The house was a fabulous place to rest. It was so comfortable and quiet with all you could need. Zacharius couldn't, have done more from the basket of goodies and olive oil on arrival, to the midweek cakes and the final parting gifts of oregano, olive oil and homemade quince jam. Our boys loved the pool and the grassy area to play various ball games! Stavromenos had all you needed, a supermarket, a butchers, a fabulous bakers and a great taverna or 2! We explored the south of the island from here but a couple of the highlights were right on our doorstep, the Arkadi Monastery and the family run olive oil factory at Paraschakis. We miss the Cretan hospitality already! Thank you.

Ideal villa for relaxed visit to Crete

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week here. The house was lovely with a delightful terrace for enjoying meals surrounded by flowers and their scents. There was everything we needed inside. The swimming pool was great for cooling off. We used the barbecue a couple of times with meat from a supermarket down in Stavromenos. Zacharias is enormously helpful and hospitable, he and his family provided a couple of delicious food presents, he also provided charcoal for the barbecue and was very helpful when we struggled to find the house after a late flight.

We would definitely recommend staying here. The villa is comfortable and had all we needed. It's in a quiet location which is just what we wanted for a week of unwinding. It has a pool and a small lawn area. There is air conditioning though we didn't need it too often if we kept outside shutters closed and windows open. There are also blinds to stop flies, though there seemed fewer than we are used to in France and Italy. I recommend you have a car as it is a bit of a trek to villages and towns.

This was our first time in Crete/Greece, we really enjoyed it. Cretans seemed always hospitable, often the restaurants would turn up with "on the house" bonus items (raki, or an extra dessert). One thing worth noting, the main road along the North coast does not allow left turns. You have to turn off to right then find a tunnel underneath. It took a while to get the hang of this, and some tunnels are narrow with steep slip roads to get to them.

Fantastic villa, highly recommended.

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week at Villa Gaia - it was spacious, comfortable and well-equipped. It made a great base for exploring this beautiful part of Crete.

While booking and throughout our stay , Zacharias was really helpful - he answered our queries very quickly and also organised car rental for us. He made all the arrangements totally stress-free!

Zacharias, Eleni and family were welcoming and generous, giving us home-made soup, biscuits, wine and loads of other delicious things.

We would thoroughly recommend staying in this villa in its beautiful surroundings.

Beautiful villa, great location, lovely hosts

  • 5 of 5

We had a truly fabulous 10 days at Villa Gaia in Jul 2015 and have felt guilty about not writing review ever since. The house was spotlessly clean and extremely well-equipped and tastefully decorated in a homely style. Beds were very comfy and plenty of storage space. Shower was powerful and always plenty of hot water.

The outside terrace is perfect at any time of day for catching the sun or shade as preferred. The pergola covered with beautiful flowering climber over the dining table ensured welcome shade. Indeed there was a stunning array of flowering shrubs with encumbent butterflies around the garden. The pool was clean and in good condition as was all the garden furniture.

From the moment we arrived the owners Eleni, Kostas and son Zacharias could not have been more helpful, caring and efficient. With a lovely welcome pack on arrival including wine, raki , fresh fruit and ice creams as well as delicious local biscuits and many other treats. We were treated to Eleni's home cooked snacks later in the week as well as more local supplies. They were superb hosts recommending places to go and indeed booked us into a wonderful traditional music/dancing evening at a local restaurant/museum in a nearby village where we ended up joining a wedding party! V memorable and special.

A car is a necessity as the Villa is a short drive up the hill from the coast. The village at the bottom had good small supermarkets and a range of Tavernas/hotels. However our favourite for evening supper was less than a kilometre away in the nearest village just down the hill and turn right. We returned several times for a very reasonable array of local dishes and were treated to a variety of homecooked specialities.

We had a wonderful holiday and the Villa made a good base to explore the island. This beautiful villa and generous, thoughtful hosts contributed to a magical holiday. Thank you indeed, we would love to return one day.

Lovely holiday home

  • 5 of 5

We have enjoyed a really lovely stay at Villa Gaia and would certainly recommend this house to anyone wishing for a great villa which is clean and well-equipped with garden and pool and situated in a beautiful area.

A car is essential but there are many wonderful places to visit within easy reach, and there is a lovely stretch of beach west of Rethymno with lots of available parking.

Different shops and supermarkets are also not far away and we spent several pleasant evenings in the local taverna.

Zacharias and all his family have been very warm and welcoming hosts going the extra mile to help us experience the best of Crete and being very generous with gifts of local produce. They are also always readily at hand if needed. Our two teenage children have really enjoyed their stay, making good use of the pool and the internet!

We would love to return here to explore this island further and meet up again with Zacharias and his family.

We really enjoyed our stay at Villa Gaia and couldn't fault our generous hosts. After a 30 hour flight delay(!) we arrived late in the evening to be greeted by the hosts with something for us to eat - which was so welcome!

The villa was perfect for the five of us: beautifully converted, with lovely high ceiling in the living area, furnished and decorated. It was very clean and comfortable and had wifi - essential when you want your older children (15. 18 and 20) to come away with you! We enjoyed time in the pool and garden which had great views but was also very private. We also enjoyed exploring, by car, the local area and further afield on the island.

We had a lovely welcome pack, including homemade olive oil and brought the remainder back with us, cakes during week and a lovely leaving present (thoughtfully flat and light). Our hosts were just lovely, and wouldn't accept payment for our lost day. We are only sorry that our stay wasn't longer and would love to return.
