About Sara Carter

We are a family of 5 who lived in Burgundy until 2009. We return as often as we can to the place we call home, and we have many friends in the locality. If you rent our house, you will be staying in our home, so we hope that you will treat it with the love, respect and tolerance for its imperfections with which we enjoyed it. We are always looking for constructive comments in order to improve what we offer, so please don't hesitate to get in touch if there are things you would like to see in our home.

Sara Carter purchased this house in 2007

Why Sara Carter chose Saint-Maurice-lès-Couches

Burgundy is truly "French France", and we love its authenticity. This is not the area for you if you are seeking a British community. The Burgundians are a proud people: genuine, hardworking and honest. We came to have the lifestyle of yesteryear, and we found it here. If you love the finer things in life: good food, glorious wine and a slower pace with time to unwind, you need look no further.

What makes this house unique

We were working with French estate agents when we stumbled on this house and were immediately enchanted by its location on the edge of the vineyards.

Having come from a city in the UK, we wanted calm but not to feel as though we were too remote or too far away from civilisation, and this house was just the balance we were looking for: 20 minutes away from major towns but in the countryside.

Now when we come back to our home, we feel relaxed as soon as we get here: we can breath, our shoulders drop and we sleep so well! Our son says this is the only place where he remembers what he has dreamed when he wakes up! For our family, the house represents instant decompression: bliss.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a lovely time albeit not long enough as per usual. The weather was superb for the first 3 days and then deteriorated rapidly but the house was lovely, spacious and very comfortable.

You can certainly tell the difference between a property that has been lived in by the owners compared to a straight holiday let - nicely appointed, everything you need, everything works.

Super house in beautiful peaceful location, well equipped and comfortable house

  • 5 of 5

Great house, well equipped kitchen. Good showers & comfy beds! We enjoyed playing boule in the garden and Bbq most eveings. Friendly bat as well! Beautiful quiet location with walks & lots to do nearby.

Dijon is worth the trip, great market. Beaune is a pretty town, pricey though. We liked Autun, lovely town with Roman amphitheater, worth walking round, it's free.

In st. Leger sur Dehune a great restaurant by the canal, food was excellent.

We had a super week, restful with lots to explore, maybe next time we need to take bikes and cycle the canal paths.

Only thing missing in house was a DVD player as we had rain one night but we played Uno instead!

Perfect relaxing holiday home close to the best Burgundy vineyards

  • 5 of 5

Our whole family (2 adults 3 children) just totally loved the spacious holiday house with great kitchen and bathroom facilities. Everything was perfect - nothing there not to like. A great home. Our kids (5,7 and 9) enjoyed the space and toys provided.

St Maurice Les Couches is lovely and quiet while nice restaurants are only minutes drive away. Bakery and cellar-door / wine merchants in Santenay were the adults' highlights.

We would all love to come back - the sooner the better :)

Thanks Sara for a great stay.

All the best,

Louise and Jens

Grande maison confortable en pleine campagne

  • 4 of 5

TGV to Paris is 20 minutes away by car.

Nearest airport is Lyon, approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes by car.

Access to the motorway at Beaune, approximately 25 minutes by car.

Nearest ferry is Calais, approximately 6 hours by car.

A car is essential as the location of the property is rural.

The nearest village with amenities is Couches, 3 kms away from the house. This has a small supermarket, a boulangerie and a few other amenities.

Nolay, 8 minutes away by car, has a beautiful Medieval Market place, shops, a small supermarket and several restaurants.

Autun is around 20 minutes away by car and has a swimming pool with fabulous views, a gold course, a crazy golf course, a lovely lake and a wonderful Roman amphitheatre: ideal for children who like to clamber on old ruins.

Further Details:

Beaune, around 20 minutes by car, is known as the wine capital of Burgundy, and has many famous winemakers, elegant shops, fabulous cafes and restaurants and a wonderful Saturday morning market. But you do not need to go so far to sample the wine: every local village has one or more winemakers, all hospitable and eager for you to taste their produce. There are several winemakers a stone's throw from our door, and it you go slightly further afield, you will find some very famous names indeed, in Santenay and St Aubin, Puligny and Meursault to name but a few!

If you like markets, there is one for every day of the week if you don't mind a little driving. Our favourites are Beaune on a Saturday morning and Chagny on a Sunday morning. Other lovely markets are Chalon sur Saone, also on a Sunday and a bit further afield, Louhans on a Monday.

For families with children, we know from experience that Acrogivry near Givry is a must-do for the adventurous tree-climbers with a head for heights; for younger children, TouroParc close to Macon is a wonderful day out, and our children (now in their teens) still clamour to go to the Parc des Combes in Le Creusot every year.

Walkers and budding archaeologists will love Mont Beuvray on the edge of the Morvan National Park: an ancient Gaulish town that is the subject of annual archaeological digs and which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside as well as bat hunting and stargazing at night. However, for those who prefer to stay closer to home, you can step outside the door, ascend the hill and follow the marked trails which take you through the lovely countryside and offer beautiful views of the local area.

Swimming pools can be found in Autun, Beaune, Santenay and Chagny - all within easy reach, and of course the canal and the lovely Voie Verte cycle path are only a very few kilometres away.

There really is something for everyone in this lovely part of France. Come and discover the region for yourself.
