Beautiful property, in a quiet and idyllic location
About the Owner
About Ian Reynolds
We came to live in France during August 2012, after a 4 year property search and nearly 400 viewings! The old adage regarding ‘heart rather than head’ couldn’t have been more relevant to our new French home – we completely fell for the stunning outdoor space/s even though the house left many of our wish-list boxes unticked. We signed the Compromis within 48 hours of our first viewing! We were lucky enough to be able to take early retirement, having both held pretty busy stressful jobs and so we came to this area looking forward to taking our young Golden Retriever for long walks through the beautiful surrounding countryside. We have settled quickly into village life here and have made many good friends.

Why Ian Reynolds chose Deux-Sevres
We chose this area for several reasons: ease of access to and from the UK, both by air and by sea; sunny micro-climate rivalling that of the Cote d’Azur climate and a far more relaxed lifestyle. So, we think we have the best of all worlds; we live in a tiny village with all the tranquillity we sought, and yet are within easy reach of towns such as Niort, Poitiers, Angouleme and la Rochelle all of which have a lively ‘café culture’.
What makes this cottage unique
Our cottage – Le Vieux Cordonnier – was originally the village shoemaker’s workshop and we have sympathetically refurbished it to provide all the equipment and other facilities needed to make your holiday comfortable and problem-free. The cottage has a traditional open plan living space with a fully equipped kitchen and also has a groundfloor bedroom and bathroom. Forming part of a typical ensemble of buildings around the pool and the cottage garden where guests can enjoy the total privacy our grounds afford. There are numerous options for ‘al fresco’ dining either in the sunshine or shade and guests have unrestricted access to our 10m x 5m open air swimming pool.

Beautiful property, in a quiet and idyllic location
This is a stunning 5 star property in a nice quiet rural location. One of the best self-catering properties we have stayed in. It was immaculate and very much reflected the French style. The English owners live next door to the property, and are very thoughtful and considerate of giving you your own time and space, but are very much on hand if you need them for local knowledge/direction or just general help with the use of the facilities. Nothing was ever too much trouble. They cooked us a first class, three course meal on the night of our arrival which was very much appreciated after travelling for 8 hours. The property is in a perfect location for piece, quiet and relaxation. The pool area is stunning with a ‘hanger’ which provided us with a lovely space in which to enjoy the outdoors for all of our evening meals and playing family games into the night. We had superb weather, with temperatures of 30 degrees plus. We spent most of our days lazing by the pool but we also enjoyed Kayaking at nearby Ruffec, a trip to the riverside city of Poiters and a day out at Futurocope (French theme park). The Pièce de résistance for our 14 year old son was a pit stop at Le Mans Race Track and museum on our way back home to the ferry at Caen. A must for any car enthusiast! It was our first family holiday to France (family of 4, kids are 14 & 10 years old). We can’t recommend this property or area enough. It was perfect.
Superb Country Hideaway
I cannot recommend this property highly enough - we would definately return. The house was immaculately clean and the house and the linen and towels all smelt beautiful. The property itself was very well equipped and had a very well stocked welcome basket of goodies. The best thing is the outdoor space, the "outside hanger" - we lived in this space - it is the perfect place to sit and relax. The pool was brilliant too and kept very clean by the owners. The "icing on the cake" was the delicious three course meal that we were served on the first night. What a lovely touch and so welcome after a day of travelling. Thank you Ian and Margaret for your kindness and attention to detail - a really lovely week. The Jones' Family
Fabulous 3 week holiday -July-August 2015
We have just spent a wonderful 3 weeks at Le Vieux Cordonnier in Melleran.
The gite is absolutely wonderful and very very comfortable for a family of 4 (our children are 12 and 13 years old. Ian and Margaret are super hosts and you will want for nothing during your stay, they have lots of local information to direct you to places of interest. The meal on our arrival after 8 hours travelling was beautiful and very welcome.
Many days were spent by the lovely pool as we were lucky enough to have lots of sunshine during the 3 weeks. Visits to Niort, La Rochelle, Poitiers are all easily accessible and kayaking on the Charente is a must.
A lovely haven of peace and tranquillity, which was just what we wanted.
You'll have a lovely holiday here with great hosts. Enjoy!
Well-appointed gite in a peaceful village
This new gite is extremely well appointed and the owners, who live next door, are perfect hosts - extremely thoughtful and helpful, but not intrusive. The gite has all the equipment that one could wish for and everything is in very good condition. The welcome pack of food - in the fridge and in a basket - was comprehensive and typical of the owners' level of consideration. The pool is excellent, although it was too cold to use while we were there, and the abri (covered barn) is perfect for outdoor meals. The village is very quiet (except when the dogs get started) but there are lots of interesting places to visit, including Niort, La Rochelle, Oradour-sur-Drone, Celles-sur-Belle, Melle and Poitiers. The area has good walks and restaurants of all standards, including good ones we tried in Chef Boutonne, Melle and Niort. We recommend this gite highly.
A truly great holiday from start to finish. We were welcomed with a home cooked 4 course meal prepared by Margaret and served with aplomb by Ian. The location is tranquil but close enough to lots of activities. Ian and Margaret looked after our every need but didn't in anyway intrude, they even got our daughter her own paddling pool! A wonderful holiday with a great mix of chilling by the pool and experiencing the beautiful countryside.
Rural French Oasis
Idyllic setting for this super tasteful conversion of an old shoemaker's workshop. Everything you need for a beautiful holiday. Great pool. Lovely walled gardens with terrific covered outdoor space. Ian and Margaret were delightful hosts who made sure we wanted for nothing but also gave us our own space. My daughters just didn't want to leave.
