About the Owner

I fell in love with this tranquil house by the biggest lake in the area and with direct views to the castle. It's such a beautiful place to re-charge your batteries and be inspired by the impressive unspoiled nature, culture (castles, music) great food and traditional architecture all around. Always worth a trip. We love helping our guests have a fabulous stay here.

Guestbook comments from the owner

“Fabulous location, comfortable, warm accommodation, with a view to die for. Very convenient for shops, bars and restaurants, all within walking distance. A car is handy but not essential, if you like walking. There are lots of walks in the area, many of them flat and with lovely scenery. The walk to Neuschwanstein Castle and to Fussen and Brunnen, were particular favourites. A visit to the castle is a must! We had lovely food wherever we went, a particular favourite the restaurant Helmerhof. This us our second visit, didn't want to leave and can't wait to go back. Silke and Caroline were very helpful and informative and supplied lots of good tourist information. Helen F.”

“We absolutely loved this apartment; spacious, modern, clean, fantastic garden and relaxing area. It was immaculate, well maintained. The views are stunning!

We would highly recommend this property to friends & family - it is everything it says it is & more! The views in particular surpass the description!. A.

Wonderful Holiday!

  • 5 of 5

Where to begin? Having found the Birkeneck easily with Silke's detailed directions, we drove from Munich & were greeted by Cornelia on arrival, who showed us around the apartment & spent lots of time generously sharing her local knowledge with us.

The apartment was such a great retreat to return to after days out exploring by bike & on foot as well as some longer excursions by car to Legoland & around the countryside. It was in tip-top shape, clean, and everything worked. The kitchen had everything we needed to self cater & German supermarkets are wonderful to find delicious fresh produce in! We were glad of the laundry facilities as we did get quite messy spending as much time outdoors as possible. The master bed was really comfortable & the sofa bed perfect for the kids. The massage chair an added bonus after days of biking around. It was great to relax on the outside terrace with a glass of wine of an afternoon & look across the open fields to see Neuschwanstein Castle so close!

We have 3 children & the ground floor apartment was just perfect for us, with the children enjoying exploring the garden & rambling around the beautiful neighbourhood. The whole are is superbly quiet & we loved walking along the roads, meeting cows, friendly locals with their dogs & eating a couple of breakfasts in the nearby restaurant ( about 200 paces away). Bike hire was easy & we could have explored forever. The countryside is spectacular, green & lush, just beautiful. We didn't want to leave! There is so much to do, from biking, swimming in one of the many ( cold!) lakes, following Nature Trails, or just relaxing with a good book in the sun at the Birkeneck.

Fussen is a lovely little town with a great public park & a nice central pedestrian area. We even found ourselves in Austria a couple of times without realising we'd crossed the invisible border! We'd love to plan a future trip to experience the Christmas Markets & the snow.

All in all we can highly recommend the Birkeneck for a peaceful nature- centred holiday. It would be great for a larger group too as several families could stay upstairs in the other apartments.

Thank you to Silke for arranging the ground floor for us knowing it would be great for the kids, & to Cornelia for being available to us at any time we needed.

From the Owner

Looking for the most beautiful places to live in worldwide I found this idyllic and undiscovered romantic corner at the border of Germany/Austria. The Romans, Celts and German Kings were attracted to this area. Stunning Neuschwanstein castle inspired Walt Disney to invent Cinderella castle and attracts more than 1M visitors every year. Astonishingly the region is still a secret to most Brits. This place offers everything: castles within a 3 mile radius. 5 lakes to swim, sail, canoe and windsurf during the hot summers. Fabulous skiing slopes during the sunny winters. Romantic Christmas markets and NY Eve's fireworks. Outdoor sports: horse riding, paragliding, hiking, cycling, golf, tennis. Excellent restaurants and cafes - great variety of life.
