Kenmuir Holiday Cottage is a charming traditional Galloway cottage in the Rhins of Galloway, near Sandhead in SW Scotland, and just 8 miles from Portpatrick. Built in the 1860s and set in its own large private garden, the cottage was refurbished to a high standard in 2011. Still retaining its rustic charm, it is fully modernised and provides luxury and comfort for up to four people. The cottage has a comfortable main bedroom with a double bed, and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds. Ideally suited for a couple or a small family, the cottage provides privacy, seclusion and relaxation. Pets are also welcome, at no extra charge. The area is fantastic for walking, bird-watching, cycling, swimming, sailing, fishing, golf, and riding, and boasts the UK’s only Dark Sky Park in the Galloway Forest. Wildlife abounds in the region, including deer, numerous sea birds, birds of prey, otters, red squirrels, hares, wild goats and seals. The cottage is close to some spectacular beaches - Luce Bay extends to 7 miles long, whilst Ardwell Bay, a short walk from the cottage, is often deserted. The location provides wonderful diverse landscapes, with ancient woodlands, rolling green countryside, forest trails, miles of rugged coastline, and beautiful safe sandy beaches. Local attractions include Logan Botanic Garden, the Mull of Galloway (Scotland's most southerly point), Logan Fishpond, and the villages of Port Patrick and Port Logan with their harbours, shops, and restaurants. Best of all it is one of the quietest holiday destinations in Scotland.

About the Owner

Although born and brought up in Edinburgh, my links to Dumfries & Galloway go back to when my father was stationed at Loch Ryan in the war, when he flew Sunderland flying boats. Afterwards he brought the family down to Ardwell every summer for their holidays. It was an idyllic place to stay with the long clean beaches, and so much to explore! Forrest, my partner, also comes from Edinburgh, and a branch of his family farmed sheep and cattle near Wamphray, south of Moffat. He has many happy memories of holidays at the farm, collecting eggs and helping dip the sheep. In 2010, after leaving our jobs, we decided to renovate Kenmuir Cottage which I had bought in 2006. After the work was complete, we moved down to Dumfries & Galloway permanently, and now live in a cottage near Gatehouse of Fleet.

Away from it all

We had a wonderfully relaxed, away from all the hustle and bustle, week in Kenmuir Cottage.

Kenmuir was just as we had imagined and hoped for, a complete getaway.

The cottage was beautifully maintained, very modern but still with rustic charm.

The garden was a massive bonus for our dog as it was large and completely secure. We managed to get a couple of clear nights to stand outside and look st the stars.

If you want peace and quiet then the cottage is perfect, apart from the odd car or something flying above our heads we heard nothing.

All the mod cons are there, TV, DVDs and books, also a wood burner to keep warm of a night to go along with the excellent electric heaters.

The area of The Rhins is easily accessible from north to south and east to west, I would recommend The Mull of Galloway and Portpatrick as our standouts. The local beach is only 10 mins away on foot but very rocky until you get to the sand. Sandhead is 5 mins away in a car and has miles of sandy beach to walk on and also a handy store and a nice pub.

The owners are on hand if you need anything but everything is pretty straightforward and all explained.

We would recommend Kenmuir to anyone looking for a complete and utter break from everyday life, once you return home you realise what you're missing.

I bought the cottage as a holiday home so that I could escape from a busy and stressful job in Edinburgh. I loved the peace and tranquility of the Rhins and had many happy memories of Ardwell Gardens and Sandhead from my childhood. The beaches are lovely, and the one at Luce Bay is seven miles long - perfect for a huge range of activities from kayaking to windsurfing, and swimming to dog walking! There are long cliff-top walks, gardens open to the public, and lots of wildlife to see. There are lots of places to walk, and since the Rhins is reasonably flat, it is easy to explore the area by cycle too! Sharing the cottage experience with so many guests has been an exciting and rewarding experience, and we love the fact our guests are as enthusiastic about the cottage and area as we are!

Coast/Beach:

The cottage is close to some spectacular beaches. Luce Bay, at Sandhead, is just 3 miles away, and is a beautiful 7 mile stretch of sandy beach which makes a great playground for children and adults alike. Ardwell Bay, a short walk or drive from the cottage, is often deserted, and is shown in one of the photographs in the gallery.

Travel:

Nearest airports are Prestwick, Glasgow and Edinburgh. From Glasgow it takes approximately 2½ hours to drive to the cottage, and from Edinburgh 3½ hours.

The nearest port is Cairnryan, 14 miles away, with Stena Line and P&O ferries to and from Ireland.

Distances:

Kenmuir Cottage is located 3 miles from Sandhead, Dumfries and Galloway. The cottage is 8 miles south of Stranraer and 8 miles south east of Portpatrick.

Further Details:

Nearby places of interest include Ardwell Gardens which has an array of beautiful plants and many interesting features such as the Japanese garden, pond walk, and the walled garden. Logan Botanic Garden, famed for its rare and exotic plants, is just a short distance from Port Logan with its famous Fish Pond built into the rocks.

Sandhead, the nearest village, has a small well-stocked Post Office/shop, whilst the Tigh na Mara offers meals and drinks. A beautiful 7 mile stretch of sandy beach on Luce Bay makes a great playground for children and adults alike. Kirkmadrine Church has some of the earliest Christian burial stones, and is located directly between the cottage and Sandhead.

The Mull of Galloway, Scotland's most southerly point, is an RSPB nature reserve. You can visit the lighthouse, wander round the rugged coastal paths, enjoy the great views, or visit the Gallie Craig coffee house/shop by the car park.

Portpatrick, approximately 10 miles by road from the cottage, is a beautiful little town, with a quaint and natural harbour. It has several antique/gift shops, and is the end of the Southern Upland Way which crosses Scotland. Both sides of the harbour offer fantastic walks along the cliff edge. On a sunny day, holidaymakers can sit outside the many hotels and guest houses and relax. A cliff-top walk leads to the ruins of Dunskey Castle, and to the north the walled garden, woodland walk, maze and Tearoom of Dunskey Estate are well worth visiting.

Stranraer is the nearest large town, and has many shops, including Tesco, Morrisons, Boots, and Argos, and parking is free. The Museum and St John's Tower are major attractions, whilst Agnew Park boasts an adventure playground and miniature railway, and Stranraer Golf Club is open to visitors.

Booking Notes:
A 30% non-returnable deposit (by cheque, PayPal, or direct to our bank) should be paid when booking your stay to secure the reservation, and the balance should be paid in full at least 4 weeks before the start of your holiday. As this balance will only be refunded if the cottage can be re-let, we strongly advise you take out holiday cancellation insurance.

A £100 refundable accidental damage deposit is also required 4 weeks before the start of your holiday, to cover breakages or damage.

Changeover Day:
During April to October inclusive, and at Christmas and New Year, the changeover day is Saturday, otherwise the changeover day is flexible. Guests are asked to arrived close to 3pm, and leave by 10am, unless by prior arrangement.

Notes on prices:
Please note that Kenmuir Cottage does not apply an additional charge for dogs, bed linen, or towels.

A deposit of 30% of the booking fee is payable immediately, so that we can reserve the cottage in your name. The balance (the booking fee minus the deposit), is payable at least 4 weeks before you arrive. A £100 refundable Accidental Damage Deposit is also payable at least 4 weeks before you arrive. Barring accidents, this will be refunded to you after you leave.

The property stands by itself, overlooking the North Channel, and from the living room you can see the coast of Ireland. Although secluded, it's only 3 miles from the nearest village which has a restaurant, pub, general store, and that fabulous 7 mile long beach. The cottage has been renovated to a high standard, and was originally an old Galloway farm cottage. It is very cosy, with great views from all the rooms. There is a log/coal burning stove, and a very well-equipped kitchen with a corner nook. The bedroom is roomy and very romantic with a chandelier, and the colours red, black and white are a theme throughout the cottage. The garden is very large with some pine trees and a bike shed, and is secure for kids and pets alike. There is enough room for a boat, and lots of space for games.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: Please note that Kenmuir Cottage operates a strict No Smoking policy. Outside: There a large fenced private garden, mainly grassed over, with a large picnic bench, 4 sun loungers, and other outdoor chairs and tables. From the garden you can see the North Channel with the coast of Ireland in the distance. The cottage is situated on a farm road with little passing traffic, and there is a large secure shed where the BBQ set is stored. We have also got boxes for re-cycling. There is a plentiful wood supply for the stove in the living room, plus a starter pack of coal. The shed can also be used for storing cycles, fishing/walking gear, and outdoor equipment. A small fishing boat can be kept in the garden if required. A selection of outdoor games is available in the shed, and Badminton, volleyball, and tennis can all be played, To the front of the cottage is a white picket fence with pink roses with two secure gates which lead to the parking space, large enough for two cars. Two other vehicles, or a trailer, can be parked down the side of the cottage. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Freshly-cleaned good-quality towels and bed linen are provided for visitors at no extra charge.
