Overview

About the property

House in Lagrasse, Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - Probably one of the best views in the village.

Lagrasse with its medieval Abbey and ancient bridges crossing the green waters of the Orbieu, is regularly voted one of the prettiest villages in France. It has a very cosmopolitan atmosphere with residents from all corners of the world and many artisans based in this village.

In July and August many of the villages have their fetes, with music, dining and dancing in the village squares. There is a thriving musical culture in the area - with pop and dance music in the streets, and many classical and choral concerts in local churches and abbeys.

The village itself boasts 7 excellent restaurants/cafés, a museum and many artisans – artists, potters, leather goods producers, etc. and also offers a hairdresser, ATM machine, bakery, newsagent, pharmacy, grocery shops, wine shops and brocantes (antiques). Swimming in the river Orbieu is a real pleasure and in high season and there are numerous water holes and waterfalls to explore. The river is dammed in the summer down at the footbridge which is 100 metres away. The swimming is maned by a local life guard and there are various small beaches surrounding the swimming area. It is very clean and very pretty. In fact the river bed has just been dredged which will make the swimming even better. The Med Beaches are only 50 minutes away and the slopes of the Pyrenees beckon.

The area is a mecca for enthusiasts of riding, rafting, canoeing, fishing, hiking and rock climbing. The area around Lagrasse has many well signposted hill walks, cycling tracks, and also picnic areas. Wine tasting is available at more than half a dozen outlets in the village and also in many of the surrounding vineyards.

It has been a great holiday house for our family. With 5 boys and 1 girl Lagrasse has given us numerous great family holidays where the older children can swim, meet friends, play tennis and football and really entertain themselves. Also in the summer months if you get a craving for ice-cream or have run out of wine you are located next to a popular tiny, local meeting-spot with great views of the Abbey.

Delightful house in great setting

  • 4 of 5

The house is perfectly situated within Lagrasse with a great view of the abbey, a short stroll to the swimming area in the river and enough local restaurants and shops to mean you don't need to drive anywhere if you don't want to. That said there are lots of wonderful surrounding places as well.

The house is well equipped and the main bedroom is really lovely, the top floor bedroom has a sloping ceiling and is quite low in places but our 12 year old loved having her own space. The kitchen/dining/living area isn't large but it is full of character and has all you need if you want to cook.

We had a great time and would be happy to recommend this as a place for our friends to stay

The best location in Lagrasse!

  • 4 of 5

The location was excellent, a minute's walk from the medieval market square, with picturesque views over the river to the abbey. Both bedrooms were clean and our double was a delight. The children enjoyed swimming in the stream which was more like a shallow lake a minute's walk in the other direction. The Saturday market was excellent and we hired bikes to enjoy a fabulous circular cycle with a stop at Chateau Peche-Latt - delicious wine. We cycled back with a few bottles to enjoy sitting outside in the evenings, watching the sun set behind the abbey.
