About Elsa Mckenzie

This house belonged to Winnie, my mother in law, she had wonderful holidays here, visiting relatives, swimming from local beaches and she always welcomed family and friends. We have been holidaying in Mevagissey for a long time, we live in Suffolk at the most easterly point in the UK and we have travelled west to Mevagissey at least 3 times a year. Alastair is a civil engineer who visited the area often as a child, Elsa teaches part time. Our 4 grown up children continue to visit the house with their children and partners. Since the early days we have continued to update and improve Winnie's View into a lovely comfortable home from home for our visitors. Our latest project has been to refit and open up the kitchen area.

Elsa Mckenzie purchased this house in 1980

Why Elsa Mckenzie chose Mevagissey

Our children at all ages have always been very fond of Mevagissey and have many happy memories of their holidays there. Now they are nearly all grown up and some have children of their own and they still love to visit with us or with their friends.

The south Cornish coast is just stunning, we are now endeavouring to walk the coast path (in chunks). The beaches are beautiful surrounded by amazing landscapes. Winnie's View can be used as a base for exploration, visits to many attractions, or as a comfortable place to return to after a long day at the beach. The house is comfortable, well equipped and practical with space for people, their kit and parking for 2 cars. We have laid out the bedrooms so that extended family can come too. It's a short walk down to the village for pubs, shops and a walk round the harbour. Fishing is still taking place in Mevagissey as you will see by the number of fishing boats in the harbour. Local fish is very fresh and can be bought from the kiosk on the inner harbour. The views from the house never cease to amaze, winter or summer.

What makes this house unique

The amazing view and the changing light on the sea is a tonic for our stress levels!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just a quick note to say we had a lovely time at Winnie's View. It's a fantastic house in a perfect location and we really didn't want to come home!

We didn't want to leave!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent the most amazing week at Winnie's View and we can't say enough about the property. It is so well-placed on the top of the hill with sea views from many rooms and an easy walk down into the village where we spent quite a bit of time eating and strolling around. Winnie's View is a cute place, very updated and nicely decorated with more space than we anticipated. We used the fireplace every single night which on these cold January nights was wonderful, and the convenience of the garden was a life-saver for our little puppy. We were also very pleased to have parking for our car, as we heard (and could see when we got to Mevagissey) that parking is at a premium in many places. Worth mentioning, my husband and I used the property as a ''working vacation'' which was great because the wifi connection is excellent - we didn't have a single outage and the speed was better than at our own home! - We are thrilled with our experience- the rental logistics were all managed well- and we hope to make this an annual trip! Thank you to Winnie and the team.

Lovely spacious accommodation with spectacular view

  • 4 of 5

Really enjoyed a 3 night stay here and would have loved to stay longer. The house is clean and well maintained and equipped. The views over Mevagissey are beautiful and it's only a short walk to the middle of town and the harbour. Very steep hill though and you need to be aware of this if it might be an issue for you. Some nice eating places in town. We ate at The Harbour Tavern and SharksFin and both were very nice and right on the harbour itself.

Visited St Mawes and Truro and would recommend both for different reasons. St Mawes very picturesque and Truro is a very attractive city with all the usual shops. The cathedral is very pretty. Also visited the Eden Project and enjoyed the day although it is quite expensive. The food there is quite pricey but is at least way superior in quality to food you usually buy in other attractions and was very enjoyable. I would definitely recommend a visit if you haven't been before.

I would love to return to Cornwall again and would definitely highly recommend this property. The only reason I haven't given it a 5 star is that the heating wasn't working during our stay and in fairness to the owners we did not alert them to this until our last day as it wasn't a big problem for us as the shower worked fine, the weather was good and we were out much of the time. A minor quibble also was a lack of plug sockets in convenient places for items like a hairdryer but again this would not put me off renting this property again.

All in all an excellent rental property and would highly recommend.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review and also thank you for your earlier message today with regard to the hot water problem. We always appreciate people telling us about issues that need rectifying and our heating engineer has been called. We are always pleased when our visitors enjoy the locality and find our house comfortable. Regards Elsa

Beautiful views and lots of space!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay here, the views are gorgeous, especially that which you wake up to in the master bedroom and in the lounge! The light in the house is quite something, and we were very lucky to have warm and sunny weather. The kids (5, 3 & 18months) particularly enjoyed the walks up and down to the harbour along the coast path which runs down from the playing fields/cliff just along from the house, playing for hours on the jetty collecting seaweed to dry 'to make seaweed tea'. There is also what feels like your own private beach the opposite way along the path along the cliff towards Pentewan (Polstreath). Heligan Gardens was superb as well as the mussels at The Fountain Inn. I love this place and am already booking in our next stay.

Perfect location

  • 5 of 5

This property suited our needs perfectly. It slept our party of 7 comfortably, which is hard to find (a double, bunk beds and a room with 1 double and 1 single). It had everything we needed, including towels. Parking is tight in the cul-de-sac and the drive is too steep to put a car on. If you're careful, you can fit two cars on the hardstanding next to the drive. The views are amazing and the location hard to beat. It takes approx 5 minutes to walk the path to the village and harbour of mevagissey. Behind the house is a large playing field with swings. If you walk through this you can join the coastal path. Just a short way along here, you can access a small cove via several very steep steps. The waters were very calm when we were there and we were able to launch our sea kayaks just outside the harbour and explore these quiet coves. We even saw a seal.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. We are always pleased when our visitors enjoy their stay, it's what it's all about and we work hard to provide for this. The picture of the seal you posted on our winniesview Facebook page was a complete delight. Thanks again.

Wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful 3 nights at Winnie's View betweem Xmas and New Year. I probably shouldn't be telling too many people but the house is a real find, it's cosy and homely with fantastic views. The location is perfect for the Coast Path and strolling down to Mevagissey. We would love to return in the future.

Wonderful relaxing time

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic views, wonderful scenery and great place to stay. The ideal holiday home for a break in the mevagissy area. Everything was clean and well maintained and great that our dog was also welcome. Great selection of dog and child friendly pubs in the village with excellent food. I would recommend staying here, especially if you enjoy walking as it is very close to the beautiful coastal path walks.
