About Janis Cauthery

Piers and Janis live in Wilmcote a village near Stratford Upon Avon, in the UK.

They purchased the property in January 2014.

They fell in love with Tuscany on a visit in 2013 and decided to search for a property where they could spend time with their family and friends. They were lucky to find Casa Colomba . It is in the delightful hilltop village of Orciatico, which is peaceful and unspoilt . It is great for walking and bird watching and is well located for touring around Tuscany.Ideal base to stay for the concert of Andrea Bocelli at The Teatro el Silenzio. The concert can be seen from the house.

Since purchasing the property , they have installed a complete new damp course, fitted fly screens and decorated inside and out. We have had a new driveway built so access and parking is easier. There is now space for 3 car. For 2017 there will be a swimming pool.

Janis Cauthery purchased this house in 2014

Why Janis Cauthery chose Pisa area

We love Tuscany. The lifestyle, the food, the landscape and the wonderful places to visit .

The location is so peaceful with the most spectacular views. There are so many places to explore and the location is ideally suited for peace and quiet with easy access to the more traditional tourist towns and cities. There are also some lovely little medieval towns within a short drive . There are wonderful walks through the woods directly from the cottage gates.

What makes this house unique

The location is unique .Peaceful yet a short walk to the village .Wonderful woodland walks that go on for miles. The Astronomical Observatory is just up the hill see their website . http://www.astronomicalcentre.org/

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a fantastic time. Thank you so much. We loved the house and it was really lovely to have the books and music to enjoy too. The family who owned the local restaurant were so good to us. The weather was very hot and we did visit the beach as a break from touring the beautiful towns. We managed to use the pool in Agriturismo Signorini which is on the road out of Orciatico towards Volterra about 3 or 4 km from the house. They charged us 5 euros per person and have a lovely pool and loungers. They said that they would welcome other visitors to the house. there are details in the house. We had a lovely lunch there but you need to telephone in advance and tell them if you would like to eat there.

The weather was blissful. Views from the house are stunning a panorama across a deep green valley dotted with hints of small villages in the distance. The house is at the top of Orciatico and as such feels both cut off whilst having access to the local village amenities. Walks up the hill take you to the forest littered with wonderful scenery : a few fascinating windmills, a fascinating abandoned house and a chorus of frogs at the top. Each morning we awoke to birdsong and a view from our balcony of the mist breaking and separating across the valley and the hills . The house is beautiful and has a lovely feel . We are looking forward to returning.

We enjoyed a relaxing stay in this comfortable home. The central heating system works well. Italy enthrals as ever our last day in the peaceful sun here on the balcony was a real treat .

Thank you for a wonderful stay . The house was lovely , the views in particular were stunning. It was a perfect location for visiting the main cities. I would certainly recommend Casa Colomba to family and friends

Guests in 2014 from England and Australia .

Having sent a week here we are very reluctant to be going home.Every day starts with spectacular views and weather permitting ends with wonderful sunsets. The walk up the hill is well worth it.

One week is not enough in this idyllic setting. The village restaurant is fantastic 20 euros for 4 courses. House is well furnished. Our way home from the village was lit up by fire flies.

Gorgeous house with a stunning view

  • 5 of 5

This really was a brilliant place to stay. The house was spacious with all the amenities you could hope for: the bedrooms were very comfortable and the sitting room excellently appointed (and the shower had excellent water pressure, which is important to me!).

The location perfect. Perched at the top of a forested hill overlooking gorgeous scenery, it was a short walk to a national observatory. We had dinner in Nello's in Lajatico on our second night and can't recommend it enough. The house is ideally situated for exploring Siena, Pisa and Florence - can't wait to stay longer next time!

Beautiful holiday in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

Casa Colomba was perfect for a writing holiday. The surrounding areas, the hilltop village of Orciatico and the astronomical centre made for lovely walks. Perfect views and within driving distance of Siena and Florence for day trips. The house itself was comfortable and well stocked with books and DVDs and a lovely kitchen. There is also a terrace looking over the hill; excellent for eating, writing and conversations.

Fantastically located, peaceful house in the hills

  • 5 of 5

Such a wonderful house in an amazing location. Up in the hills with great views across the surrounding area. We had a great meal in a local town which was crazy cheap, unpretentious and delicious. Good place to stay to travel to Sienna, Voltaire and Florence. Very quiet with lovely walks in the surrounding forest and up to the Astrological viewpoint.

Wonderful art filled stay in Tuscan hills

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful house at the top of a quintessential Italian village, with spectacular views of the Tuscan hills. Wonderful walks from the house through the woods, up into the hills and to the local observatory.

We spent a few very happy days in the house, including road trips to nearby towns and cities. Volterra, Pisa, San Giamanno and Sienna are all near enough for day trips, meaning a rich history of art and architecture, specifically a wide array of Renaissance masterpieces, are on your door step. A broad range of restaurants to suit the tastes of any foody. Looking forward to returning for more adventures.

Idyllic hill top location with stunning views

Clean and well equipped property (with everything that you could possibly need, from beach bags to sun parasols) located on the edge of a pretty village. The real star is the magnificent views, that are simply breath taking. The property is a good base for larger trips to Pisa, for example, although we preferred visiting other local hill top towns such as Volterra and Lari.

The property easily sleeps 6 people, but could sleep 8. There were two bathrooms, one with a shower and the other with a (very small!) bath. There were plenty of bedding and towels, including beach towels.

Phillipo, who met us with the keys on arrival, was very friendly and seemed helpful should we have needed anything. However, everything was great, so we just saw him at the end of the two weeks to hand the keys back!

Janis, the owner, indicated that they intend to add a pool next year. This will be a great addition to the property.

Wonderful week at Casa Colomba

  • 5 of 5

Casa Colomba is a beautiful house in an amazing location. The house has been renovated to an excellent standard and is packed with character and charm. The view from the house is just breath taking, absolutely gorgeous.

Orciatico is just what we imagined a small Italian village to be. Again packed with character.

My wife and I along with our two teenage daughters had a holiday we will remember for ever. Tuscany is a lovely part of the world and we visited some beautiful places, Florence, the tower of Pisa, Lucca, San Gimignano and Volterra.

Our only comments would be, unless you are better at navigating than us, try and make sure that you travel from the airport to the house in the day light. We found navigating the hill side roads a little challenging after a long days travel. Also, as the village is quite remote, touring Tuscany takes a little longer than we expected. However, with a little patience, getting around is fine
