Updated: 20-Oct-2016
Gites near Olonzac/Homps, Nr. Minervois-Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - Peaceful Location, Adjacent To A Vineyard With Views Across To The Canal Du Midi

The gites are adjacent to a small vineyard that stretches to the Canal du Midi near to the picturesque village of Homps. This is a quintessentially French location in the sunny Languedoc region, within a short drive of the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean near Narbonne and the spectacular Cité of Carcassonne. The property dates back to the 1850's and the renovation has retained the traditional character of the stone barn with oak windows, doors and the original timber roof beams, combined with modern facilities to make your stay comfortable. The excellent location allows guests to abandon the car and ramble for 15mins along the Canal to Homps to enjoy the scenery & numerous restaurants or, in the opposite direction to Olonzac to experience the colourful local market, bars, restaurants, tennis courts and park. A holiday near the Canal du Midi in Languedoc

  • 5 of 5

We are just back from a holiday in Homps in the Languedoc-Roussillon region in the south of France. We stayed in Gite Corbiere which was very comfortable, clean and well-appointed. The owners, Wendy and John live next door and couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful.

The location is excellent, quiet but within easy walking distance along the canal to Homps or Olonzac. Both have excellent cafes and restaurants.

It was great to have English TV so after a day out and about exploring we could spend a relaxing evening watching a favourite programme or two.

We spent two lovely weeks here and have no hesitation in recommending a stay at Gite Corbiere.

Excellent gite 100 yds from canal

  • 5 of 5

The gite was well designed and furnished with a lovely garden and pool. The owners are very thoughtful and welcoming, and have provided bikes, table tennis and suggestions for things to do in the area. This and the nearby canal, lake and towns made for a very enjoyable holiday.

Great Gite, Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Gite Corbiere for 10 days and found it very comfortable and really well equipped both inside and out.

There is plenty of seating/loungers outside for both gites, by the good sized chlorine free pool and in the pretty garden.

We were impressed with the bikes, equally good for the road and canal path. There are two barbecues, a good selection of books, games, table tennis and plenty of information about the area.

It is perfectly situated for easy access to the canal for cycling, walking, watching the boats and for Homps and Olonzac where there is plenty of choice of cafes/restaurants.

We used the boulangerie about 5mins walk away which has a good selection of bread (especially the Viking) & cakes.

Wendy has obviously put a lot of time and thought into making a stay here most enjoyable and totally relaxing.

Total relaxation in our favourite part of France

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 10 nights in Gite Corbiere and can only say it was perfect - the property was very clean, modern and very comfortable, particularly the beds - we slept extremely well! Wendy and John were very welcoming, providing an information folder, guide books and leaflets on the local area as well as helpful advice and tips.

As the kitchen has everything you need (and due to dietary limitations) we chose to enjoy shopping in local markets and supermarkets (which are well stocked including free from items) for fresh produce and cooking meals each evening in the gite and eating al fresco on the patio overlooking the lovely garden.

The location is lovely, we regularly used the bicycles provided to cycle along the Canal du Midi, around the lake or to the local villages and markets and we often walked along the Canal in the evening watching the antics of the boat owners / hirers!

After a day’s sightseeing, we made use of the pool, played board games, table tennis, watched DVD's and English TV, all of which are provided by Wendy and John.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Gite Corbiere and have no hesitation in recommending the property.

Peaceful tranquillity in a lovely setting.

  • 5 of 5

There being just two of us, we chose to stay in the smaller gite, which proved to be perfect for our needs.

On arrival, Wendy, the owner welcomed us warmly and showed us every aspect of the immaculately-clean property. I do not think we have ever found so much provided to make one's stay comfortable. Not only was there the usual well-stocked book shelf and local guides, but table tennis was available as were bikes for those who might wish to cycle the area. The gite itself is roomy and well equipped. The bathroom is modern with a roomy walk-in shower. The bedroom has plenty of storage and the bed is most comfortable. To cap it all, satellite TV provides all the English channels one could wish for so apart from the one-hour time difference our evenings were spent as they would be at home, watching our favourite programmes. It was too early in the season to enjoy the swimming pool but we could easily assess its attractions on hot summer days. We would unhesitatingly recommend this property to anyone seeking a peaceful location for a quiet holiday with all amenities. The property is exactly as described with no disappointments in store.

The weather was kind to us for the first five days after our arrival. Our first day was spent at the excellent market in Olonzac, stocking up for our stay, followed by a gentle walk along the canal to Homs and lunch at one of the canal-side restaurants: a great way to start the holiday. We had the pleasure of the company of Wendy and a visiting friend of hers from UK for happy-hour drinks in the early evening. Wendy maintains and is adding to a delightful small garden with table and chairs, but on this occasion the sun was so hot that we were driven into the shade of the undercroft.

Thereafter, we were not short of things to occupy us: trips to places along the canal and visits to Carcasonne, the Millau Bridge and Roquefort, Narbonne and the Mediterranean coast. The weather was eventually less kind but we still found things to do. There are plenty of eating outlets at the attractive villages along the canal. Particularly charming is Le Somail but best be aware that at weekend lunchtimes the restaurants fill up pretty quickly so being 'Johnnie-come-lately' might lead to a disappointing experience as happened to us on one occasion. That aside, all-in-all we had a great eight-day break for which Wendy deserves much of the credit.

Activity and Interests

The golden, sandy beaches of the Mediterranean are only a 45 minute drive away, extending all the way down to the Spanish border. Nearby Narbonne and Gruissan are lively resorts and world class windsurfing and sailing is available at Leucate.

Lakeside beaches are also available at Carassonne (30 min drive) and also swimming and private windsurfing and sailing at Lac Jouarres (2 km away).

There are several airports in this region:

Carcassonne - 35mins away

Beziers - 45mins

Perpignan - 50mins

Montpellier - 90mins

Toulouse - 90mins

Nimes - 2hrs away

Girona (Spain) - 2hrs away

Car hire is essential as there is very limited public transport.

Many of you may prefer to drive and the routes from Calais or Zeebrugge take around 10 hours on an unbroken run.

Carcassonne - (30mins) Has a wonderful Disney-like fortified Medieval Cité.

Narbonne - (30mins) Another vibrant Mediterranean city, built by the Romans has a cathedral and 100 yr old market hall to buy or consume local produce.

Minerve - (15mins) A historic village built at the meeting point of two gorges.

There are several Cathar castles to be found in the Corbieres Mountains about 90 -120 minutes drive.

Further Details:

Olonzac is an easy 15min walk or short drive down a quiet country lane past the Cave (call in for quality local wine). It has a beautiful park with tennis courts, several cafes, bars, restaurants, weekly market and shops including a supermarket on the edge of the town.

Homps is a relaxing 15min walk along the banks of the Canal du Midi or a short drive past the local Boulangerie at the end of our lane. Homps is the old Port du Minervois and has a number of Canal-side restaurants. Boat tours and hire are available. Continue walking through Homps and you arrive at the lake.

Lac Jouarres is a couple of minutes away by car for swimming, sailing, fishing and windsurfing. There is a lakeside restaurant making this a lovely place to spend a few hours. The walk around the lake takes about an hour.

The tow path along the Canal is also a popular cycling route and the more energetic can reach Carcassonne in under 2 hours. You can venture off the Canal into glorious hilly countryside littered with vineyards and rocky outcrops seeded with wild Rosemary and other Mediterranean plants.

We can provide literature and advice on tourist attractions, popular and secret destinations, wine caves and activities to help you make the most of your time in glorious Languedoc.
