Walt Disney's ancestral home, Le Chateau de Monfreville - Rose Cottage

Updated: 26-Oct-2016
Cottages in Isigny sur Mer, Bayeux, Normandy, France - Idylic Location. 20 minute drive to the landing beaches of Omaha & Utah

The cottages are situated within the grounds of Le Chateau de Monfreville, the ancestral home to Walt Disney's family dating back a 1000 years ago. The cottages are spacious & tastfully decorated. The cottages have their own private gardens & patio area. The chateau overlooks a national park which has superb wild life and walks. Within the grounds of the chateau, there is a natural swimming pond, a hot tub, a ping pong table, table football and an honesty shop with the essentials. In the summer months, The Bread Fairy is out & about delivering pastries & French bread to your door every morning.

Monfreville is a 4km drive to Isigny sur Mer where you will find a delightful port with supermarkets, restaurants, markets & cafes. The Chateau was commissioned almost a thousand years ago by William the Conqueror & was once home to Walt Disney’s family & then later occupied by German soldiers during WW2. The Chateau is steeped with history & central to the D Day Landing Beach of Omaha & The American Cemetery and Utah Beach, close to the villages of Sainte Mere Eglise & Sainte Marie du Mont. The medieval town of Bayeux is home to The British Cemetery & the famous Bayeux Tapestry. Mont St Michel, Monet’s Gardens, Honfleur & Paris are all great for a day’s adventure & for fun times there are miles & miles of golden sandy beaches making this a superb vacation for all ages. Normandy is known as the bread basket of France and you won't be disappointed. Isigny sur Mer is home to world class butter, cream and cheese. There is also a caramel factory producing all things gorgeous! Fish markets are open every morning and there is always a market on each day of the week. Chateau de Monfreville is a special retreat for all those that visit. There are plenty of cider farms in the area where you can go and taste the delights of Cider, Pommeau and Calvados.

A truly unique place, extra-ordinary, thanx to the never ending, staggering thoughtfulness and genuine smiles & helpfulness of the McKinley clan! Enormous thanx for a memorable holiday. We shall recommend you hugely to friends with young families

“A-M-A-Z-I-N-G” – you have it all so right here. The little details have given us so much pleasure. An absolute joy to stay here. Moules Frites night fabulous. What more can we say – we will definately be back.

What a lovely time we had in Pond Cottage. This place is magical & we all consider ourselves fortunate to spend the week here. We particularly enjoyed the Bayeux Tapestry, Mont St Michel & of course exploring the beaches & museums of Normandy. And the food...... we have been spoiled on Isigny butter & can never go back! Thank you for your hospitality.

The McDonough & Ballinger Families.

I stayed in Pond Cottage for a week with elderly parents , and enjoyed everything about the accommodation . The cottage has everything needed for a home away from home feeling. Well equipped, spacious, comfortable, and quiet. The property is only minutes away from major D Day sites, Bayeux etc. The owners Paul,Zoe and Molly are wonderful hosts, bringing us bread every day, and providing us with farm eggs and a great welcome pack. The chateau and gardens are really beautiful. I cannot recommend this property highly enough.

We celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary and could not of picked a better spot. We would highly recommend a visit here. Zoe and Paul have ticked all the boxes in offering wonderful hospitality.

No better place to stay

  • 5 of 5

There is quite simply no better place to stay when visiting the region. The cottage is perfect for a couple of people and has all the amenities you could want. The kitchen is well equipped to enable you to cook whatever you want, or you could head into Grandcamp or Isgny for a fine meal. Paul and Zoe are great and the hospitality they provide is above reproach.

Fairytale setting for a winter break

  • 5 of 5

We just had the best of times at the Chateau de Monfreville's Rose Cottage. Loved the cosy interior, wood burning stove, well equipped kitchen, comfortable bed - and having the chateau grounds to explore. Paul and Zoe are the best of hosts - pointed us in the direction of great restaurants, sights and shopping. We will definitely return in summer - tempted by the gypsy caravans and their legendary 'moules frites' nights!

The listing description understates how good the experience was. The location was brilliant; beautiful, serene scenery; abundance of friendly animals and a variety of activities that can be engaged in on the premises. Zoe and Paul, the owners of the property, treated us as if we were family. This property is definitely the pick of all the properties I've stayed in. I feel as though I've made good friends in Paul and Zoe by staying at the Chateau. Thank you for your hospitality and the wonderful stay. I hope more people book the property and have the same experience as we did.

From the Owner

The Chateau has a unique charm. Its a wonderful property to be around & the grounds are beautiful. It is tranquility at its best. There is buckets of history to be had in the area and the chateau itself, which dates back to William the Conqueror & was home to Walt Disney's family.
