Cottage in La Chèvrerie, Nr. Ruffec, Charente, Poitou-Charentes, France - The lovely Old Stone Hobogîte, Your Perfect Getaway - Pay Safely via PayPal

While our lovely Charentais barn was being renovated, we often camped out in an old stone outhouse - our daughter affectionately christened this the Hobo house, and the name has stuck. It was so nice in this friendly little cottage that we decided to convert it, and rent it out as a gîte - but only when there’s no-one in the barn. This is how you will have the whole acre of gardens - and the pool during the summer - entirely to yourselves; a true get-away-from-it-all escape.

As you will see from the pictures, we have carried out the conversion sympathetically, to a very high standard, providing everything we think is important; a local oak dining table, a dishwasher, Denby bone china, sharp knives, two types of corkscrew, a huge flat-screen TV with lots of good DVDs, a large firm and especially comfortable bed, a multi-jet “shower pod” like something out of Star Trek... and outside, a vast north-facing shady hangar with a large ceiling fan for those hot summer lunches, a choice of two barbecues and of course outdoor ping-pong, all sheltered from both sun and rain.

Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout. Even down by the pool, so you can do a little casual surfing as you relax on the comfortable pillows of our hardwood sun-loungers, with an iced drink from the pool-side fridge and bar. Or in a deckchair under our small plantation of mature pine trees which provide a pretty spot to relax with a book in pine-scented shade. Not forgetting a cooling shower in the wet-room in our Pool House, converted from what is probably the finest stone-built chicken coop west of the Charente!

After your lunch in the cool of the shaded hangar, another swim, and a 6km cycle-ride or drive into Ruffec, to the twice-weekly market or the spanking new branch of E.Leclerc, for vital supplies, you’ll be ready for an extremely leisurely al-fresco apéritif and barbecue; remember in the wonderful summer micro-climate of the Charente, it stays warm until 2am. And so to bed in that very comfortable bed in the old stone “Hobogîte” ...

About the Owner

The owners, Rob & Lene, decided to buy a holiday home in the Charente as we entered our 5th decade, nearly 10 years ago. While our lovely Charentais barn was being renovated, we often camped out in an old stone outhouse. Our daughter affectionately christened this the Hobo House, and the name stuck.

It was so nice in the "Hobo House" that we decided to convert it and rent it out - but only when there’s no-one in the barn - this is how you will have the whole acre of garden - and the pool - entirely to yourselves!

Lovely gite

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a 2 week holiday in Hobogite. We enjoyed every minute. A perfect getaway for 2 people. The gite is well located and has everything you could want. With the very high temperatures while we were there the pool was a blessing.

We have had many gite holidays over the past 40 years and Hobogite is amongst the best.

Cosy and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Recently returned from another enjoyable stay at the comfortable and well equipped Hobo Gite. This was an ideal base for us whilst renovating nearby property. We found the owners accommodating and welcoming. We plan to return soon and would not hesitate to recommend.

Hobo Gite

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a very relaxing week spent at Hobo gite, it is a lovely gite for a couple in a very tranquil setting.

The gite lived up to all our expectations and had everything you could possibly need or want. The welcome pack and larder store are a very welcome extra that is not always provided in a lot of gites. The gite was spotless on arrival and the outside areas are very well maintained.

We would highly recommend booking this gite and hope to return again ourselves in the near future.

We would highly recommend a visit to Verteuil sur Charente a beautiful village 15 minutes drive away with a lovely Chateau and old watermill and great riverside restaurant for coffee and cakes across the road from the old mill.

Lovely little house

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a great week spent in this beautiful little house. It's exactly as described (if anything, it's even better!) The house has everything you could possibly need, there's a really well thought out welcome pack for when you arrive, the house is immaculate and the gardens are lovely. The area was perfect for us, peaceful with great cycle routes on the doorstep and lots of sleepy little towns & villages to explore. We didn't have any problems while we were there but there's an English caretaker available, it really suited us to be left to our own devices. The garden has red squirrels and a little owl who brazenly sits and watches you....... Book it! You won't be disappointed!

Owner's Response: We were so happy to hear how much you enjoyed your stay at The Hobogîte, and we hope that we may look forward to welcoming you there again in the future. Yes, we're lucky enough to have several Red Squirrels and Little Owls in the garden; they do make very agreeable companions while reading a book or doing a spot of sunbathing! Thanks again for your lovely comments.

Hobogite

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our weeks holiday at the Hobogite. It was exactly what we were looking for - a place to relax and recharge batteries. The Hobogite itself has everything you could need and is finished and furnished to a high standard. The grounds are beautiful with plenty of places to sit and enjoy the sun or read a good book. The pool and table tennis are added bonuses both of which we took advantage of daily. It has been all too easy to book and enjoy the Hobogite and will definitely recommend it to friends and family looking for a peaceful place to relax. Thanks Rob and Lene for creating this mini oasis (and Bill for finding my watch!)

Location

From the Owner

We wanted to go for our holidays somewhere far enough South to get proper hot summer weather, but not so far that it was more than an easy day's drive. The Hobogite is just 400 miles from Calais, on motorways which have very little traffic - even in the Summer, as they don't head either towards or away from Paris. This is a quiet rural location where you can really lose yourself, far away from the usual hurly-burly. The Charente has a wonderful micro-climate which provides lots of sun, and very few overcast or cloudy days; it apparently has the most sunshine of any area in France away from the Mediterranean.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Poitiers at 40 Miles Nearest Barpub : Villefagnan at 4 Miles Nearest Ferry : Caen at 250 Miles Nearest Train : Ruffec at 4 Miles Nearest Motorway : N10 at 3 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Ruffec at 4 Miles Nearest Beach : Aire de Réjallant in Ruffec at 5 Miles Car: necessary

Coast/Beach:

Nearby beaches include a small lakeside swimming and fishing development 9km away in Villefagnan, and another larger one 10km away on the Charente River at the Aire de Réjallant in Ruffec, where there is also canoeing and fine dining in the old mill house.

Travel:

We are only 40 minutes away from Poitiers Airport, and an hour and a half or so from Limoges, Bordeaux or La Rochelle airports. As we are in a rural location, a car is essential. We are about 5km from a junction on the N10 motorway, which is just over 400 miles from Calais by motorway.

Distances:

The town of Ruffec is only 6km away, just past the N10 motorway. It lies on the Charente River and has a twice-weekly market, several large supermarkets, restaurants, etc.

Facilities

From the Owner

Our rural retreat is on the edge of a tiny hamlet; if we see 3 cars a day passing the road at the end of our drive, we feel honoured! We are however just 5km away from the N10 motorway, and our local town of Ruffec. We are proud to say that we have our very own "USP" (Unique Selling Point) - we only rent out the Gite when we are not using our converted Barn, so you have SOLE USE of the pool (from May to September) and of course the whole acre of gardens, laid mostly to lawn and gravel terraces, with a small plantation of mature pine trees providing welcome summer shade.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: This is a real rural retreat for two, far away from the crowds - if you see 3 cars a day passing on the small road at the end of the drive, you should feel honoured! You are however just 5km away from the N10 motorway - and, within 6km or so, you will also find the local Market Town of Ruffec with all the restaurants, local shops and supermarkets you could want - as well, of course, as the Charente River for swimming, canoeing, fine dining, or simply sitting and enjoying it all. We have made the decision not to provide television reception, as we feel it is not really compatible with our "get-away-from-it-all" ethos. Instead, we prefer the large flat screen TV with great 5.1 cinema surround-sound, for playing DVDs (we provide a good selection of films for those quiet evenings in), or for playing your own music through the cable provided for your iPod or MP3 player. Free Wi-Fi is of course provided throughout the property and gardens, even down by the pool. Outside: You will have sole use of the pool (7.3m x 3.7m) which is surrounded by a large fenced deck, fully equipped with cushioned hardwood sun beds, tables & chairs with large parasols - also a small bar including a fridge! Then there is the large shady hangar (i.e. a covered lean-to) with a wooden dining table and chairs, two barbecues and an electric ceiling fan. There is even plenty of room under the hangar for table-tennis on the all-weather table provided. The garden shed also incorporates an overhanging tiled roof section, to provide another pleasant shaded area for reading or simply enjoying the garden. The extensive raised patio areas all around the Barn are also equipped with assorted chairs and tables for a sunnier dining experience... Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The property is cleaned and serviced on the day of your arrival, and the pool checked every Saturday. Two bath towels, two hand towels and two large beach-towels, as well as the bed-linen, are included in the rental rate, but daily maid service is not. Other: Next to the pool is a lovely old stone chicken coop, which has been converted to a changing room and wet-room, with a walk-around shower, wash basin and wc
