About Barry Ware

We moved to France permanently in 2006 and for the past eight years we have restored the house and barn - far removed from our previous careers in retail, restaurants and catering. We now enjoy the riverside terrace for relaxing and summer eating with a view on nature and the splash of swallows on the water.

Barry Ware purchased this barn in 2000

Why Barry Ware chose La Trimouille

We wanted a property a reasonable distance from the ports so we could drive down from home in a day. The Vienne is far enough south to catch the long, hot summers and the area is now served by two airports - Poitiers and Limoges - which are about an hour away. The countryside here reminded us of Oxfordshire where we lived.

What makes this barn unique

We purchased an historic house and barn in need of lots of renovation but we could see what the end result could be. The property is situated in the village square on the water's edge with all the local amenities close by and it is a convenient location for exploring.

The property was absolutely lovely. Everything we needed was there.

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was first class. It is idyllic here, time to chill out. Vivien and Barry met us when we arrived and showed us around the lovely Gite. Everything was perfect. The welcome pack was yummy especially the home made cake. We have stayed in a few properties in France, but this was the best, even the weather was good. Places to visit Chauvigny and Montmorillon.

A truly wonderful gite with all mod cons, beautifully decorated.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time in this gite. The terrace is a treat as the sun shines both mornings and evenings enabling meals at both times of day outside. You can be entertained by the local Ducks and Geese at the same time. There is a very good small supermarket next door for most requirements, alternatively a trip to the next town has all the large Supermarches. The owners are very helpful and will gladly offer info on all aspects of local happenings.

A lovely property

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Riverside Barn, in spite of disappointing weather. We were met by the owners and shown around, and they provided a very comprehensive welcome pack, which included a delicious home made cake. The house was comfortable, clean and had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay.

We had visited the area before, but enjoyed returning to St Sevin and Montmorillon. There is a lovely terrace overlooking the river, but we couldn't make as much use of this as we had hoped due to the weather.

The gite is quietly situated on the bank of the river, and a lovely place to stay.

very relaxing and comfortable

  • 4 of 5

Barry and Vivien are excellent hosts. They were there to greet us when we arrived and showed us around the Barn.It is very well appointed, immaculate and extremely comfortable. They are there whenever you need them but will also leave you alone to relax and enjoy your holiday. The Barn is right on the riverside and you can sit and watch the wildlife on the river from either the patio or living room. La Trimouille is lovely village with plenty of amenities including boulangerie, little supermarket (which is a few steps away) and great takeaway pizza!! Thank you both for a lovely stay.

Wonderful home

  • 5 of 5

This was probably the best house we have stayed in.

The house itself was like a brand new show home. Immaculately presented, clean enough to eat off the floor. Even the garage was perfect and uncluttered and spacious. The house had everything that you needed and a thoughtful welcome pack including wine, water, cheese and a baguette. Vivien even baked us a cake for our arrival, a very special touch.

The gite has a great location right by the river. It is next to a well stocked shop and opposite a bar. There is a Moroccan restaurant over the river, which was unfortunately closed during our stay.

La Trimouille is within easy reach of some beautiful towns, such as Montmorillion, Chauvigny, le Dorat and Bellac amongst others.

Barry and Vivien are great hosts, always available to recommend things to do and places to visit. The house has dozens of books about France, lots of local maps and guides.

I cannot recommend The Riverside Barn highly enough. This is a very special place indeed.

I do hope we can stay there again.

Thank you so much.

We couldn't have wished for better...

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of 4 with two teenaged children and we stayed for a week at this property and loved everything about it.

The house itself is immaculately clean, beautifully presented and brilliantly equipped. The 'welcome pack' was fantastic with delicious homemade cake, milk, butter, cheeses, wine and much more, plus Barry and Vivian had made sure that the house was really well stocked with all the usual annoying little things you have to buy like washing powder, toilet rolls, dishwasher tablets, tea, coffee, sugar etc etc.

We loved being so close to the river, the view up and downstream are beautiful and we enjoyed watching the ducks, kingfishers, swallows, fish and coypu (not otters as we originally thought!!) from the terrace or sitting room window. The terrace itself is great and a perfect place to enjoy the sun, again it has everything you could possibly need and is so prettily planted.

The village of La Trimouille is quiet but not dead and has everything you need... a very well equipped shop next door (where are got our daily crossiants and baguette) and a great little bar/restaurant over the road and even a florist and a pharmacy. We went to the bar/restaurant most evenings for an early drink and the staff were very friendly and also ate there one evening and had a great pizza.

There is also so much to do in the surrounding area - we did a fantastic 11km circular walk from the house one day that took us along the river. Also we went kayaking in a nearby town Chauvigny which was great fun. My son and husband also used the tennis courts that are in the village and were very impressed with them. I also recommend the shops in Poitiers - so much variety and great for clothes! Also the nearby town of Mortmorillion is definitely worth a visit.

Finally, Barry and Vivian are wonderful hosts - such lovely people and really knowledgable about the area so handy to ask if you want advice or recommendations.

We have stayed in a lot of places in France but I can honestly say that this has been the best for so many reasons and is really excellent value.

We look forward to our return visit!
