About Talfryn and Shelley Llewellyn
Talfryn and Shelley Llewellyn moved to France with their 3 children from the UK in 2011. After an extensive search across France trying to find the perfect property they discovered La Cannonerie, nestled amongst the Cognac Vines in the Petite Champagne. Their dream was to create quality self catering cottages for guests to enjoy and experience a home away from home. 3 years of renovation later La Cannonerie was ready to open to guests in the summer of 2014.
Talfryn and Shelley Llewellyn purchased this cottage in 2011

Talfryn and Shelly were very welcoming and gave us loads of great tips of where to visit. The cottage is very comfortable and had all the facilities you would need. Our girls (4 and 8) had a great time with all the other children in a very safe environment. The pool was a good size and the steps provide a great shallow end for the children to play. La Cannonerie is quite central so visiting all the different places of interest was quite easy. We have stayed in lots of different accommodation before and not once did I feel uncomfortable in the cottage (which is new for me). To the point that I didn't really want to leave. In conclusion, we have booked up for next year, which in my view could not be a higher compliment.
We had a wonderful, relaxing holiday at La Cannonerie. The property was full of French rustic charm, but with every modern convenience. The location is idyllic set in fields of vines and sunflowers and gave us the peace and tranquility we were looking for. Talf and Shelley were the perfect hosts, always available to offer help and advice on places of interest, but never intrusive. All in all the perfect place to relax and explore this beautiful region of France. We will definitely be going back.
Beautiful. Comfortable. Family Friendly!
Beautiful, comfortable, and FAMILY FRIENDLY! My husband, 18-month old daughter, and I stayed here for what turned out to be the most relaxing three nights of our two-week vacation in France. While my husband and I had visited Paris several times, this was our first visit to Reaux and our first time traveling internationally with the baby. After navigating the Paris bistro scene (often doing without changing tables, high-chairs, or even toilette seats!), we were delighted to find an oasis where our family could finally relax and soak in the simple beauty of Charantes .
Before we arrived, the owners had already assembled a fold-away crib complete with baby safe linens (I’m a stickler about cribs, and this was nicer than the one I lugged from Paris!). The Bathrooms had every luxury, a large bathtub, quality soaps (even a body scub!) and towels fit for an king. My personal favorite, however, was the spacious and beautiful kitchen. On our first day there, we did an impromptu stop at the wonderful town market. I was so excited by the offerings that I bought fresh eggs, steaks, and some veggies without first checking whether we had the utensils to cook them! I was so relieved to find that our kitchen came fully stocked with everything I would need (paring knife, garlic press, black pepper grinder, frying pans, AND A LE CREUSET DUTCH OVEN!).
Our dinner was fantastic and the next morning I also prepared a Fritata which our baby enjoyed from the comfort of her high chair. She especially enjoyed snacking on the owner’s home-made honey. Yet another perk of our stay!
The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable. Wood and kindling were always ready for our fires. We never had to ask for anything. Our needs were anticipated and met, and nothing was left to chance. My only regret is that we had not allotted more time for our stay here. FIVE STARS! WE WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK!

La Cannonerie is located about an hour from the coast. It is easy to explore the Gironde estuary, the beaches of the Cote Sauvage, La Palmyre and Royan. The Ile de Re and the Ile d'Oleron are close enough to day trip. The long sandy beaches are all of fantastic quality and great for surfers too.

The small village of Reaux is 1km away and an easy walk or cycle along a country lane to pick up a baguette or a coffee and a croissant at the local cafe/bar/shop and post office. Next door is the hairdressers and upstairs the excellent beauty salon which offers a range of massages and facials. Appointments can be made on your behalf by request. In the village there is also a large municipal swimming pool open in July and August along with tennis courts and petanque.
The pretty and popular spa town of Jonzac is 5km away. It contains all the services you would expect of a small town as well as a spectacular castle with cafe and tree lined square, fantastic covered French market full of local seasonal produce and wonderful seafood from the coast. Also in Jonzac is Les Antilles, a brilliant tropical indoor water oasis complete with swimming pools and a water slide.
Plenty of historic towns to visit within about an hour: Saintes, Cognac, Angouleme, Royan, La Rochelle, Bordeaux, St Emilion and Blaye. Lots of beautiful scenery to enjoy including fields of sunflowers and plenty of cognac vineyards. Outdoor activities include kayaking (at Jarnac in particular), cycling (the cycle tracks in the pine forests at the beach are particularly brilliant for this), and some lovely walking. Pretty coastal villages at Talmont and Mortagne, dune backed beaches, oysters, seafood, wine, cognac and pineau are all waiting to be enjoyed. Cognac Blues Passion is a brilliant open air music event held annually around the first week of July. Acts of 2012 included Tom Jones, Sting, Hugh Laurie and The Cranberries. And of course plenty of brocantes to visit too.
