Updated: 21-Nov-2016
Cottage in Cromdale, Grantown-on-Spey, Scottish Highlands, Scotland - Rural Location On Small Holding, 15 Minutes Walk To River Spey, Ideal Base For All Outdoor Pursuits

Milton Cottage is a superb fully refurbished cottage set within our family grounds. Sleeps four comfortably between one double room and one twin room, a well equipped kitchen to meet all your culinary needs and a bright family bathroom with bath/shower over. The living room, where you can relax and admire the stunning views of The Cromdale Hills from the large window, has a feature open fire and dining area. All rooms are freshly decorated to a high standard which enhances the charm and comfort of the cottage. A welcome pack consisting of bread, milk, butter, fresh orange juice, our free range eggs, locally sourced bacon and shortbread biscuits awaits your arrival. Electricity and heating are included in your rental, but we do politely request that you are considerate with your usage and do not leave on unnecessary lights, heaters or the water heater, also included is a 50 kg bag of coal. Milton is located in the small village of Cromdale where we have our small holding with friendly Sheep, Highland Cow and Free Range Chickens. Our well equipped Cottage is a great base to explore Northern Scotland including local attractions such as Strathspey Steam Railway, Landmark Adventure Park, The Heather Centre, Highland Wildlife Park, Tree Zone, Cairngorm Brewery and the Ospreys at RSPB Loch Garten to name but a few. Grantown-On-Spey is three miles from Cromdale which has all local amenities, bars, hotels and restaurants. Grantown also has a lovely 18 hole golf course through beautiful woodland. The holiday resort of Aviemore is just 15 miles away and the Cairngorm Mountain Range is 25 miles which is home to Scotland's only Funicular Railway. This is a unique visitor experience that allows people to reach the top station where the Ptarmigan Restaurant is located with panoramic views from over 3,500 ft. The Highland Folk Museum in Newtonmore is located over 2 complementary areas, exhibiting different aspects of the life of a Highlander over the past 300 years. You can wander through houses, crofts and even amongst animals. To all visitors this is an experience that will enrich your life.

Then there is the famous Malt Whisky Trail Of Speyside, you'll find more than half of Scotlands Malt Whisky Distilleries, each with its own warm welcome and an invitation to see, smell, taste and absorb the magic of Whisky.

Spirit Of Speyside Whisky Festival 27th April - 1st May 2017.

The Speyside Way~ Starting at Buckie on the Moray coastline, The Speyside Way follows the course of the mighty River Spey up to Aviemore in the Cairngorms. As it reaches Cromdale the Way passes the door of Milton Cottage where you can pick up the trail if only to walk to Grantown-On-Spey through breathtaking scenery and woodland.

Milton Cottage sits within the battle ground of the Historic Battle Of Cromdale 1690 which was the final battle fought on the British Mainland in support of the first Jacobite Rising. The Battle Of Cromdale has been immortalised by the Pipe tune "The Haughs Of Cromdale"

There are fantastic walks on your doorstep while staying at Milton Cottage. The minor Haugh Road that passes Milton's drive gives you easy access to The Cromdale Hills where you can walk through Lethendry Farm to view the remains of Lethendry Castle and continue on up to The Viewpoint. Speyside stretches out before you here towards Grantown-On-Spey. Carry on up the Cromdale hills where you will find the Pipers Stone, this is where a Jacobite Piper stood during The Battle of Cromdale, playing tunes to urge his men on until he finally expired. Then to the summit where you will reach the Cairn that can be seen from the panoramic views at Milton Cottage.

Lovely cottage

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was warm, well appointed, cosy and clean and in a lovely setting with chickens and sheep. Bedding and towels were provided and of a good quality. Lovely to have a coal fire. Dogs are allowed (water bowl and pooh bags provided) but laminate flooring so dogs need to be able to cope with it. Also dogs not allowed in the bedrooms, so fine as long as your dog is happy to sleep away from you.

Only minor gripe is that the pre-visit info from the website described a welcome pack of fresh milk, bread, eggs, bacon etc . We stayed for a weekend and only got a packet of shortbread, so assume the welcome pack doesn't apply to weekend visitors. This is not stated in the info sent to you, so take what you need with you!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, I am pleased that you found the Cottage to be clean and cosy and enjoyed the setting that Milton sits in. Unfortunately due to the cost for the Full Welcome pack this is not included in your rental unless staying for 3 or more nights, this information is on the site alongside the rental rates and minimum stay policy. I do welcome dogs and all I ask is that the dogs stay out of the bedrooms due to unfortunately experiencing some irresponsible owners that have allowed their dogs to sleep in the beds resulting in bedding having to be replaced. Thank you again for your review, Best Wishes Nicola

Utterly Fantastic! Would highly, highly recommend!

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful cottage in a fantastic part of the world, made extremely special by the wonderful hosts; Andy & Nicky, along with their great garden and animals. Our hosts made us feel very welcome and provided amazing facilities for myself and my family. Our little one is only 7 months and it was like home away from home for her! She was brilliantly catered for with a big cot, toys and games, swings, child carrier back-packs ... you name it! I am eternally grateful for everything that was provided and I look forward to booking again next year!

Thank you all so much

Cosy cottage

  • 5 of 5

A lovely cosy cottage. Very comfortable and well equipped. Also very private despite being attached to the owners house.

Would definitely recommend it.

Need a car but a great quiet cycle on back roads to Grantown on Spey for pubs/shops/restaurants

Ideal cottage for Cairngorm & beyond

  • 5 of 5

This was the first time we had chosen a cottage attached to the owner's property but we had no need for concern.

The welcome package was much more than we had expected and our hosts could not have been better.

A perfect location for visiting the Cairngorm National Park, Aviemore to the south, Findhorn to the east and as far north as Dornoch, all within easy driving distance.

Also discovered a multitude of pathways to walk either through local forest or along the river Spey.

All in all the perfect location, cottage and host for a wonderful holiday

Excellent location and a lovely cottage.

  • 5 of 5

I booked Milton Cottage for a week long holiday with my 2 children. The cottage itself was immaculate, clean and tidy with a huge garden that the kids enjoyed playing in. We used this as a base for day trips during the day, with Grantown on Spey, Aviemore, the Cairngorms and Inverness all within reach. I would recommend this cottage to anyone looking for very comfortable countryside accommodation.

Cozy Cottage in Cromdale

  • 5 of 5

My family and I recently stayed at Milton Cottage for a week. The cottage is perfect! Comfortable beds, fully equipped kitchen and a wonderful fireplace. It was exactly the break we needed after a month of city travel. Nicky and Andy were great hosts. Nicky gave us the tour Saturday evening and provided us with the essentials for breakfast on Sunday morning (farm fresh eggs, bread, milk ect). The town of Grantown On Spey is a 5 minute car ride away or a lovely 1.5 hour walk through the forest trail (recommended) where you can pick up everything you need. The kids (12 & 10) loved it and didn't want to leave. They couldn't wait to get up in the morning to see the lambs, chickens, rabbits, Tam the dog and Bonnie the beautiful Highland Cow. Again, Nicky and Andy were great with the kids, showing them and talking to them about the different animals. It was wonderful to see their faces when they were with the animals. Coal is provided for the fire and as a Canadian (Southern Ontario) I can say I have never done this before. It took a little work and a few tips from Andy but once it was going, the fire was awesome. By day 3 I was a pro and we enjoyed a movie or a board game in front of the fire every night! I could go on but I think by now you get the point. Our only downside was that we didn't have a car. I would recommend one as the bus schedule from Cromdale isn't the best. That didn't stop us from having a great week! I would highly recommend Milton cottage to anyone! Thank you Nicky and Andy for your great hospitality! Hopefully we will be back......
