About Nicky Lankester

We are originally from the UK but currently live in Tanzania. Felix is a wildlife vet and Nicky a freelance documentary film-maker. We have three kids….all boys with lots of energy so Cornwall is the ideal place for them! We try to come back to the UK every summer to see friends and family so Merlins Cottage is our base when we are there.

Nicky Lankester purchased this house in 2013

Why Nicky Lankester chose Tintagel

Merlins Cottage is an ideal home for us when we are in the UK. For a family there is always stuff to do nearby from surfing at Trebarwith Strand, sailing in Rock, cycling on Bodmin Moor to strolling along the SW Coast Path. But even on days when none of us feel like moving, relaxing at home while the kids play in the garden is our idea of a perfect summer!

Cornwall offers us something so incredibly different from Africa and yet in ways it is also quite similar. In both places our children are permanently active and outdoors…I think the only thing that changes is maybe the clothing!

What makes this house unique

There is nothing quite like waking up and being able to see the sea from your bed! With lovely views across National Trust farmland, you can happily spend the morning sipping tea, watching the sheep grazing while gently planning what fun you are going to get up to in the day. The house, which was fully renovated in 2014, is situated along a very quiet, private farm track so you can very quickly feel wonderfully alone in the world and completely at peace.

If someone is feeling energetic they can stroll over the fields to Tintagel to pick up fresh bread or have a coffee whilst others laze around the open plan house, enjoying the views from the sun room and the large garden.

Tintagel is just a short walk away across the fields. From there you visit the famous castle, a place inextricably linked with the legend of King Arthur. While you are at the castle you can explore Merlins Cave, an extraordinary 330ft long cave passing completely through Tintagel island. Tintagel is bursting with life and there are plenty of shops, bars and cafes to choose from.

For those wishing to go sailing / water skiing then Rock is ideal and only 25mins by car.

Perfect Cornwall holiday

  • 5 of 5

A lovely house located, just outside Tintagel. The house is very well appointed, having everything you'll need, and is a great base to visit the north Cornwall coast. The conservatory across the back of the house providers great views of sunsets, whatever the weather! We had a slight problem gaining access due to a hand over, which was solved very quickly, the owner even rang me from Kenya to assist. Some highlights for us were Tintagel Castle, cycling the camel ride from Wadebridge to Padstow and back, picking mussels at low tide from Harlyn Beach, exploring rock pools on Constantine Beach, the walk down to Bossiney Cove, and watching some filming of Doc Martin in Port Isaac. Some of our favorite eateries were the Port William pub at Trebarwith Sands, the Chapel Café in Port Isaac and the Cherry Tree Café in Padstow. We hope to be back again soon.

Beautiful position, perfect for 8 people.

  • 4 of 5

Perfect accommodation for 8 people with 3 bathrooms and downstairs cloakroom, stunning position. Shame property was rather damp, which made it feel cold when sun wasn't out. Could do with heated towel rails upstairs as nowhere to dry bath towels. Living room furniture, floors and carpets bit dirty in places. Well kitted out, everything you could want in the kitchen, plenty of storage space. Overall it suited us very well, not too far to Tintagel and beach and we loved the area.

Superb cottage

  • 5 of 5

Very lovely and comfortable cottage. Beautiful location looking over the north Cornwall coastline. Just a short walk into Tintagel. This is a very spacious and well equipped place to stay with your family. We had a great time here even though the weather wasn't the best. Sitting in the sunroom at the back playing games and watching the sunset was just awesome.

The 4 large bedrooms are very comfortable and the whole setting very peaceful. Would definitely stay here again when we next visit this part of Cornwall. Thanks to Nicky the owner for her help and for providing such great accommodation.

Rustic house in beautiful location with wide open spaces

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely stay at Merlin Cottage, it was a large and spacious house for 6 adults and 2 toddlers. The garden size was also an immense plus.

There are a few things which were a problem for us. The high chair has not got any strap on it, so we improvised with an apron poked through the strap holes as my 1 year old is very adventurous.

The level of cleanliness was not what we expected. There are two v large mats in the kitchen and in the sun room and neither had been moved to clean underneath where there was quite a lot of dirt. These were moved by the children playing.

The second week we were there it rained heavily and two bedrooms were affected by large damp patches, mould and peeling paint. The room with the fire exit door was the worst, it had a strip of wall paper missing just above the skirting board and it looked like the wallpaper had been patched up around the window. The en suite to this room, needs a shaver point and the noisy floorboard is annoying at night and the ill fitting lino on the floor is not best.

Also the cream bedroom carpets upstairs are marked and stained and there were quite a few dog hairs on the carpet and on the day bed in the tv area downstairs.

In all, considering how much we paid I would have expected a better standard, its a strange mix of up to the minute appliances and utensils in a kitchen with brown stains on the ceiling. Amazing beds and curtains in damp, slightly mouldy large rooms. Also the books and dvds and games etc are a great addition.

The bed sizes are fantastic an they were very accommodating with my allergy to feathers.

Also with two children the tv needed to be on the wall as it nearly got pulled over and the unit it is sitting on, is a bit of a hazard. The front of it very easily falls open like a desk top and is quite heavy. This nearly knocked out my 1 year old, but we moved a chest in front of it to prevent access.

Also we thought it said the beach was 5 minutes walk away, maybe it was 15 mins, but the beach is a much further walk even than 15 mins and is a very steep walk back and does not actually have a beach till the end of the day due to the tide. That was disappointing, so some more accurate information would be good here.

We still enjoyed our holiday immensely but had just wished for something a little less stained and fresher.

Dream Country Cottage with Modern Amenities

  • 5 of 5

Our group loved this place and wish we'd stayed a few days more. Really close to the walking trail. This place is really charming. We loved sitting around the kitchen for group meals and enjoying the sea facing windows in the adjacent room. Very windy and rainy while we were there so we didn't spend a lot of time outside but we still have a wonderful visit! Very comfortable. Highly recommend having a car to see the area!

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay but sorry about the weather. At least from the kitchen you can see the sea and pretend to be outside at the very least...?! Hope to see you again sometime soon. Nicky and Felix

Winter retreat

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful retreat from the winter gales and invigorating walks.

Comfortable and cosy for 5 and a dog, with room to spare. A well equipped house, loads of hot water and somewhere for those wet and muddy boots to dry out. A house where you feel very much at home.

The housekeeping was first class and Nicky the owner was very helpful in the preparation for our visit.

The house is situated near the South west coastal path and ideal for popping into Tintagel.

And the sunsets (when it stopped raining) were spectacular.

Thank you
