Why Steven BENN chose Lakes Peninsula

The cottage boasts an excellent location in the picturesque, medieval village of Cartmel. There are beautiful views from the front overlooking parkland, woods and the race course. It is 2 minutes walk from the village square and all the amenities. The acclaimed 2 Michelin starred restaurant, l'enclume, can be accessed through a narrow passage way, with the Cavendish arms on the way. Cartmel has many watering holes for a small village, no need to use the car to find variety. If needing exercise as part of you holiday, there are many walks right from the doorstep. The appeal of Cartmel is wide, the beauty, the history, the tranquility, the food, did I mention Sticky Toffee Pudding? I was born and grew up in the village and after many years away, was drawn back to the unique charm of the place. Before moving back permanently, I stayed in a few holiday cottages in the area and began to get ideas about how I would present my own holiday cottage.I was lucky to find Racecourse cottage for sale and although it was in need of complete renovation, there was a nice feel to it. A beautiful cottage in a beautiful village. In the words of Chris Evans, Cartmel is a "thimbleful of diamonds".

Quality with no corners cut and the welcome pack, we thought these were a thing of the past.

  • 5 of 5

It was just perfect for all of us and very impressive. That is the opinion of all of us not just me and of course the girls Ladies over 60) were taken with the tasteful decor. We brought home more than we have ever done as not even logs to buy for the fire. Brilliant! However we would like to keep this our secret as we do not want it becoming to popular. We are considering a repeat visit in late October if diaries of everyone can do this. Many many thanks.

Owner's Response: Wow, thank you so much! There is a lot of competition out there and we never take our guests for granted. I still feel the same need to please as we did with our very first visitors. We will be more than happy to welcome you again. Wishing you all the best, Steven

Excellent property, comfortable beds, fully equipped kitchen.

  • 5 of 5

Both the property and location were perfect for our holiday. Cartmel village is a little gem, pubs and coffee shop in easy walking distance and lovely longer walks in the surrounding area. The lakes were within easy reach by car.

Owner's Response: Dear Susan, Thank you so much for your review, I am really pleased that you enjoyed your stay in Racecourse cottage. We are very lucky with the location of the cottage, everything in Cartmel is within a short distance of the front door. There are many walks from Cartmel and it sounds like you tried a few. I hope there are still a few left to tempt you to visit Cartmel again. Best wishes, Steven

Wonderful and relaxing break

  • 5 of 5

Having just returned from spending 4 days relaxing in Cartmel at Racecourse Cottage, each of the 3 couples who where there and have spent holidays in many places all agree that the cottage surpassed anywhere else we have stayed.

The cottage was superbly fitted with absolutely nothing left to chance, the lovely welcome pack was very much appreciated and was put together with the same care and attention to detail as to the fixtures and fittings of the property.

Thanks to Steven for the means for a relaxing and enjoyable stay and we would all thoroughly recommend the cottage as somewhere to relax.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the fantastic review. We have never had a holiday rental cottage before but have refurbished many properties. We took the same care and attention as we would for ourselves, using quality fixtures and fittings. Being in the Lake District, we cannot always guarantee good weather, so we made sure the cottage was a nice place to rest in not just a base. The welcome pack is to make sure our guests have something when they arrive to kick start the holiday! It makes me very happy to know that our visitors have enjoyed there time out in Racecourse cottage.

We didn't want to leave!

  • 5 of 5

We were a party of 5 adults staying in Cartmel for the races and we couldn't have had a better property in terms of location and luxury. The layout worked well for us with a shower room or bathroom for each bedroom. A superb kitchen, social living and dining space with quality fixtures and fittings and all spotlessly clean. Beautifully co-ordinated decor and soft furnishings too. The weather was a bonus and we were able to have breakfast outside - perfect. The owners are so helpful with excellent communication from Steven. We were so delighted with the cottage and surrounding area we have already booked for next year.

Owner's Response: Dear Carol, thank you so much for your glowing review. We can't always guarantee the weather but we have tried very hard to make sure our cottage meets with your expectations. We are very lucky with the location, lovely views over the parkland, racecourse and yet near to the pubs and restaurants. With careful planning we managed to make sure each bedroom had a bathroom. We decided to go a bit bolder with the decor and used fixtures and fittings we would use in our own house. I am delighted that the extra mile we went to has been appreciated.

Owner's Response: This was your 5th visit with your family to Cartmel at Easter, but your first time staying with us. I am so pleased you liked it and will be coming back in the future. Kind regards, Steven

Activity and Interests

Travel:

Cartmel is 20 minutes from J36 of the M6 Motorway. Grange over Sands railway station is 2 miles away. London is less than 3 hours away and Manchester 90 minutes both by train. Although Cartmel itself is easy to explore on foot, we do recommend a car for travel further afield and to take full advantage of the Lake District.

Distances:

Grange over Sands 2 miles, Windermere 5 miles

Further Details:

Cartmel Village is built around the 12th Century Priory and is home to Simon Rogan's award winning 2 Michelin star restaurant, L'Enclume and it's sister restaurant, Rogan's. It is also home to the famous Sticky Toffee Pudding shop. With five pubs selling real ales and serving good food, Cartmel is fast becoming a food destination. There is a small convenience food shop and Grange over Sands, a mere 5 minute drive away, has a supermarket, award winning Higginson's Butchers, Fletcher's fruit and vegetable shop, 2 excellent bakeries and various Banks and Cashpoints.
