About Janis Cauthery

Piers and Janis live in Wilmcote a village near Stratford Upon Avon, in the UK.

They purchased the property in January 2014.

They fell in love with Tuscany on a visit in 2013 and decided to search for a property where they could spend time with their family and friends. They were lucky to find Casa Colomba . It is in the delightful hilltop village of Orciatico, which is peaceful and unspoilt . It is great for walking and bird watching and is well located for touring around Tuscany.Ideal base to stay for the concert of Andrea Bocelli at The Teatro el Silenzio. The concert can be seen from the house.

Since purchasing the property , they have installed a complete new damp course, fitted fly screens and decorated inside and out. We have had a new driveway built so access and parking is easier. There is now space for 3 car. For 2017 there will be a swimming pool.

Janis Cauthery purchased this house in 2014

Why Janis Cauthery chose Valdera e Colline Pisane

We love Tuscany. The lifestyle, the food, the landscape and the wonderful places to visit .

The location is so peaceful with the most spectacular views. There are so many places to explore and the location is ideally suited for peace and quiet with easy access to the more traditional tourist towns and cities. There are also some lovely little medieval towns within a short drive . There are wonderful walks through the woods directly from the cottage gates.

What makes this house unique

The location is unique .Peaceful yet a short walk to the village .Wonderful woodland walks that go on for miles. The Astronomical Observatory is just up the hill see their website . http://www.astronomicalcentre.org/

We had a fantastic time. Thank you so much. We loved the house and it was really lovely to have the books and music to enjoy too. The family who owned the local restaurant were so good to us. The weather was very hot and we did visit the beach as a break from touring the beautiful towns. We managed to use the pool in Agriturismo Signorini which is on the road out of Orciatico towards Volterra about 3 or 4 km from the house. They charged us 5 euros per person and have a lovely pool and loungers. They said that they would welcome other visitors to the house. there are details in the house. We had a lovely lunch there but you need to telephone in advance and tell them if you would like to eat there.

The weather was blissful. Views from the house are stunning a panorama across a deep green valley dotted with hints of small villages in the distance. The house is at the top of Orciatico and as such feels both cut off whilst having access to the local village amenities. Walks up the hill take you to the forest littered with wonderful scenery : a few fascinating windmills, a fascinating abandoned house and a chorus of frogs at the top. Each morning we awoke to birdsong and a view from our balcony of the mist breaking and separating across the valley and the hills . The house is beautiful and has a lovely feel . We are looking forward to returning.

March 2014

We enjoyed a relaxing stay in this comfortable home. The central heating system works well. Italy enthrals as ever our last day in the peaceful sun here on the balcony was a real treat .

Thank you for a wonderful stay . The house was lovely , the views in particular were stunning. It was a perfect location for visiting the main cities. I would certainly recommend Casa Colomba to family and friends

Guests in 2014 from England and Australia .

Having sent a week here we are very reluctant to be going home.Every day starts with spectacular views and weather permitting ends with wonderful sunsets. The walk up the hill is well worth it.

Audrey and family June 2014

One week is not enough in this idyllic setting. The village restaurant is fantastic 20 euros for 4 courses. House is well furnished. Our way home from the village was lit up by fire flies.

Our family had a great holiday in Casa Colomba.

The location is perfect (with 3 bedrooms, fully equipped kitchen) and has a great view. The new private pool is cleaned every day.

Thank you Janis, for these relaxing weeks in your house in Tuscany!

A Tuscan Delight - central, accessible

  • 5 of 5

Did you say “ORCIATICO“? Shhhh. “Orciatico". That's better. Don't tell the world. You won't find it in many guide books. The perfect place to go out from in the morning and come back to in the evening. So why am I telling you? It's what you do when you are in love. And everyone can't come here.

Janis and Piers have thought of everything you might need to make your stay a success – and then some more - even walking poles and binoculars. So let me tell about our time in Orciatico in September : It’s early morning; I am the only one up …

Listen. What do you hear? Nothing. That's it. Silence. Beautiful silence. Broken only by the occasional burr of a farmer’s saw or the distant dog who barks at 4pm each day. Usually one bark starts another across the valley, but in the hot Tuscan sun, they can't be bothered.

Go into the garden below the yellow stone walls of the old house and pick a fig, olive or pomegranate or even the largest conker you ever had. Admire the yellow autumn crocuses under the olive trees.

Listen to the birds. Hear the wind in the trees. Look for the red squirrel with the bushiest tail. Spot a fox or porcupine – yes! - at the roadside as you return from a restaurant in the evening.

Walk up the road into the forest and see the wild flowers – orchids, purple colchicum and yellow crocuses. Visit the ancient windmill ruins or the astronomical observatory. Follow the winding path back through the woods.

If the day is hot, cool off in the blue pool - as one of our party did one morning. He didn't intend to and had all his clothes on at the time. He survived; a pity about his iPhone.

Wander down to the village bar. Watch the ladies playing ‘Briscola’ with 40 strange and familiar cards. Buy a litre of local Chianti for 4E. Listen to the crickets as dusk falls. See the lights of the distant villages and even perhaps Pisa in the distance. Wonder at the billions of stars appearing in the evening sky. Re-introduce yourself to the Milky Way and show your children that it is not a chocolate bar.

Get up early and sit on the balcony as the leaves rustle in the breeze and the morning sun rises over the Mediterranean poplars in the east. Watch the changing patterns as the mist lifts from the patchwork quilt of fields in the valley below. See a plume of smoke rising lazily from a wood fire. It can't be bothered to go all the way up. Reaches 100 ft and then heads off towards Pisa.

This is Italy, Tuscany, Orciatico, Casa Columba. We loved it: So will you.

A beautiful piece of Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

Excellent family holiday villa. Very well equipped and maintained. The local agent (Filippo) and neighbour Gian Carlo are always on hand to help and super friendly. Unrivalled views and central enough to visit all the beautiful cities such Pisa, Siena, Volterra, Florence and Lucca. Highly recommended.

Superb property with exceptional views!

  • 5 of 5

We (2 adults & 2 kids; 4 & 7) stayed at this property during May half-term and weren't disappointed at all. The house is perfectly positioned; an hour or so drive from Pisa through Tuscan hills and gorgeous towns & villages and sits high up on a hill with some of the best views I've ever seen. On a clear day and with the help of some binoculars you can even make out the leaning tower of Pisa.

The house has a lovely rustic feel and is a good size with plenty of room downstairs with 3 good sized bedrooms upstairs plus, 2 bathrooms. It slept 4 easily and would have no problem getting another 2 in. Likewise there is ample space outside with a gorgeous pool area and a built in BBQ. If you're looking for plenty of glass, marble and mirrors then this house isn't for you but then probably neither is Tuscany.

Whilst this house is open to rent it's obvious the owners put their love in to it. The garden is well maintained with lots of lovely flowers, the pool area is immaculate and the house has everything you need with lots of the 'basics' in the kitchen making it far more homely and straightforward when it comes to shopping.

The closest town - Lajatico - is where Andrea Bocelli is from and you can feel his influence locally and further afield. There are several other picturesque towns all within an hours drive and the beach is reachable too (also an hour or so) if you get bored of the pool.

All in all, for us, this was a great spot for a lovely week away during half-term. The kids loved the pool, the food and wine is great without paying tourist prices and there was lots of places to go.

Highly recommended.
