Cottage In Devon With Views Rural Views In All Directions

Updated: 22-Aug-2016
Cottage in Dalwood, Nr. Axminster, South Devon, England - A Tranquil Location Near The Village Of Dalwood Only 20 Minutes From The Jurassic Coast

The Cider House is a detached cottage in a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It sits alone in a large enclosed area of lawn bordered by the Corry Brook. There are views over the countryside in every direction, and you can enjoy total peace and tranquillity as you relax in your own garden area. Walking ten minutes by the Corry Brook will take you to the pretty village of Dalwood with its 14th century church, the Tuckers Arms pub famous for its food and the Community Village Shop. The area is a walker's paradise having many miles of footpaths and hedgerows. The South West Coastal Path along the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site, is only twenty minutes away by car. Garden lovers will find plenty of inspiration from the local gardens open to the public. One of the best, Burrow Farm Gardens, is in the village. Food lovers can dine at the River Cottage headquarters, or have a more modest lunch and make some purchases at their shop in Axminster, a 15 minute drive.

About the Owner

The Cider House was completely renovated about 15 years ago by the owner, a Chartered Building Surveyor, for the use of elderly parents. It was therefore built to a high quality. Unfortunately through dementia parents have been unable to use the cottage. We are happy to share our beautiful location and village close to the stunning Jurassic coastline with our guests.

A lovely cottage in beautiful surroundings. Ann and Mick gave us a warm welcome and were very helpful. David and Jayne. Sept. 2013.

Very sorry for having to go home, we had such a lovely time, beautiful gardens, such a lovely couple, hope to come back, very relaxing and comfortable, children loved it here. Many, many thanks Angi, Neil Ryan and Megan. August 2013.

We've really enjoyed our week at the Cider House. What a lovely, peaceful setting- hearing the brook, the birds and the wind in the trees. The cottage is very comfortable - thank you very much. Chris, Olwyn, Ben & Andrew. June 2013.

not very happy. wasn't worth the money very poor inside. you had the constant smell of stained wood that had been treated and it got on your chest you couldn't get rid of it. you had to sit with the doors open all day. very bad. the towels were very old and worn, the bedding was poor not up to standard for the price they asked. nor was the room it self net curtain etc. wasn't nice at all. would advise not to go unless they get rid of the smell change the bedding and towels spend some money on nice ones. and get rid of the kettle it needed descaling badly.shouldn't be rented out until its changed and made more welcoming.

Owner's Response: I was both surprised and upset to view this comment posted online. I believe their claim that it is expensive is definitely untrue as I have always tried to make the letting price competitive. The cottage was rebuilt 15 years ago from the ruins of the old Cider House in our grounds to act as a possible home for dependant parents in the future. Unfortunately dementia prevented both of them taking up this option, therefore it was let as a holiday home to make use of the building. We have been in the fortunate position of not needing an income from the cottage, but of wanting to ensure our costs were covered. You are invited to compare prices with other similar properties. Thus, the main beam from the Cider House was preserved and treated 15 years ago and not treated since, and not one of our clients over these years has mentioned a problem with any smell. I have a guest book full of compliments for the accommodation. Questionnaires are provided for clients to make suggestions for improvement, and the few I have received over the years have been acted on. I cannot understand why this client's complaints were not made at the time directly to me, or left on the questionnaire. I have never received any complaints about the towels, sheets or kettle during 15 years of letting.

The Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site is a 20 minute drive from the Cider House. Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Beer, Branscombe and Sidmouth are approximately 30 minutes by car. The S.W. Coastal path follows the whole length of this coast.

Lyme and Charmouth are famous for fossils. Lyme with its sandy beach and Sidmouth have been popular resort towns since Regency times. Beer and Branscombe are pretty coastal villages with fishing trips available. We recommend breakfast on the beach at Beer.

Use of a car is essential. The property is 15 minutes from the A30/A303 from the M25/M3 to Exeter, and 10 minutes from the A35 coastal road. At the property there is generally no traffic noise.

Exeter Airport is half an hour away, Bristol Airport 1 1/2 hours, Heathrow is 2 hours away and Gatwick over 3 hours.

Plymouth is 1/12 hours away, Newhaven is 3 hours away.

Dalwood village is one mile away by road, and about 1/2 mile on the footpath.

Many coastal Resorts are within half an hour by car. Exeter is 3/4 hour by car.

Pecorama (model railways) is in Beer, with wonderful sea views and beautiful gardens. Crealy Park with rides and animals for children and the Donkey Sanctuary are both near Sidmouth. The Fleet Air Arm Museum is at Yeovilton. Glastonbury, Wells, Dorchester and Weymouth are 1 to 1 1/2 hours drive.

Further Details:

There is a Community Shop in the village open 7 days a week. Supermarkets, banks etc. are available in Axminster and Honiton about 15 minutes drive by car. Honiton has a large number of antique shops and a museum where Honiton Lace can be seen. Axminster has a museum showing the history of carpets in the area, and has a River Cottage shop and lunchtime restaurant. The main River Cottage restaurant is about 20 minutes drive.
