Property

Updated: 03-Dec-2016
House in Skouloufia, Nr. Rethymnon, Crete, Greece - Peaceful Location in the countryside, near the beach and the city of Rethymno

Villa Gaia is located in the village of Skouloufia, 18km from the main town of Rethymno. The nearest beach is in Stavromenos which is only 6km away, where there are supermarkets and tavernas. However, the village of Skouloufia is within walking distance. There, you can find a traditional cafe and a taverna. It is important to note how close is the villa to two of the most important monuments of the region, Arkadi and ancient Eleftherna. This traditional Cretan style stone house is situated in a quiet area surrounded by olives, oaks and Cretan herbs. The villa is built in one floor layout. There is a big yard with swimming pool, barbecue area and private parking. The house has a large veranda with dining table, pergola and a spectacular view to the countryside and the sea. In the interior there are three bedrooms, a kitchen and a dining room. Villa Gaia is ideal for families, couples and individuals who would like to feel the independence and the real Cretan village life.

Lovely holiday home

  • 5 of 5

We have enjoyed a really lovely stay at Villa Gaia and would certainly recommend this house to anyone wishing for a great villa which is clean and well-equipped with garden and pool and situated in a beautiful area.

A car is essential but there are many wonderful places to visit within easy reach, and there is a lovely stretch of beach west of Rethymno with lots of available parking.

Different shops and supermarkets are also not far away and we spent several pleasant evenings in the local taverna.

Zacharias and all his family have been very warm and welcoming hosts going the extra mile to help us experience the best of Crete and being very generous with gifts of local produce. They are also always readily at hand if needed. Our two teenage children have really enjoyed their stay, making good use of the pool and the internet!

We would love to return here to explore this island further and meet up again with Zacharias and his family.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Villa Gaia and couldn't fault our generous hosts. After a 30 hour flight delay(!) we arrived late in the evening to be greeted by the hosts with something for us to eat - which was so welcome!

The villa was perfect for the five of us: beautifully converted, with lovely high ceiling in the living area, furnished and decorated. It was very clean and comfortable and had wifi - essential when you want your older children (15. 18 and 20) to come away with you! We enjoyed time in the pool and garden which had great views but was also very private. We also enjoyed exploring, by car, the local area and further afield on the island.

We had a lovely welcome pack, including homemade olive oil and brought the remainder back with us, cakes during week and a lovely leaving present (thoughtfully flat and light). Our hosts were just lovely, and wouldn't accept payment for our lost day. We are only sorry that our stay wasn't longer and would love to return.

Lovely villa, fantastic owners.

  • 5 of 5

This is a charming villa in the hills, approximately 10 minutes from the National Road and 15 km from Rethymnon. The villa is quite private and there is very little traffic noise. It has all that you could wish for in the kitchen and has TV DVD and WiFi. The grounds are well maintained, have an excellent BBQ and the small pool is well looked after.

Then there are the owners. They are very friendly and we were provided with a fantastic welcome pack and received more later in the week. There is plenty to visit nearby. The only dark cloud in our week provided thunder, lightning and very heavy rain, but neither the owners not the villa could do anything about that.

The perfect holiday

  • 5 of 5

How do we begin to tell you what a fantastic time we had at Villa Gaia, from start to finish we could not have wished for a better welcome, better service, a better villa or better or more generous hosts, even the weather in early May was fabulous, this is truly an example for people who run villas to compare themselves to.

Tucked away up in the mountains 10 minutes from Stavromenos, this beautiful single story stone built villa is converted from and old Olive oil store, inside is a very spacious kitchen, dual dining area and large lounge, with three bedrooms, a twin room, a small double & a king size bedroom each with ample storage, the family bathroom has a bath with very powerful shower over. The sun terrace has a table for dining out which was lovely to use in the warm evenings. we used the pool every day, and was initially cold on entry but in truth a lovely temperature when you were in. on one day when it was above 30 deg it became essential.

We had the pleasure to meet Kostas & Eleni when we arrived, they showed us around the villa and gave us a welcome hamper of Raki, wine, olive oil, soft drinks biscuits, cake, chocolate, fruit, teas coffees plus more, Zacharias was also on hand if we had any problems of needed any information.

you cannot fault its location if you are looking for somewhere quiet and secluded, but it is essential you are equipped with directions before travelling, once there you will find your way to and from the villages with ease.

To Zacharias, Kostas & Eleni thank you so much for making our stay with you so wonderful, we will definitely be returning in the future.

Charming Villa; Superb Hosts

  • 5 of 5

My family and I spent 10 memorable nights at Villa Gaia in summer 2014.

Having considered the hundreds of shiny new villas on offer in Crete, Gaia stood out for us due to it's character and charm and we certainly weren't disappointed.

From the moment we arrived, Gaia felt more like a home than a holiday let; a place with real soul and warmth. The villa has been sympathetically converted from a former house/shop and both the interior and exterior still retain many of the original architectural features. At the same time, the villa has all mod cons; from wi-fi and air con down to bespoke monogrammed bed linen and towels. Evenings spent on the lovely external terrace watching the sun go down were a real treat.

To compliment the beautiful villa, the owners - Zach, Elleni and Costas - could not have been more helpful and attentive. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by a generous welcome pack of wine, rakki, ham, cheese, eggs, fruit, juice, milk, water, cake, biscuits and a range of teas and coffees. If that wasn't enough, during our stay we were showered with yet more wine, cake, local specialities, together with a sweet leaving gift. If there are better hosts in Crete I would be very surprised.

The villa is perfectly located away from the hustle and bustle of the coast yet only five minutes from the village of Stavremenos - with it's excellent range of speciality shops and small supermarkets - and only 15-20 minutes from Rethymnon, Panermo and Bali with their lovely beaches and myriad of restaurants and tavernas.

In summary, this is a special villa with special hosts.
