About the property

Les Arques Gites are adjacent to a small vineyard that stretches to the Canal du Midi near to the picturesque villages of Homps and Olonzac. This is a quintessentially French location in the sunny Languedoc region, within a short drive of the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean near Narbonne and the spectacular Cité of Carcassonne. The property dates back to the 1850's and the renovation has retained the traditional character of the stone barn with oak windows, doors and the original timber roof beams, combined with modern facilities to make your stay comfortable. The excellent location allows guests to abandon the car and ramble for 15mins along the Canal to Homps to enjoy the scenery & numerous restaurants or, in the opposite direction to Olonzac to experience the colourful local market, bars, restaurants, tennis courts and park. Venture further afield on cycles or in the car to explore the numerous vinyards and Cathar castles.

A 5 star gîte in a fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

Despite awful weather for the first half of our week, this gîte still managed to impress. The cold weather was more than countered by the warmth of Wendy’s welcome. Everything you might need has been thought of, the gîte is well-equipped, and Wendy, while being very unobtrusive, was always available to offer help or useful advice about the local area. The gîte is very well situated, within easy walking distance of restaurants in nearby Olonzac or along the Canal du Midi in Homps (both about a 15 minute walk away). There is also a very good baker’s just about 7- 8 minutes’ walk away. We stayed in the Minervois gîte which has a very comfortable bed, which is important to us as we both have back problems. One of the best gîtes we have ever stayed in, and one that we would thoroughly recommend.

Perfect holiday gite

  • 5 of 5

John and Wendy are fantastic, really welcoming and made us feel very at home.

The gite we stated in has great original features with lovely views over towards the canal and vineyard and beautiful garden.

Beds were amazingly comfortable and very big as well as lovely bedroom furniture with a nice window in the ceiling which was nice to have open at night. The kitchen and lounge were a good size and nice high ceilings with original beams and a good quality kitchen.

The area around the gite is quiet and calm and the pool is lovely and clean with nice seating to lounge around in, but it's only 5 mins walk to a bakery with fresh bread daily or a little further to go to homps or olonzac for some nice restaurants and bars so a perfect location.

Absolutely perfect stay and would recommend to anyone wanting to go.

Fab location, Fab Host's

  • 5 of 5

Reflecting back on our truly wonderful holiday last year. (We've been meaning to sit down and write this since then). It was June and the weather was perfect. Wendy and John really pulled out all the stops, as we thought they went above and beyond, what we'd expect from our holiday host's, in this most beautiful region of France. The Gite was just acouple of mins walk to the Lock on the Canal, which could be seen from our 1st fl Lounge window. The rooms were fresh and clean with everything we expected. There were also Bikes which we made good use of. We both hadn't rode in years, and as we were not too energetic, riding the flat tow paths were just what the doctor ordered for our leisurely afternoons out. Once at the Lock it was a sort 8 to 10 min walk into Homps with some lovely Bars and Restaurants. Many a beautiful evening was spent, lazerly sipping a glass or two of Red watching the Boats go by. During the day we'd go off exploring then finish at Wendy's well kept pool. Some evenings would start by sitting in Wendy and John's exquisitely well kept garden eating our own selection of Olives, Cheese and Wine before walking down to Homps.

Thank you both we had a fab time. We'd recomend this place to anyone.

We'll be back

Great property and location

  • 5 of 5

We returned for our third visit to Wendy and John's gites, why - because of the location , and the fact that you cannot fault the quality of the properties. If like us you have a two - centre holiday, make sure this is your final stop or you could be disappointed with your second choice. You have spotlessly clean accommodation, comfortable beds with fresh, quality linen, easy-access showers , and as much kitchen equipment as in your own home. Wendy and John have thought of everything, from mesh screens over all opening windows, games, books and bikes to borrow, guide books and maps to show you the area, even head -torches to light your way home along the Canal du Midi from a pleasant evening meal in nearby Homps. With a pleasant garden and salt water pool to cool down in after walking the vineyards and nearby hills, or simply after a gentle stroll around the morning market in Olonzac buying local produce, there is so much to enjoy at these gites.

Perle in schöner Lage mit vielen Möglichkeiten

  • 5 of 5

The golden, sandy beaches of the Mediterranean are only a 45 minute drive away, extending all the way down to the Spanish border. Nearby Narbonne and Gruissan are lively resorts and world class windsurfing and sailing is available at Leucate.

Lakeside beaches are also available at Carassonne (30 min drive) and also swimming and private windsurfing and sailing at Lac Jouarres (2 km away).

There are several airports in this region:

Carcassonne - 35mins away

Beziers - 45mins

Perpignan - 50mins

Montpellier - 90mins

Toulouse - 90mins

Nimes - 2hrs away

Girona (Spain) - 2hrs away

Car hire is essential as there is very limited public transport.

Many of you may prefer to drive and the routes from Calais or Zeebrugge take around 10 hours on an unbroken run.

Carcassonne - (30mins) Has a wonderful Disney-like fortified Medieval Cité.

Narbonne - (30mins) Another vibrant Mediterranean city, built by the Romans has a cathedral and 100 yr old market hall to buy or consume local produce.

Minerve - (15mins) A historic village built at the meeting point of two gorges.

There are several Cathar castles to be found in the Corbieres Mountains about 90 -120 minutes drive.

Further Details:

Olonzac is an easy 15min walk or short drive down a quiet country lane past the 'Cave' (call in for quality local wine). It has a beautiful park with tennis courts, several cafes, bars, restaurants, weekly market and shops including a supermarket on the edge of the town.

Homps is a relaxing 15min walk along the banks of the Canal du Midi or a short drive past the local Boulangerie at the end of our lane. Homps is the old Port du Minervois and has a number of Canal-side restaurants. Boat tours and hire are available. Continue walking through Homps and you arrive at the lake.

Lac Jouarres is a couple of minutes away by car for swimming, sailing, fishing and windsurfing. There is a lakeside restaurant making this a lovely place to spend a few hours. The walk around the lake takes about an hour.

The tow path along the Canal is also a popular cycling route and the more energetic can reach Carcassonne in under 2 hours. You can venture off the Canal into glorious hilly countryside littered with vineyards and rocky outcrops seeded with wild Rosemary and other Mediterranean plants.

We provide literature and advice on tourist attractions, popular and secret destinations, wine caves and activities to help you make the most of your time in glorious Languedoc.
