About the Owner

Hi, my name's Alison and my partner is Rob. I have 3 grown up children and now they have fled the nest we have decided to give up the "rat race" and live our dream! We met in 2010 having both pursued very different careers. For the last 3 years I've been an Inclusion Manager and school counsellor in a Catholic High School working with 11 to 16 year old. Prior to this I have worked for social care and I was a Registered General Nurse. Rob has worked as a Forest and Woodland manager and served for 9 years as an Army officer before more recently, working as Head of learning and Development for a children's charity. Our interests include motorcycle touring, keeping fit and outdoor pursuit, and now of course, "living the dream!"

Perfect Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We have just had the most wonderful week in this lovely gite. Alison and Rob are great hosts - and so is Charlie the dog! The house is very clean and the welcome pack is a nice extra, as is the provision of pool towels. The garden is beautiful, perfect for sitting in for a sunny breakfast or an evening drink. There are lots of things to do in the area, our 10 year old son particularly enjoyed our tour of the local windmill, but it's also lovely just spending time relaxing in the garden and pool.

We would love to come again next year!

We are a family of four with 7yr & 5yr old children. We stayed for a week in Forsythia gite and had a fabulous holiday. The gite itself was immaculate. Very clean, all the amenities you need and with just the right balance of modern features & rustic charm. It far exceeded our expectations. The grounds are fab and provided a great area for the kids to let off steam. The pool is great and the kids thoroughly enjoyed it...even in the rain!!!! Alison & Rob were perfect hosts and made us feel very welcome. They are a wealth of information on the local area & things to see & do. Their personal touch made it feel a real home from home. The area itself is great and there is an abundance of things to do. We barely scratched the surface in our week there. Canoeing on the Charente is a must and the best way to see the chateau at Verteuil has to be by canoe on the river! We hired bikes for the week so were able to see lots of lovely rural French villages. The roads were very quiet & great for cycling with the kids. We were lucky enough to have both a deer & pine marten cross our path..amazing!. I have to mention Charlie the dog. He was a big hit, especially with the kids who loved playing with him. Villefagnan itself has a great butchers, bakery & convenience store so ample amenities close by with Ruffec and its larger shops not much farther away. All in all, this is the perfect base to explore the area and thankyou to Alison & Rob for making us feel so welcome. We would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend it. We hope to return soon!

Perfect in every way

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday staying at Alison & Rob's idyllic retreat. We are a family of four and have a 5 & 7yr old. We stayed in Forsythia gite and can honestly say that the accommodation was perfect. It was exceptionally clean, comfortable & well furnished with the perfect combination of modern amenities & rustic charm. The kids loved playing in the garden / orchard and thoroughly enjoyed the swimming pool even in the rain!!!!. Alison & Rob were perfect hosts and were both very friendly making it a real home from home. They were able to give great recommendations on the local area & places to visit etc. Charlie ( Alison & Rob's dog) was a great hit too....very friendly & the kids loved playing with him. With regards to the area itself, there is so much to see & do...we barely scratched the surface in our week there. Villefagnan is a lovely village with a great butchers, bakery & convenience store. We hired bikes for the week & the country roads were exceptionally quiet & a great way to see the rural villages. We also went canoeing from Rejellant to Verteuil..absolutely amazing. Sadly, our week passed far too quickly but we hope to return soon....Eric, Lisa, Jack & Erin.

Peaceful retreat in the Charente

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent a lovely relaxing fortnight in this clean and comfortable gite. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome, with a thoughtful welcome pack and so many other little extras which made it easy to feel at home. Ali and Rob were friendly and helpful hosts who were ready to help or to give advice when it was requested. The pool was beautifully clean and just the right temperature, the gardens were roomy, colourful and full of wildlife and the little hamlet of Le Pouyaud was charming. We enjoyed exploring the surrounding countryside, finding lots to do and see. Le Rochefoucauld, Vertueil and Tusson were all well worth visiting (with nice restaurants) and not too far away. An ideal spot for being as active or as lazy as you wish.

Little gem

  • 5 of 5

Alison and Rob's gîte was perfect for our short stay in the area to attend Angie Weston's mosaic course in nearby Bouligné. The village is very quiet so that we slept well and could admire starlit skies without interference from other lights. The rooms are very comfortable, and the atmosphere extremely friendly, with a delightful dog Charlie to welcome guests. The weather was hot and the swimming pool and beautiful garden were a real boon to unwind in after a day's work cutting mosaic tiles!

Relaxing & Rural

  • 5 of 5

We've just enjoyed a peaceful and relaxing week based at Aly & Rob's beautiful property. We have an 8 & 15 year old, and based ourselves there for trips on the river, walking and cycling locally in quiet and rural surroundings. The Gite was excellent, the hosts were friendly but unobtrusive, and we left feeling chilled and happy. La Rochelle was a long day trip, but easy driving and a great day out at the beach. We would highly recommend this location for families.

From the Owner

After 18 months of searching in France, we finally decided that the Charente area was for us. We love the rolling countryside the peace and quiet, the incredibly welcoming French people, the sunflowers and amazing variety of wildlife. We wanted an up and running business and when this one came on the market we both fell in love with it. We decided the place we bought would have to be our dream holiday location and accommodation. This met all of our criteria and more! A lovely pool, amazing gardens and holiday gites that we would happily live in!!

From the Owner

Our home and holiday gites lie in the small hamlet of Le Pouyaud. The hamlet has a quiet rustic charm that is sleepy but not isolated. Our home is a 17th century farm house with outbuildings that have been lovingly converted to the attractive holiday destination it is today. Le Pouyaud is only 10 Km from the lively market town of Ruffec and a 30 minute walk from the quaint village of Villefagnan. A special feature worthy of mention is the lovely swimming pool and sun terrace, surrounded by landscaped gardens and several secluded and sheltered sun traps. There is also a fire pit, ideal for relaxing in the evening by an open log fire while enjoying a glass of wine… or two!
