Overview

About the property

House in Bagnolo del Salento Nr. Leece, Puglia, Italy - Architecturally Unique, In The Heart Of The Village, Only 15 Minutes Drive From Splendid Beaches

I was on holiday in Bagnolo in 2012 and fell in love with the simplicity of the village, the beauty of the area and the genuine, discreet friendliness of the people. Bagnolo is a simple working village in the fertile Salento area of Puglia; benefiting from an artisan patisserie/ ice-cream parlour, a very excellent restaurant, pizzerias, simple bars, a fishmonger, butcher, two supermarkets and a pharmacy. The quality and price of the food is astounding wherever you go. During July and August concerts, religious, cultural and food festivals take place every evening across the region. In a two week period it would not be difficult to visit a different beach every day within a maximum of 30 minutes drive, the closest being only 10-15 minutes away.

About Alex Di Re

My name is Alex Di Re, originally Italian but living in the UK since 35 years, in London and Bournemouth now. I am an Account Manager for a software company and recently purchased this house as a retirement "escape route". I had the house refurbished in 2013 to a high specification so discerning people can enjoy a wonderful stay. I visit twice a year with my family to eat like a king and bathe in the slow pace of this little known corner of Italy. I have two kids, 16 and 13 yrs of age who love it there...why wouldn't they; you can buy pizza by the metre, the ice cream is awesome, the sea is like a swimming pool! My favourite non-beachy places nearby are Lecce, Otranto and the cathedral in Galantina (don't google it, just go there, trust me, you will be amazed..Unesco thinks so too).

Alex Di Re purchased this house in 2013

Why Alex Di Re chose Bagnolo del Salento

I was on holiday in Bagnolo in 2012 and fell in love with the simplicity of the village, the beauty of the area and the genuine, discreet friendliness of the people which is known across Italy. I am not religious but it's humbling to see people cross themselves as they walk or drive past the Church. Salento is a large region with the very touristy Brindisi and Bari areas already well known at a European level. Personally I prefer the area south of Lecce (a baroque gem) where my house is because the coast is more varied compared to the rather boring beaches further north. I love how in a maximum of 25 minutes you can drive to a different amazing beach every day! In July and August all the villages compete to offer religious and food festivals, there is something to do every evening.

What makes this house unique

The house is rather unique with high vaulted ceilings and everything is brand new and of good quality. It's right in the pedestrian centre and remarkable because it is adjacent to the church, the roof terrace is a special place to sit with an aperitif. Of course the bells may wake some individuals but you can always doze off again if that happens. You'll be amazed how in a few days you will be living in sync with them and village life, truly and deeply relaxing. In the local shops you can buy fresh fish daily and all good quality basics. 50 yards away is the most amazing restaurant, Le Tre Forchette, OMG..I salivate just at the thought of going back! I have English speaking friends a few houses away if you need any help and I'm always available, just a phone call away.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Alex,

We have a beautiful stay in your house. The weather was very hot for us so we started our trips early and in the afternoon in the wunderful landscape and the beautiful small Towns. We returned late and had dinner in the yard or on the roof top. We have been to Otranto, to the Bar Paolo and Le Tre Forchette for Dinner. We loved it.

Kind regards, Christiane und Dierk und Kinder

Thank you !

  • 5 of 5

Alex is as nice and welcoming as a friend who would be expecting you to 1/ Feel yourself at home and 2/Share the best of the great emotions you will get in the really authentic Bagnolo and the fantastic Puglia region (wonderful and true people, mind-blowing beaches, generous sun, great and diverse collection of villages/city and natural areas, and overwhelming food and wine quality). It all worked 100% for us. Thank you Alex and à bientôt...

Stunning Property

  • 5 of 5

The property is absolutely beautiful, tucked away in its own private courtyard just behind the main thoroughfare, only a few minutes walk from the shops and restaurants and yet very private. The roof terrace was our favourite spot at the end of the day, sitting with a glass of wine and literally being in the sun until it disappeared. Highly recommended.

Being Italian for a week

  • 5 of 5

Staying in Alex's beautiful house in Bagnolo del Salento was a real tonic. Bagnolo itself is a tranquil, 'local's' town, where no-one speaks English but you still feel at home. And the house itself is just beautiful - an obvious labour of love to restore by someone with excellent taste. A fantastic mixture of the old and new, with all mod cons and perfectly clean. It's a great base from which to explore southern Puglia, and to 'become Italian' for a week! Such a beautiful region, with so many unspoilt places to visit - in fact . . . don't come here, you'll hate it!!

Perfect

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a week with our family in this beautifully restored house. The roof terrace is great for relaxing/ dining/ listening to the surprisingly chirpy church bells. We were grateful for the efficient air conditioning on the hottest days. Bagnolo is a quiet village, away from tourists, but has everything you need - pastry/ice cream shop/ bar/ supermarket/ post office/ vans selling produce/ restaurants all on or near the main square by the house. There was always space to park in the small square by the house. Le Tre Forchette restaurant has a beautiful garden to dine out in.

Alex was a very attentive host both before and during our stay,- easily contactable by phone or email - providing extensive information about the house and the area.

We enjoyed visits to the towns of Otranto, Gallipoli, Lecce, Maglie and the beaches at Alimini, Porto Badisco, Castro Marina and Santa Cesarea terme.

In short, a week wasn't long enough - fantastic house, great food, great beaches, beautiful towns.

Thank you Alex!

Superb!

  • 5 of 5

We were absolutely bowled over by this lovely property in the middle of the delightful village of Bagnolo del Salento. The house itself has been beautifully restored to a very high standard which far exceeded our expectations. Bagnolo itself is about a 20 minute drive from the nearest beach and is a haven of peace, tranquility and old fashioned charm. The village patisserie and restaurants are an easy stroll away and the food is great. The beaches are busy in August (surprise!) but we just learned to get up early to get a good spot. The owner of the property (Alex) provided lots of detailed info about the area all of which was useful, up-to-date and accurate and helped us get the most from our holiday. In short, we enjoyed it so much we've already booked to go again next year.

Stunning property in a real gem of a village

  • 5 of 5

What a pleasure it has been to not only stay at Martano House in Bagnolo del Salento but also to make the booking in the first place. Alex provided us with real hands on information about the house, village & surrounding area, as if he was walking around on holiday with us. We were fortunate enough that on the day we arrived that the village had a weekend of festivities….or perhaps that’s coz we had arrived!! It was an amazing sight, with music, lights, fireworks, singing & dancing. The house was perfect, more like staying in someone’s home rather than a holiday rental. The kitchen was a chef’s delight with proper utensils for proper Italian cooking, but of course there are also the local restaurants / pizzerias if slaving over a hot stove is too much like hard work. The work put in to renovate Martano House is stunning, from the vaulted ceilings, to the walk-in fireplace shower. A real treat to stay at and explore the wonderful Salento Puglia region of Italy. We will be back.
