Swali Beach House, Sea Front Property With Private Pool On Msambweni Beach

Updated: 11-Nov-2016
House in Msambweni, South Coast, Kenya - Beautiful And Discreet House Fringed With Coconut Palms A Few Metres From The Beach

The property has 5 en-suite double bedrooms; 3 doubles and 2 twins. There are 2 bedrooms upstairs in the main house; the other 3 and the barazza bedroom are located in the cottages in the garden a few metres away. The main sitting areas are upstairs with uninterrupted views of the sea; the terrace is an excellent place for stargazing as the night sky is dark and frequently clear. There is a downstairs sitting room which leads on to the pool courtyard. The dining area seats up to 14 and opens on to the sea. Msambweni is a small town with local fishermen using traditional methods in dugout canoes. There is snorkelling out at the first reef and a world class Marine National Park - Kisite - just a few miles further south where you can swim with dolphins as well as enjoy the tropical fish and coral. Local fishing boats can take you out to the reef or down the coast. Nightlife, restaurants, sailing, windsurfing, kite surfing is all on offer in Diani 22 kilometres away.

Unspoilt paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Booked this house on recommendation from a good friend and cannot agree with them more!

Access by road is a little bumpy but just adds to the charm and isolation of the place. The house itself is privately set back from the beach, in its own grounds giving a complete sense of privacy but with direct access to the beach. The decoration is beautiful with an endless choice of places to sit and look at the beautiful view. The private pool is set behind the house so no worry of being overlooked. The separate cottages were perfect for us as an extended family, with each sibling taking a different building for them and their children.

The in-house cook is an absolute star! We were so well fed and I still think about the incredible Swali fish curry. Delicious! We bought all our food en route to the house from the airport so advise contacting the chef before arrival so you get everything you need. No shops nearby to top up if you forget something! We bought fresh fish or crab from the local fisherman every day and also had many options for going out on boats trips if we had wanted. We had our rooms cleaned and beds made every day which just added to the total bliss of putting our feet up and relaxing and enjoying being on holiday with my family.

The beach is right on your doorstep and is very beautiful. It is fairly rocky in the water so would recommend taking some 'jelly' shoes or such for walking around.

Can't wait to go back!

From the Owner

Our parents built this house around 25 years ago on a block of virgin land, having sold a house in Malindi on the North coast, which ended up surrounded by nightclubs and hotels. Msambweni is a remote unspoilt fishing town with few tourists right down on the south coast near the Tanzanian border. It's about as far from Somalia as you can get in Kenya! We have just modernized and renovated it extensively, adding the cottage containing the 5th bedroom and the barazza room as well as the pool at the same time.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Ukunda at 22 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Msambweni Car: recommended

The house is on Msambweni beachfront. It is a working beach where local people fish from their dhows and harvest seafood from the reef on foot. There is always something of interest to gaze at as you sit on the veranda looking out. At low tide you can walk along the beach or wander on the reef. At high tide there is swimming and body surfing. There is white sand leading out to the reef.

The nearest airport is in Ukunda, which is around 20 kilometres from Msambweni. You can also fly in to Mombasa and will then have to cross the Likoni ferry to the south coast. We have spent time at the house without a car. We can provide telephone numbers of friendly and reliable taxis and car hire. For the more intrepid there is a regular and very cheap service to Diani via matatu, a public mini bus. There is ample parking if you bring your own cars.

It is 1 mile to Msambweni town, which has a hospital and small local shops.

Travel to Kisite marine national park is by road and by boat. It is 18 miles in total. The Shimba Hills national park, home to elephant and sable antelope, can be visited; a day trip is very worthwhile. It is 22 km to Diani and 55 km to Mombasa.

Further Details:

Diani is the place for water sports, supermarkets, hotels, restaurants, discos, nightlife, ATMs etc. Mombasa is 50 kms away, but the ferry from Likoni on to the island, can take a long time to cross.

From the Owner

We enjoy escaping to this beautiful remote place, where life continues as it has for centuries. The fishermen bring their catch for us to buy straight out of the sea. The local fruit and vegetable man, Mashorobo, visits to take orders for fresh produce and his brother brings seafood. The sky at night is so dark and full of stars that it is astonishing. If you are trying to get away from it all, you can buy your staples as you drive past Diani, and can then spend the rest of the week in peace at Msambweni. It does have beer and petrol as well as other basics if you run out.
