Delightful Cottage In The Southdowns National Park - Wishing Well Cottage

Updated: 13-Oct-2016
Cottage in Wilmington, Nr. Alfriston, Sussex, England - 10 Minutes Walk From The Southdowns Way And The "Longman Of Wilmington"

Arriving at Wishing Well Cottage you will realise that you have arrived somewhere special. Step foot into your cosy sitting room, complete with inglenook fireplace and log burning stove, ideal for those chilly winter nights.  Comfy leather settees and armchairs invite you to kick off your shoes, sit back and relax.

The South Downs National Park represents one of the richest and most stunningly complex landscapes in England. As Britain's newest National Park, it stretches from the outskirts of Winchester in the west to the cliffs of Beachy Head near Eastbourne in the east.

At the heart of the South Down National Park is Cuckmere Valley. The valley snakes south from the village of Alfriston in East Sussex and opens out, spectacularly, at Cuckmere Haven and the English Channel, with magnificent views of the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs.

Wilmington is a stones throw from the South Downs Way. Half a mile from Wishing Well Cottage and you are standing at the foot of the Long Man of Wilmington, a 226 foot high hill figure cut into the downland turf on the 28° the Giant is one of the largest such representations of a man anywhere in the world. Follow the Long Man to the top of the South Downs and enjoy the stunning views for this area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Wishing Well cottage is the perfect location for your holiday on the Southdowns. The Wishing Well consists of a cozy sitting room open plan dining and kitchen area overlooking the garden. Two double bedrooms each with a bath, separate shower and w.c. en suite. Outside you can enjoy a private courtyard or if you wish spread further into the garden.

Follow the path across the village green and explore the delightful village of Wilmington with the remains of Wilmington Priory and the C12 parish church of St Mary & St Peter. Slightly further afield but within walking distance across the fields is Alfriston. Worth a visit is the Clergy House being the first property owned by the National Trust. Glyndebourne Opera house is a short drive away for that special visit to this famous venue. Literary fans will be delighted to visit Charleston Farmhouse, home to the Virgina Wolfe, Duncan Grant and the rest of the Bloomsbury set. Country Houses and delightful gardens abound in the area of "Outstanding Natural Beauty" ensures that you trip to the Cuckmere Valley will be packed with great days out.

My husband and I brought our 2 year old sone here on a 3-night mini-break from London for a bit of fun and relaxation before baby number two arrives. We could not have had a better time! We stayed in the Wishing Well Cottage and from the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome by our kind hosts. The cottage could not have been nicer....we were able to sleep in one of the lovely and comfortable rooms while our son slept in the neighbouring bedroom in a travel cot provided for us. All three of us slept wonderfully, which is more than we can say for when we're at home!

Our son quickly began to call the cottage his "holiday home", and enjoyed setting up his trains and playing in the lovely sitting room, where we were able to light a fire in the woodburning stove after he had gone to bed. Had it been summer we also would have enjoyed the garden.

The cottage was equipped with everything we could have needed, spotlessly clean, warm and inviting. We enjoyed evenings in on every night except one, where we hopped across the road and had an exquisite meal in the Crossways restaurant. We were very glad we did this - it was a real treat in fine dining!

One afternoon we also visited the Wishing Well Tea Room in our front garden, where the hosts were incredibly lovely and treated our son extremely well, even letting him go back to the kitchen to help get milk out of the fridge. The scones and tea were lovely and the atmosphere and decor was too.

The area was chock full of fun family activities, including Drusilla's zoo (complete with Thomas the Tank engine for little ones to ride on!), a must see. Middle Farm was also great fun and right down the road...we bought food there, visited the gift shop and restaurant, and our son enjoyed seeing all the farm animals up close and personal as well as playing in the hay play barn (especially with the foul weather, the latter was an enjoyable way for him to let off steam). On the way back to London we stopped at Brighton and visited the aquarium. Could have stayed for weeks and still found fun things to do.

We will definitely be returning!
