Overview

About the property

Garden Apartment in Ventnor, Isle of Wight, England - Excellent Location, Furnished As A 'Home From Home'

We have a little house in France* and over the years have been collecting furniture and other items we've found in Brocante shops and markets and bringing them back to England. Our décor includes some of these pieces and mixes vintage French country with fabrics and colours from familiar names such as Laura Ashley and Annie Sloan. It's very much a 'home from home' with a lived in feel - if you're looking for bland, soul-less or flat-pack uniformity, then you'll be disappointed!

The house itself was built around 1870 and features in some of the original Victorian paintings of Ventnor. It stands at the foot of St Boniface Down and overlooks the rooftops of the town down towards the sea. We've lovingly converted the ground floor into a romantic, private and thoughtfully equipped space, just for couples. You have your own front entrance, private parking plus full use of the garden (which you can access via the side gate or through your own back door).

The focus really is on comfort so the apartment is spotlessly clean and offers special touches such as a choice of slipper bath or walk-in shower, high quality linens and toiletries and a well equipped kitchen to help you feel 'at home' straight away. We've thought of the practical things too with complimentary WiFi and central heating throughout - a perfect place to cosy-up for a winter break.

After a day of exploring, you'll have the perfect place to sit and relax with a glass of wine or cup of tea. The Downs are literally at the end of the garden path and if you're a nature lover, you'll enjoy seeing our regular wildlife visitors throughout the seasons including a wide range of butterflies, birds and bees. We consider ourselves very lucky to also have a pair of red squirrels raid our hazelnut feeder daily, we've named them Fred and Ginger and they're very entertaining!

Ventnor really is the perfect location for a romantic break. The town has individuality, character and everything within walking distance; perfect for strolling on the beach or the beautiful downland, wildlife spotting, seeking out rare flora and fauna at the Ventnor Botanic Garden, water sports, sea safaris, tennis, golf and of course challenging cycling routes. Ventnor hosts its own carnival and several festivals throughout the year; the Isle of Arts in May and the Ventnor Fringe Festival in August. And with it's famously temperate climate, Ventnor is also ideal for an off season visit - don't miss the Boxing Day swim when islanders brave the icy cold water for charity. If you take the coastal path from Ventnor or walk down through the Ventnor Botanic Garden, you'll discover Steephill Cove, a hidden gem inaccessible by car.

Bonchurch is also just a short stroll away and offers a wealth of pretty walks. You can relax in the Pond Café, visit the pottery studios, explore secluded coves along the coastal path, tackle the more challenging footpaths weaving their way up the undercliff or take the gentle stroll along the waters edge stopping at the SeaPot for fresh crab pasties at Wheeler's Bay.

While there's a lot to keep you in Ventnor and Bonchurch, you'll also be conveniently located for visiting other favourites such as Steephill Cove, Shanklin Chine, Godshill, The Needles, the Isle of Wight Festival, Cowes Week, walking and cycling festivals - even a Garlic Festival! Nothing is too far away on the island and we'll even share a few lesser known gems that visitors don't always find.

So whether you're looking for a few days of quality time together, celebrating a special occasion, or have weeks of water-sports and hiking planned, rest assured that we'll do everything we can to make your stay memorable - for all the right reasons!

We're welcoming guests this year for short off-season breaks and longer summer stays.

About Shelley Andrews

Simon and I both grew up in North London but have started a new adventure with our move to the Isle of Wight.

As well as continuing with our house renovations and exploring this stunningly beautiful island, we're now able to welcome couples to stay in our Garden Apartment here in Ventnor (OD E13567) and of course continue to visit our beloved second home in beautiful Carcassonne (OD FR5911).

Shelley Andrews purchased this apartment in 2012

Why Shelley Andrews chose Isle of Wight

We'd talked about moving out of London and wanted to relocate somewhere beautiful by the sea, with lots of period properties and still be near to friends and family. It had to be Ventnor on the Isle of Wight...

We loved the house straight away and knew it had potential. And once we saw the garden, there was no turning back - imagine having St Boniface Down at the end of your garden path!

As well as moving in ourselves, we've also been encouraging the wildlife to feel at home. We've seen many types of birds and butterflies in the garden, but best of all are our two regular red squirrels who we've named 'Fred and Ginger'. They are hazelnut addicts!

We're also enjoying exploring the coastline with Ventnor, Bonchurch and Steephill Cove beaches all within walking distance from the house.

What makes this apartment unique

The garden apartment is the first part of our Isle of Wight home to be completed and we're now welcoming guests. We've designed the space to offer couples a comfortable, cosy and private place in which to unwind after a day exploring the island (or even just relaxing in the garden!)

Being strictly 'adults only', we've chosen good quality fittings, luxury mattress, linens and towels to provide that 'home from home' experience. Relax in the slipper bath or have a refreshing shower; we've fitted both so you have the choice.

Ventnor is one of the sunniest places in the UK but to ensure our winter guests are also snug, you'll find central heating throughout.

We also offer many personal touches to help make your stay memorable.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: We welcome 7+ night bookings between June and September 2017 with arrival / departure mainly on a Saturday. Short breaks available off-peak and sometimes during gaps between summer bookings - please do enquire just in case. For safety reasons we do not permit smoking anywhere in the property. As the garden apartment is just for couples or a single traveller, we're sorry that children and pets are also not permitted. Outside: The apartment has its own private front entrance. It also has its own garden access at the back of the house and secure storage for bikes (by arrangement). Use of the garden is officially 'shared' with the owners although in practice every effort is made to respect guests' privacy. While the garden will be an ongoing project this year, its informal nature increases wild visitors and we've already seen a red squirrel and a badger, in addition to many species of birds, bees and butterflies. Cows and goats sometimes graze on the downs - they are very friendly and love to pop their heads over the fence! One section of the garden will be left wild to encourage further visitors and guests are very welcome to relax and treat the garden as their own during their stay. The garden apartment also comes with its own parking space at the front of the property - a definite bonus in Ventnor! Utility Room: Iron, ironing board, hairdryer, picnic hamper and lots more provided. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Quality bed linen, towels, face cloths, tea towels etc all provided. Cleaning (at the end of each stay) and laundry is included in the rental price. Additional cleaning during your stay can be arranged upon request (please ask for a quotation). Other: WiFi internet access throughout. Own front entrance and rear access to the garden.

Excellent apartment in ideal location

  • 5 of 5

We have just enjoyed a lovely week at this charming apartment. It is exactly as shown in the photographs and as the description. The apartment is extremely comfortable, very well equipped and spotlessly clean. Shelley is a charming hostess who provides an extensive welcoming "hamper", is on call of you need anything but is never intrusive. The location of the apartment is ideal for local walks or for touring the Island. Definitely a place to recommend and one we hope to revisit soon.

A beautiful, luxurious, comfortable, generous, grown up space...and kind, thoughtful hosts.

  • 5 of 5

This apartment exceeded already high expectations! It is as beautiful as the photos and is a generous, well thought out space for a couple. The attention to quality, detail, aesthetics & comfort throughout is outstanding.

I especially loved the beautiful & incredibly comfortable bed & linens, the spacious bathroom with the luxuriously deep slipper bath and double vanity, and the big peaceful garden backing onto the downs with resident red squirrels 🐿🐿

The living room is charming and comfortable (a sofa each!) and I loved the fresh sunflowers left for us on the table. There are so many pretty touches throughout the apartment.

The kitchen is well thought out & the hosts were very generous with provisions, which was much appreciated! Even the entrance to the apartment is pleasing, with a bench and planters full of colourful flowers.

Shelley & Simon have done an amazing job renovating to such a high standard with exquisite taste and are really such kind & thoughtful people.

Very much thanks to them, their gorgeous apartment and some very fortuitous weather, we had a delightful & very relaxing holiday.

A welcoming, very comfortable holiday home that instantly gets your holiday off to a great start.

  • 5 of 5

Shelley and Simon have cleverly created a stunning holiday apartment that makes you feel comfy and at home the minute you walk in. A warm welcome on arrival and personal touches include several food items initially needed, with extras included, we had fresh strawberries and the best cream I have ever tasted!! Shelley is so friendly from the moment you book and nothing is too much trouble, even booking our ferry crossing for us, keeping in touch every step of the way so that by the time you arrive she feels like a friend, and although Shelley and Simon live close by, your privacy is never comprised as they will not disturb you without prior appointment. The location of the property is fantastic and Ventnor is beautiful. Anywhere on the island is easily accessible either in your own vehicle or by public transport and with so many beautiful places to visit it is the perfect holiday. Thank you Shelley and Simon for helping to make our holiday extra special. I would recommend your holiday home as one of the very best we have stayed in.

Comfortable, immaculately clean apartment close to amenities.

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely apartment which provided us with a comfortable retreat at the end of each day of our holiday. It is close to all amenities that Ventnor has to offer. The town is, like many other British seaside resorts, a little faded in places but there are many beautiful spots within easy reach and great opportunities for walking which was the main focus of our holiday. The surrounding area is very hilly so you need to have a reasonable level of fitness. There are several eateries of all types in the town. We particularly enjoyed The Bistro on Pier Street and The Bonchurch Inn though speed of service at the latter is a little slow. A little further afield, The Buddle Inn at Niton has a picturesque setting, The Needles are a scenic wonder with plenty to occupy you and Osborne House is well worth going to. We only had a week but could have spent much longer.

Beautiful Apartment

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Swiss Cottage for our honeymoon and were warmly greeted by Shelley on arrival, she made us feel at home and was quick to respond to questions by text during our stay.

The apartment is in a great location and the parking was a real bonus! Everything was decorated beautifully and to a really high standard, the kitchen was well kitted out which we made use of on several nights. The bed was lovely and comfortable, the bathroom was luxurious and the living/dining area was warm and cosy. We didn't make full use of the garden as the weather was a little on the breezy side but on warmer days it's a lovely addition to the apartment.

There was lots to do within walking distance of the apartment, shops, restaurants (In particular Masala Bay if you like Indian Food) and lovely coastal walks. Definitely check out Crave ice cream parlour - we became regulars in our short time there!

If you're looking for a beautiful apartment for two on the Isle of Wight then look no further than Swiss Cottage, it's absolutely perfect and we are already planning a return visit.

0.4 Miles
Ventnor
Car: recommended

We're a ten minute walk downhill to the beautiful beach at Ventnor where you can hire deckchairs, sample Minghella's ice cream (delicious!), take a stroll around the charming shops or just relax. In October 2015, a pod of 30 dolphins was spotted here just offshore, there's a great video-clip if you search on You-Tube! Or you could choose to walk down through the very pretty lanes and footpaths of Bonchurch to the beach there - about a 15 minute walk from the house. But our favourite has to be Steephill Cove which you can walk to either from Ventnor beach or via a footpath from the Ventnor Botanic Garden.

Travel:

Please allow about 30 minutes to drive across the island to Ventnor from the ferry terminals. If you're travelling without a car then the Island offers a good bus service, challenging cycling terrain and many, many miles of footpaths for all abilities.

Foot passengers arriving at Ryde can catch a train to Shanklin where we're happy to collect you by arrangement. We're also able to collect you from other points on the Island and to store bicycles or other equipment (again, by arrangement).

Distances:

Ventnor Esplanade - 0.4 miles

Bonchurch - 0.4 miles

Ventnor Botanic Garden - 1.3

Shanklin - 3.5 miles

Godshill - 5.5 miles

Further Details:

We're lucky to have the convenience of banks, chain stores and supermarkets alongside the small independent shops that help to make Ventnor so interesting and unique. These include antique furniture, pottery, jewellery, interiors, and of course food shops. And if you like to buy local produce then you're in for a treat with speciality breads, cakes, fresh fruit and vegetables, island meat, wine, fruit juice, honey and ice cream all on sale nearby. There's even fresh fish caught and sold daily down at the Ventnor fishery. Great for those who would want to eat at home or perhaps prepare a picnic to take on a day out.

If cooking while on holiday isn't for you then you'll be pleased to hear that Ventnor is fast becoming known as the food capital of the island. We'll provide you with comprehensive information about eating out both in town and across the island to help you get the most from your stay.
