About the host

We found Villa Gelsi in Italy after an extensive search of nearly 40 properties during a very hot summer in 2003, with the help of our youngest daughter who now lives and works in Italy. An abandoned farmhouse surrounded by rolling and peaceful countryside, the building was in need of major renovations and improvements to create an elegant 4-bedroom vacation home. After several years of often frustrating operation, this 200-year-old farm was finally brought back to life and ready for occupation in 2008.
When we are not savoring the delights of the Marche countryside with our family, or with our granddaughter who lives in northern Italy, we enjoy occasional short breaks in our Grade II thatched cottage in rural Dorset, which is also available for rent. See reference property E8182

Why they chose this property
Our Italian real estate search ended when we arrived in the Marche, Villa Gelsi is not too far from the sea. This agricultural region, in the eastern part of the country, is often described as the "real Italy" and much of it remains untouched by hordes of visitors.
The property is approximately 55 minutes drive from Ancona airport and is approximately 400 meters from the nearest minor asphalted road. Complete privacy and tranquility are just two of the pleasures of Villa Gelsi.
The nearby countryside is dotted with delightful medieval hilltop villages. The two local towns - San Lorenzo in Campo and Pergola - are a short drive away and are still untouched by tourism. Both have lively colorful weekly local markets, local shops and supermarkets.

What makes this property unique
We have tried to preserve elements of the past inside the farmhouse, such as the old beams, a manger and the original warm stone left intact on some walls. Combined with the past are modern comforts; such as air conditioning, thermostatic showers, free WiFi, flat screen satellite TV, a stunning 12 x 6 meter swimming pool and a 21st century standard of comfort.
There are numerous restaurants in the area. The food is generally locally sourced, freshly prepared, simple, tasty and usually relatively cheap. Most evenings you will find themselves teeming with locals enjoying a typical, lively Italian evening. All details and directions are available at the house.
The locals may not speak much English, but they are universally considered to be very friendly. There is a lot of places to go and things to do.
