Bedrooms 5
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

House in Crowborough, Nr. Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England - Fairstowe Offers Luxury Comfort And Tranquillity

Fairstowe is an Arts and Crafts country house nestling in three acres of beautiful Edwardian gardens. It was the location for 'Christmas of my Lifetime' on BBC1 hosted by Len Goodman with 4 celebrity guests for Christmas 2014. The accommodation provides luxury and comfort in a tranquil Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a quiet, peaceful retreat ideally suited to families or friends sharing. The house is available for breaks of 7 days or more throughout the year or selected short breaks from September to May inclusive. Although situated in a peaceful private road the centre of the small market town of Crowborough is just one mile away, with it's wide choice of supermarkets and free parking. Brighton and Eastbourne can be reached by car in less than an hour and, in similar time, London Bridge by train from nearby Tunbridge Wells.

On warm summer days the heated outdoor swimming pool is very inviting, or perhaps just enjoy a glass of wine from a recliner on the south-facing terrace, overlooking the garden. You'll also be treated to the sights and sounds of the abundant local wild life. The neighbouring woodland provides a broad variety of mammals and birds entering the garden. For example greater spotted and green wood peckers, nuthatch, buzzard (overhead) and fox are frequent visitors, while sparrow hawk, muntjac deer, humming bird hawk moth are less so. A kadai (fire bowl) is useful for a barbeque and as a source of warmth when the evening gets chilly.

There are plenty of wonderful experiences to be had locally. For the more active, golf (Crowborough Beacon course, one of the most picturesque courses in the south of England), rock climbing (Evolution Climbing Lye Green or Bowles Activity Centre Eridge Green), curling (Fentons Rink Tunbridge Wells), fishing (Bewl Water Lamberhurst), off-road cycling (PORC Penshurst) as well as cycling on cycle trails and more are available. Investigation and booking ahead is advisable. Also there is, of course, a wealth of days out to be enjoyed - castles (eg Bodiam and Hever), houses (eg Batemans, Standen, Groombridge Place) and gardens (eg Pashley Manor, Great Dixter, Sissinghurst). The owners Jim and Bridget are happy to provide local advice whenever needed. Walks of various lengths, either directly from the house or after a short car journey can be recommended and a map provided. There are some stunning walks to be had either on the Ashdown Forest or through the delightful Sussex rolling hills. These can include a pub or pubs to break the journey or provide a well-deserved meal at the end.

About Bridget Hayward

Jim a retired vet and Bridget a radiographer have renovated and restored their beautiful Arts and Crafts country house and garden on the edge of the Ashdown Forest.

Why Bridget Hayward chose East Sussex

Fairstowe is a beautiful Arts and Crafts country house nestling in 3 acres of Edwardian gardens. It is tucked away in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the High Weald. It is peaceful but not remote, it lies within one mile of the centre of Crowborough on the edge of the Ashdown Forest. The area is popular with cyclists, golfers, walkers and bird watchers.

What makes this house unique

As a guest you will understand the unique benefits of this property when you swim in the heated pool, then stretch out in the warm sun on a comfortable recliner on the terrace overlooking 3 acres of well-manicured garden. Or when you look at the wooden panelling, oak floors and features of this Edwardian country house. Or when you slide under luxury linen on a superbly comfortable bed. Or on a winter's evening curl up on a cosy settee in front of the wood-burning stove to watch a film or read a book. That's before exploring all the treats provided by the local attractions, countryside and amenities.

An amazing week in an amazing house

  • 5 of 5

I booked a week at Fairstowe House for my family and I to celebrate my mother's 70th birthday.

First impressions were very impressive, in fact the photos do not do the house, or the grounds, justice. The garden in particular is beautifully kept and a joy to walk round, with its Japanese garden, croquet lawn and outdoor dining area.

As it was just outside of the summer period we paid extra to heat the pool and it was well worth it. The kids spent time every day splashing around having an amazing time. We also made full use of the other facilities including the fire pit for BBQ’s, table tennis table, trampoline and wood burner, when the evenings turned a little chilly.

The house itself is about a 15 minute walk to the nearest pub and around a 20 minute walk into town so a car is definitely recommended.

My sister in law has already started planning our next week away so I guess the whole experience was a success and that is in no small part down to this amazing house and it’s accommodating owners.

Beautiful garden, lovely home

  • 5 of 5

we enjoyed a lovely week in this home. Conveniently located for day trips to many attractions in southern England, and a comfortable home to stay in. We especially loved enjoying the garden and cooking on the Aga stove.

The owners are lovely, they even posted some clothes we managed to leave behind! Would highly recommend.

Great house for sharing with friends

  • 5 of 5

House was exactly as described and suited our needs perfectly. We were 3 separate families, all good friends, 6 adults and 6 children (8-14 yrs) and the layout of the accommodation worked brilliantly for us.

Jim kindly switched on the swimming pool to heat it up (we paid extra for this) but definitely had our monies worth the kids loved it and were in and out all day (we were there on the May spring bank holiday so naturally it was cold!).

Jim also let us check out a little later than advertised, which again helped with getting 12 people breakfasted/showered and packed.

The gardens are also huge, we played rounders and the kids ran about so plenty of room. There is a disagreeable neighbour who told us we were too noisy (playing ball games at midday on a Sunday) but we had been forewarned.

Also could maybe do with an extra DVD player in the main lounge if all wanted to watch movies.

Wifi good too which pleased the teenagers.

SO I would recommend this place with no hesitation.

A Great Holiday at Fairstowe.

  • 5 of 5

We are three generations of one family and have just spent a week at Fairstowe in early August. We all had a wonderful time at this beautiful house. The gardens were delightful, the pool was inviting, and the croquet/table tennis were good fun.We hope to visit again in the future.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review. Bridget and I are very pleased you enjoyed your stay and we hope to see you again before long. We have several projects we are excited about, involving the house and garden, that will be completed over the next few months which will enhance the experience for guests and mean that a repeat stay should be both different and improved.

Wonderful weekend at Fairstowe

  • 5 of 5

We are three generations of a family of 7 adults and 5 children aged between 2 and 12 and have just enjoyed a three night stay at Fairstowe. The house was so comfortable and had absolutely everything we needed, the kitchen was very well equipped and we did enjoy using the Aga cooker. The bedrooms were very comfortable and each enjoyed a view of the beautiful gardens and such a peaceful setting. The swimming pool was an extra bonus and enjoyed nearly all day long by most of the family. It would have been nice to have stayed longer and explored the forest and the surrounding area but we were all so comfortable and enjoying the house and gardens that only one member of the party left the property a couple of times to visit the local shop. Jim and Bridget were on hand should we need them and were most helpful. A truly memorable weekend. We hope we will be able to visit again.

Special birthday surprise with friends

  • 5 of 5

I booked a week away as a surprise for my husband's 50th birthday inviting two friends and their families also. The house provided a beautifully comfortable backdrop to a relaxing, week away. The well equipped kitchen (large fridge/freezer, Aga and conventional hob/oven) allowed us to cook some great meals. We really enjoyed using the Aga and gathering together in the living room in the evenings. The pool was clean and raised our break to a different level. The gardens kept the children occupied and when the weather was not so good the comfortable space inside meant we all (12 of us with children ranging between 5-10 years) had plenty of room. We enjoyed walks in the evening from the house into the forest. There are plenty of activities e.g Wilderness Wood, nearby. Bridget and Jim were kind, considerate and helpful. They have provided a beautiful home which gives all the comforts and more that are what makes a holiday special.
