There are castles and palaces to discover and the chance to browse the picturesque fishing villages of the East Neuk of Fife. The area is rich in art and antique shops and has a lively arts scene including the annual Pittenweem Arts Festival which attracts many local artists and visitors from far afield. Fife has lots of excellent restaurants. In Elie itself Sangsters, The Ship Inn and The 19th Hole (latter is staggering distance from back gate!) are all recommended for a meal out. Within 10 miles there is a wealth of delicious places to eat but to single out a few: Michelin-starred Peat Inn, The Cellar in Anstruther, The Inn at Lathones, The Golf Hotel in Crail. A couple of miles further and there are many more in St Andrews - one being The Road Hole Restaurant at the Old Course, or try Ostlers Close in Cupar. If you want to eat in, try the Ardross Farm Shop just outside Elie for locally sourced delicious food and ready made meals. Check out the coffee and hot chocolate at The Cocoa Tree Shop in Pittenweem. During the summer months there are many Fife gardens open to the public under the Gardens of Scotland scheme - but if you are visiting at other times of the year then the Cambo gardens are open year round and The Botanic Garden in St Andrews also runs workshops and lectures. For keen bird-watchers (like the owner), Methven's location has much to offer. White-tailed Sea Eagles, with their 8-foot wing span, were first re-introduced to Fife in 2007 and are regularly spotted in the surrounding countryside. The nearby Isle of May has 40,000 occupied Puffin burrows, and offers the chance to see many rare species during the Spring and Autumn migration. Visit equestrian centres or try out quad biking. Have a go at clay pigeon shooting or take a boat trip to the Isle of May. Enjoy a spot of sea fishing...... or just stay and relax in your comfortable holiday home!
I am a wife and mother of 3 children. We love Elie as it is a small friendly place where the children can roam safely as soon as they can cross a road. They love the independence it offers and will walk quite long distances to get to the sweetie shop and collect your newspaper with 20p in their pocket. Teenagers also have a fabulous time in high season. The Pav, tennis, golf, watersports centre and bonfires on the beach are all entertainment. We love to cook and the kitchen is well equipped. The house is large enough to find a quiet spot away from the melee and the garden is a real private suntrap.
We love walking in the winter and coming back to a wood fire. We like to get outdoors in any weather and take our kayaks to the beach if it is a calm day. Can kayak round the coast.
LOUISA NELSON purchased this house in 2009
We bought the house because we love Elie. We wanted a house large enough to have friends and family to stay as our children love to holiday with cousins - the more the better and they have 30 to choose from! We wanted to have a house with 2 ensuites to ensure 2 families could holiday together and both have privacy. I also wanted a downstairs bathroom and bedroom for the elderly or infirm. Elie has a feel of 'Swallows and Amazons' and encourages all ages to get outside and enjoy themselves. There are lots of other like-minded families to meet if you feel so inclined. Really friendly place - summer holidays your children will want to repeat annually and remind you of your summer holidays long ago....
Over the years I have enjoyed the freedom my children have experienced whilst staying in Elie. Any aged children will head off with or without you. I always knew they would be safe, the beach is very gently shelving and the traffic are aware that it is a holiday venue with lots of wobbly children cycling with golf clubs on their backs the wrong way down the road. The house is well situated between the golf course and the beach. When we renovated the house I designed it with 2 of almost everything - showers/baths/cookers/boilers/washing machines/dishwashers/microwaves/dvd/tv so that a breakdown would not adversely affect one's holiday. It gives one great peace of mind that you are not going to be left with a pile of dirty dishes due to bad luck.
I just wanted to say thank you so much for a really amazing house! We had a fantastic time and couldn't believe how well Methven House accommodated us all so comfortably - the kids had a great time with all the indoor and outdoor space and all the girls are now going to pester their husbands for a very long time to get a kitchen like yours - it is fantastic!! We sat around the table both nights till the early hours and it was really great to be all together in such a lovely room which really has everything and more than even my own kitchen has! Just to say that we had a wonderful stay at Methven House - it was just perfect. We really appreciated being able to come in early and leave late, it made our weekend very relaxing. As well as being extremely comfortable and very nicely decorated, we particularly appreciated how incredibly spacious it is - we had four generations ranging from 6 months to 95, and 15 people (inc 2 babies) and still had plenty of room. As an extended family group of 11 adults ranging in age from 19 through to 83 years we enjoyed a wonderful holiday in Methven House. We have stayed in many large properties but were unanimous in declaring this our best holiday let yet. This house is exceptionally spacious, comfortable and we found it absolutely fascinating to be staying in an old family grocer's shop, which, as the property description states, has been sympathetically renovated. It has a real charming quality and offers something a little bit different for people like us who enjoy wondering 'what this bit used to be' etc. Every single bed was very good quality and comfortable, bedding is lovely crisp cotton, towels are fluffy and the kitchen diner is practically perfect. Add the fact that the beach and golf course are practically on the doorstep, what more do you want? We travelled from Yorkshire to Fife and absolutely loved it. There was so much to do in such beautiful surroundings with lovely, friendly local people. We feel that the photographs of Methven House don't do it justice. It is huge! Many thanks to Louisa who was very friendly, helpful, accommodating and made the booking process very simple. We can't wait to return to Elie. What a little gem of a town and what a gem of a property.
Rented the cottage for 4 nights and found the property and location to be ideal. The cottage was spacious, well equipped and comfortable. Access to the beach was excellent. I thoroughly recommend this property.
Methven House is just brilliant - it's very well equipped and brilliantly located. It's a hop, skip and jump to the pub, golf course, tennis and beach. There's loads of room in the house - perfect for two families or a large group. A major plus is lots of hot water, brilliant after a fun day out or a day at the beach. Really can't fault the house. I have a very strong feeling we will be back next year !
We had a brilliant stay at Methven House earlier this year. There were ten of us in total and there was more than enough space to accommodate all of us - especially the fantastic kitchen which is great for socialising. Being across the road from the beach was a huge bonus too. The house is beautiful and Louisa the owner was great at keeping in touch prior to and during our visit with any queries we had. We would go back in a heartbeat!
We can't praise the house or owners enough! We were a three generation party of six adults and three children. The house was large enough to accommodate even more and so well equipped that you don't
need to take anything with you. Owners have thought of everything. There's ample
crockery, cutlery, glasses, pots, baking and
serving dishes! The two kitchens with two
sets of white goods made having a large
group of people so easy. Sitting rooms and
bedrooms are home from home comfort.
We spent most of our time in the large
kitchen which overlooks the enclosed
charming patio and garden, ideal for large
family groups and energetic children! We will definitely be back and will be highly recommending to all our friends. It really was the perfect house for a family holiday.
We had a wonderful time here with all our family and dogs for a 50th anniversary celebration . It was a great location for the beach and local pubs and restaurants and the weather was great. We enjoyed eating outside in the charming garden which had a barbecue and a good supply of logs. We would definitely go back and recommend it to others. We were lucky with the weather but even with bad weather there are lots of places to visit on the coast and Edinburgh is an easy drive away. The house had plenty space which meant people could be quiet if they wanted and there were a selection of games to play . All in all a really memorable holiday
