Former Farmhouse near Festalemps, Dordogne - Secure River And Lake Swimming, Canoeing And Golf Are In Easy Driving Distance

Entering the house from the courtyard, you’ll find a spacious entrance hall with turned staircase and a toilet/wash-room. On the left is the kitchen/sitting room and on the right is the dining/sitting room. The kitchen/sitting room is a large open plan space with a working fireplace, dining table, 2 sofas, armchairs, TV, DVD player with collection of films, CDs, books and board games. The back door in the kitchen opens into a walled terrace with a picnic table. At the end of the terrace is the utility room with a washing machine. Upstairs there are 4 bedrooms, one with en-suite shower room and toilet, and a family bathroom. There is no swimming pool on the premises, but there are excellent swimming facilities nearby:- in the river Dronne at St Aulaye and Aubeterre and the Grand Etang at la Jemaye.

We are an Anglo/French couple who live in Southern England.

The house is close by where my wife was born and where many of her family members still live.

We bought the house a few years ago mainly for the use of ourselves, family and friends. This still leaves many weeks in the year when the house is available for other guests.

We rented the property for just under a week, and were travelling to the region for a wedding. The proximity for the wedding location in Saint Privat-des-Pres was fantastic. Property is full of French charm, big grounds for children to run around in, and good facilities. Would highly recommend.

Great place for a family holiay away from it all

Great place and location. Loved the space and garden. We were a group of two families and there was enough space for everyone. The kids loved the garden and the fruit trees - plenty of baking went on. The clear skies and no street lamps gave us a great view of the stars whilst sitting out in the evening. The local area has great places to visit - markets, canoeing, swimming in the lake, walking in the forest. A fab place to get away to and explore rural France.

Perfect family holiday

We stayed here with our two children (7 and 4) and friends. The house and gardens are lovely - the kids particularly loved the lizards and bats, and we made the most of the numerous fruit trees (many fruit tarts were consumed). With nearby swimming at la Grand Jemaye, and shopping at Riberac (including the amazing Friday market), it's a great base for a family holiday.

The perfect holiday

Over the past few years, my partner, our children (now 2 and 4) and I have stayed at this house in Fonteau a number of times. It is in a very peaceful location, on the edge of a small hamlet, surrounded by agricultural land. The house is very roomy with a lovely kitchen/sitting room and 4 spacious bedrooms, with all necessary facilities. Outside, the 2+ acres of well maintained land make a fine playground for the boys and it's wonderful having so many fruit trees.

Most days we head down to the nearby river and lake swimming spots - safe, picturesque, with cafes and other facilities - ideal for cooling down on a hot summer’s day.

The Perigordian towns and villages in the area are well worth exploring. Amongst our favourite touristy excursions are the charming hill town of Aubeterre with its amazing church carved out of a rocky cliff face, the Romanesque and fortified churches and the famous Friday market in Riberac.

Riberac 2014

We rented this property for a month. On arrival we were pleasantly surprised at the overall scale of the property, both inside and out. The rooms were very spacious & clean, the kitchen was well appointed and easy to use and the outside space was amazing. We had two young boys with us and the owner had left a number of toys and games for us to use both inside and outside. The location of the property is ideal, with a choice of beaches and other child activities within 15 minutes we were never short of things to do. The renowned market at Riberac is only 10 minutes away where it is possible to find just about everything.

The owner & his wife were extremely friendly & helpful right from our first enquiry, and we shall certainly be returning here again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in the Dordogne.

Beaches with lifeguards, other facilities and children's play areas are on the river Dronne at Saint Aulaye (10 kms) and Aubeterre (8 kms). Particularly popular is the Grand Etang (big lake) at La Jemaye (7 kms).

Travel:

Airports at Bordeaux and Bergerac. Use of a car is essential.

Saint-Privat-des-Prés – pretty Perigordian village with a fortified Romanesque church and well stocked grocery shop.

Aubeterre – Pretty town just over the Departmental border in Charente

Les Eyzies – the so called “prehistoric capital of the world” with its world renowned Cro Magnon cave paintings.

Bordeaux – If you get the urge to do some serious shopping, is the largest major city in the area.

Seaside – The magnificent, pine lined Atlantic beaches west of Bordeaux are 120 kms away (Royan).

Hunting – in season and with appropriate permits – e.g. wild boar (sanglier) in the nearby forest of La Double.

Canoe/kayak on the Dronne from Aubeterre, Riberac and other locations.

Crane Migration

Every autumn (mid-October) and spring (early March) you can witness the spectacle of flocks of cranes (grues) migrating to and from summer and winter residences. The vast V shaped squadrons of these large birds follow established routes in full view of the house. You do not need to stare into the sky for hours on end because their distinctive calls will alert you to their passing. Sometimes you will see the squadrons break up into apparent disarray as they detect rising warm air (thermals) which they use to increase their altitude, before reforming and continuing their flight.

  • Notes on accommodation: A dongle is supplied for internet access, email and telephone via Skype. Outside: Outside are a barn, pigeonnier, and other outbuildings which form a secluded courtyard. There are walnut trees and fruit trees including cherry, peach, pear, plum and fig. Feel free to pick whatever is ripe at the time of your stay. Utility Room: The back door of the kitchen opens into a walled terrace with a picnic table. At the end of the terrace is the utility room with the gas boiler, washing machine, barbecue and outdoor furniture. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Duvets (winter and summer quality), pillows, mattress covers, one set of bed linen and towels are provided for each bed.
