Villa With Private Pool Situated In One Of The Sunniest And Most Beautiful Areas

Updated: 03-Sep-2016
Villa in Fontaine Chalendray Nr. Aulnay de Saintonge, Charente Maritime, Poitou-Charentes, France - Spacious Villa Set In A Small Hamlet Yet Close To Towns With All Amenities And 75 Mins From Beach

Welcome to La Maison Dans la Vallée, a well maintained villa set in a secure courtyard with private swimming pool and games barn. Step outside and explore a region of bright fields of sunflowers and rows of vinyards (most of which cater towards the local delicacy, Pineau), not to mention the melons and woodlands, however a short cycle on the bikes provided will land you in Néré were you can relax in the shade, sipping the local wine at the bar or enjoy the tennis courts and fishing reservoir. Further afield, at fifteen minutes by car you will find the bustling market towns of Aulnay de Saintonge and Matha where an abundance of restaurants, bars, boulangeries and supermarkets await you. Next stop is the historic town of St Jean d'Angely, just 30 mins away which has a large pleasure lake, aquatic activity center, large markets and many restaurants. Around an hours drive from the villa gives you a large choice of reknowned cities and towns to visit, inluding Saintes, Cognac, Angouleme, Royan and La Rochelle. Outdoor activities include kayaking, cycling, fishing, golf and of course walking. In this region it's safe to say that you won't be short of delights to enjoy, such as the aforementioned pineau, local wines, the world famous cognac, local cheeses and meats, fresh fruit, seafood, and of course plenty of brocantes to browse around. In the summer, make sure to keep an eye out for local festivals of all varieties, including music festivals, agricultural celebrations and the french take on boxcar racing, involving old mopeds and a lot of cognac.

Guestbook comments from the owner

It has to be said that on arrival you feel a sense of relief as this property is obviously well cared for unlike some other experiences we have had with house rentals in this region. Everything was provided for. The pool was fantastic, completely enclosed and private. And then there was the outdoor pizza oven! This is a unique gem which became the center-point for at least 2 of our evenings. We opted to stay a little more inland than usual this time, and as the owners said, a car is needed to make the most of this area, however all things considered its a small sacrifice which allowed us to get the kids out to the beach for day trips, while remaining close to our friends who were staying in the beautiful town Cognac. We definitely recommend this to anyone looking to discover this area of France. Were looking forward to returning even if just for the peneau. -Barry and Karyn, Belfast.

Beautiful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

A massive thank you to Declan for making our stay a wonderfully relaxing 2 weeks. The house, pool area and games room were perfect for us and our 3 children. All the areas were well maintained, clean and welcoming. We were supplied with lots of towels and a change of bedding. Declan came to clean the pool every few days and was great at suggesting places for us to try. The house is set in a peaceful location with amenities being a short drive away, we found it perfectly located and visited a nearby lake and then went further afield to La Rochelle il de re and Angouleme ( a must for beautiful French chocolates!) We all loved spending time relaxing at the house either by the pool or on one of the areas set up outside for dining. The fridge was very very well stocked for our arrival with food for the evening and wine to get us into the French holiday mood! Perfect hosts of a perfect house in a perfect location. Thank you Declan and Rosemary

Perfect Property, Perfect Location, Perfect Hosts

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a suitable property to accommodate all of us. With four active boys in tow the options can be somewhat restricted. But this was absolutely perfect! Having a pool and games room on site was a massive bonus, as was the wifi (no child likes to stray too far from a good signal nowadays!) Being fairly secluded too we could properly relax and just let the kids do what they wanted. We also made good use of the bikes generously provided.

The house itself was far better than we expected, the photos here really don't do it justice. Plenty of living space, comfy lounge and great kitchen. There are two patio areas so you can choose to eat outside and get the best of the sun. Having two bathrooms with showers is very handy too.

The location is great, being just an hour or so from the coast and La Rochelle or any number of other towns like Cognac, Angouleme and Saintes. There was plenty for us to see and do the entire two week stay.

We couldn't have asked for better hosts either. Arriving fairly late at night to be greeted with a fully stocked fridge was a great start to the holiday after a long drive! Very accommodating, friendly and welcoming. Nothing ever seemed like too much trouble and they were very helpful with recommendations of local attractions and places to eat and drink.

We would recommend this to anyone with a family, whether they're young children or teenagers they'll love this place.

Fabulous place to stay

  • 5 of 5

A big thanks to the owners for making us feel so welcome. It was a real home from home. The house had all that we needed for a great 2 weeks stay. The pool was fabulous and so was the accommodation. The real bonus was the games room which is housed in the barn. This was a real gem and kept our teenager entertained for hours!!!! As well as the games there was also an area where we could all sit and relax. There were also bikes for us all to use. A real must for anyone to eat at is Bistrot St Pierrre at nearby Nere. Lovely food and friendly service.

Activity and Interests

The Atlantic coast lies just over an hours drive away with its expansive beaches and ocean. We suggest taking a trip to La Rochelle to experience the old port town that has retained all its charm from generations past. As you follow the coast south, you will find the picturesque beaches of Chatelaillon-plage and Fouras. A detour to the Ile D'oleron is strongly recommended before admiring the charm of the fascinatingly authentic oyster fishing town of La Tremblade.

Being situated in a rural region, a car is a must have to fully take advantage of this beautiful home, and rental companies can be found at all airports or nearby at Aulnay (15 minute drive).

Airports:La Rochelle (90km to west), Poitiers (95km to north east), Bordeaux (187km to south) and Nantes (230km to north).

Train Stations: St Jean D'angely (30 km to west), Saintes (50km to south west), Angouleme (53km to south east).

Ferry: Cherbourg/Roscoff (570km to north).

We are just 40 minutes from the lovely town of Cognac with its major Cognac houses and many wonderful restaurants to sample. Slightly closer is the historic town of Saintes with its Roman Amphitheatre, markets, nightlife, bars and restaurants. Angouleme, a fortified city built high on the ramparts and dominating the Charente is a must see and is approximately one hour away by car. Futuroscope and the Marais Poitevin - known as 'Green Venice' of Poitou-Charentes are slightly further afield.

Further Details:

Daily Markets are a short drive away everyday of the week in various surrounding town and cities. Here you'll find everything from fresh fruit to antiques and everything in between including farmhouse cheeses and pineau. Supermarkets 15 minutes away which stock all your domestic needs. Cognac Blues Passion is a brilliant open air music event held annually around the first week of July. Acts of 2012 included Tom Jones, Sting, Hugh Laurie and The Cranberries.
