Country House With (Summer) Heated Swimming Pool On The Edge Of Ashdown Forest

Overview

Property

Updated: 01-Dec-2016
House in Crowborough, Nr. Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England - Fairstowe Offers Luxury Comfort And Tranquillity

Fairstowe is an Arts and Crafts country house nestling in three acres of beautiful Edwardian gardens. It was the location for 'Christmas of my Lifetime' on BBC1 hosted by Len Goodman with 4 celebrity guests for Christmas 2014. The accommodation provides luxury and comfort in a tranquil Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a quiet, peaceful retreat ideally suited to families or friends sharing. The house is available for breaks of 7 days or more throughout the year or selected short breaks from September to May inclusive. Although situated in a peaceful private road the centre of the small market town of Crowborough is just one mile away, with it's wide choice of supermarkets and free parking. Brighton and Eastbourne can be reached by car in less than an hour and, in similar time, London Bridge by train from nearby Tunbridge Wells.

On warm summer days the heated outdoor swimming pool is very inviting, or perhaps just enjoy a glass of wine from a recliner on the south-facing terrace, overlooking the garden. You'll also be treated to the sights and sounds of the abundant local wild life. The neighbouring woodland provides a broad variety of mammals and birds entering the garden. For example greater spotted and green wood peckers, nuthatch, buzzard (overhead) and fox are frequent visitors, while sparrow hawk, muntjac deer, humming bird hawk moth are less so. A kadai (fire bowl) is useful for a barbeque and as a source of warmth when the evening gets chilly.

There are plenty of wonderful experiences to be had locally. For the more active, golf (Crowborough Beacon course, one of the most picturesque courses in the south of England), rock climbing (Evolution Climbing Lye Green or Bowles Activity Centre Eridge Green), curling (Fentons Rink Tunbridge Wells), fishing (Bewl Water Lamberhurst), off-road cycling (PORC Penshurst) as well as cycling on cycle trails and more are available. Investigation and booking ahead is advisable. Also there is, of course, a wealth of days out to be enjoyed - castles (eg Bodiam and Hever), houses (eg Batemans, Standen, Groombridge Place) and gardens (eg Pashley Manor, Great Dixter, Sissinghurst). The owners Jim and Bridget are happy to provide local advice whenever needed. Walks of various lengths, either directly from the house or after a short car journey can be recommended and a map provided. There are some stunning walks to be had either on the Ashdown Forest or through the delightful Sussex rolling hills. These can include a pub or pubs to break the journey or provide a well-deserved meal at the end.

About the Owner

Jim a retired vet and Bridget a radiographer have renovated and restored their beautiful Arts and Crafts country house and garden on the edge of the Ashdown Forest.

They intend to retire to run their holiday accommodation business whilst hopefully giving them some time to indulge in their passion for gardening and oil painting.

A Great Holiday at Fairstowe.

  • 5 of 5

We are three generations of one family and have just spent a week at Fairstowe in early August. We all had a wonderful time at this beautiful house. The gardens were delightful, the pool was inviting, and the croquet/table tennis were good fun.We hope to visit again in the future.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review. Bridget and I are very pleased you enjoyed your stay and we hope to see you again before long. We have several projects we are excited about, involving the house and garden, that will be completed over the next few months which will enhance the experience for guests and mean that a repeat stay should be both different and improved.

Wonderful weekend at Fairstowe

  • 5 of 5

We are three generations of a family of 7 adults and 5 children aged between 2 and 12 and have just enjoyed a three night stay at Fairstowe. The house was so comfortable and had absolutely everything we needed, the kitchen was very well equipped and we did enjoy using the Aga cooker. The bedrooms were very comfortable and each enjoyed a view of the beautiful gardens and such a peaceful setting. The swimming pool was an extra bonus and enjoyed nearly all day long by most of the family. It would have been nice to have stayed longer and explored the forest and the surrounding area but we were all so comfortable and enjoying the house and gardens that only one member of the party left the property a couple of times to visit the local shop. Jim and Bridget were on hand should we need them and were most helpful. A truly memorable weekend. We hope we will be able to visit again.

Special birthday surprise with friends

  • 5 of 5

I booked a week away as a surprise for my husband's 50th birthday inviting two friends and their families also. The house provided a beautifully comfortable backdrop to a relaxing, week away. The well equipped kitchen (large fridge/freezer, Aga and conventional hob/oven) allowed us to cook some great meals. We really enjoyed using the Aga and gathering together in the living room in the evenings. The pool was clean and raised our break to a different level. The gardens kept the children occupied and when the weather was not so good the comfortable space inside meant we all (12 of us with children ranging between 5-10 years) had plenty of room. We enjoyed walks in the evening from the house into the forest. There are plenty of activities e.g Wilderness Wood, nearby. Bridget and Jim were kind, considerate and helpful. They have provided a beautiful home which gives all the comforts and more that are what makes a holiday special.

Excellent for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 5 nights during autumn half term and had a lovely time. We were 3 generations of one family and the house worked well for us. The bedrooms are gorgeous and most have their own luxurious bathroom. The kitchen was very well fitted out and the gardens are to die for! I'd love to go back in the summer and enjoy the pool and grounds a bit more. The owners were very nice and really helpful, offering advice on walks and local pubs. It's a lovely house and full of character. The only negative (from our point of view) was that the house was almost too nice! There were beautiful ornaments and pieces of glass dotted around which were lovely but did mean that our kids were prevented from the usual games of hide and seek and murder in the dark in case anything got broken. I guess we could have moved them but we didn't like too. That said, we had a wonderful few days and would thoroughly recommend it.

Fantastic weekend stay at Fairstowe

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at Fairstowe with a group of friends for a get together. We spent a long time looking for the perfect venue, and Fairstowe fitted the bill. We were not disappointed, the pictures simply do not do this amazing house justice. Like a home away from home Fairstowe is warm, inviting and spacious. The perfect place for a retreat in the country away from it all. The grounds are huge and beautifully kept, it's clear that there has been a lot of love and care put into making this house a home.

Jim was warm and friendly, checked us in and gave us a quick tour around. He was close by when needed but completely unobtrusive.

Fantastic stay in a really impressive yet homely house.

Thank you Jim and Bridget for a weekend we will never forget!

Amazing Weekend Rental

  • 5 of 5

Twelve of us stayed at Fairstowe for the weekend for my partner’s birthday. On arrival we were greeted by Jim the friendly owner who showed us around the house and then left us to our own devices.

The house was extremely clean and well maintained. All the bedrooms are spacious with three ensuites and two other bathrooms. The lounge area is relaxing and there is ample seating around the large dining table.

The weather was lovely so we were able to enjoy two BBQs during our stay. There are two supermarkets (Waitrose and Morrison) located 5 minutes from the house which meant we were able to pop out at our own convenience to pick up supplies.

We really enjoyed our stay at Fairstowe and hope to return in the summer.... Jim and Bridget have done an amazing job on this property and their attention to small details did not go unnoticed.

Thanks again
