About the property

House on the Terraces, New Quay,Wales Views Cardigan Bay - Quiet Location. Not On Through Route.Few Minutes walk Cliffs and the Dylan Thomas town trail & pubs

The house is a Victorian, possibly a former ship captain's residence. It is detached with a useful side entrance wide enough for bikes, canoes, kayaks, inflatables etc. to be stored and to access the back entrance to the house. The house itself has 4 large rooms at the front housing 2 en-suite bedrooms - with partial sea views to left and right of Chapel, and on the ground floor a lounge and a separate dining room. The main entrance with a period porch and original patterned glass-work goes into this part and there are many original features to see. The hallway with exposed pine flooring goes into the breakfast room and pantry and then into the refurbished kitchen with newly tiled floors and units etc. The back door leads into a courtyard with table and chairs and outside wc. Up steps to the large gardens and to the top patios with splendid over the roof views of Cardigan Bay.The local blacksmith has fitted the steps with period style handrails and vertical bars .There are gates top and bottom to make these more childproof! They also make the lower courtyard a very secure area for children and great for the odd coffee or meal.

The upper garden patios also have safety rails and a child gate to aid safety. From these paved patios (not slippery decking!) are splendid views over Cardigan Bay, Aberaeron, Aberystwyth and even to the North Wales mountains!

Outside the road has no parking restrictions and the road is for access only. Spaces are coned but cannot always be guaranteed. There are no houses opposite just the Tabernacle/Church.In the summer peak there are car parks 5 mins walk away. We've never had to use these!

You are only 75 yards or a minute's walk from the promenade and views over the port and Bay. The road in front of the house is quiet and there is surprisingly little passing traffic. Unlike some roads on the front or leading up from the front.

There are newly fitted bay windows and windows to all parts of the house. These Rehau units are all lockable and double glazed . This means and end to rattling windows and spooky noises! Plus extra warmth retained in the house. Wi fi is available but for e mail and i pad use - not for games.

The house is effectively 75 yards from the Ceredigion Coastal Path which leads up to the most magnificent cliffs within 10 mins or so. Dolphins can be seen breakfasting from these though we have viewed them from our very own patios.

The famous Black Lion - one of many of Dylan Thomas's haunts is a 200yd walk - 3 mins. Food and gardens overlooking the whole Bay and harbour!

The Penwig further down the road is another lovely place to relax over a coffee and cake or a drink. It also serves snacks and meals. Gourmets are also catered for all within 5 mins walk from the house.

There is a bus stop within 3 mins walk with buses going to Cardigan and further south and Aberareon and Aberystwth to the north. Walkers can use these to access any part of the coastal path that follows the whole coast and then walk back to New Quay. The coastal footpath passes the adjacent seafront by the house and quickly leads to unbelievably beautiful cliff and cove views. In the mornings one can capture great views of seals breakfasting and sometimes leaping dolphins!

About chris cousens

We have always loved coastal locations and now are fortunate enough to be enjoying these.

The nice thing about these is that one gets to know the local people and this leads to a deeper understanding of the area and its culture. However we would never claim to be locals but just more informed about these lovely areas which we can pass on to our guests.

The Celtic links are also dear to me (Chris) as my mother's family were from the Outer Hebrides. My grandfather was a proud Gaelic speaking Scot with a deep love of the Celtic tradition!

The sheer physical beauty of these western edges of Europe are hugely energising and will keep me motivated to maintain this contact as long as possible.

Why chris cousens chose New Quay

New Quay is the gem in Ceredigion's crown. It is a delightful family resort with fabulous sandy beaches and friendly atmosphere.

It is also a great walking/hiking base being on the Ceredigion Coastal Path and part of the Wales Coastal Path. There are sea sports on the doorstep and dolphins to look out for. I bought the house here simply because it offers the remoteness of Ceredigion's Coast within 15 mins and because it is in the bustle of a lovely seaside resort. All the lovely eating options and beaches are within 5 mins or less walking range! It was irresistible!

What makes this house unique

This is a spacious property with an extra large garden on not too steep a slope i.e. not dozens of steps to access it. Just the one flight of steps from the lower courtyard. The courtyard offers a small seating area and there is the smokers lounge - the porch to the old back door.

It is detached - so no noise through neighbours walls! But the side entrance is great for rubber dinghy storage or for bikes or for both.

There is on street parking for 2 vehicles. No double or single yellow lines.Cones have to be used to protect these spaces. The road is marked for access only and has very little traffic so quieter than many roads in the town. The side entrance means that the front door can be used infrequently with less danger for children though even the front door has the doored porch.

2 mins walking to beaches and port. Beaches are all sandy and slope is very gradual. There is a beach cafe on the nearest Traeth Beach.

There are magnificent walks along the sea front within one minute's walk this being part of the Ceredigion Coastal Path. The cliff path can be reached via the sea front in 5/10 minutes walk 10 mins walk. There is an abundance of sea life on view and the rock formations are extraordinarily beautiful.

This is an ideal base for walkers as well as for families.

Most people just love to park up and forget transport. There are good bus links especially if walkers want to go further down the coast, say Tresaith and walk back, or to Aberaeron and then walk back. There are waterfalls along this coast cascading over the cliffs! The sunsets are magnificent from the coastal path. There is also a bus which runs regularly to drop walkers off at the coastal villages to the south of the town and then can be picked up on points nearer to New Quay.

New Quay is a holiday destination. It has two marine centres/ geared especially for children. One a reptile zoo, the other the dolphin centre. Aberaeron is a pretty Georgian town on the coast only 5 miles away to the north, whereas Llangranog, Tresaith and Aberporth are delightful coastal villages to the south (3 to 10 miles). Larger towns are Cardigan to the south and Aberystwyth to the north. There are castles at Aberystwyth and Newcastle Emyln (Cilgerran). The coracle centre at Cenarth.

Further Details:

New Quay has an excellent selection of restaurants and pubs serving good food all within 5 mins walk of our house.

The Hungry Trout is on the sea front serving fish and other foods. The Black Lion - a favourite haunt of Dylan Thomas is a few mins walk from the house and has been lavishly refurbished. Great views over the bay and gardens have children's attractions. The Penwig Hotel has a great atmosphere and again overlooks the port

There is a hairdresser, post office, two small but well provisioned food stores, a cyber cafe on the front, fresh fish stall near the quay, several fish and chip cafes and take aways. An Indian and Chinese takeaway also are found with minutes of the house.

There is a hire centre on the beach for canoes and kayaks. As mentioned the cliff walks which form part of the round Wales Coast Path provide stunning views. There are horse riding centres nearby and of course New Quay is famous for its dolphin and seal spotting boat cruises - these being 3/4 mins walk away at the port.

There is a nice circular walk from the house up through the car park and into the lovely woodland path leading upto Maen-y- groes chapel then onto main rd for a few yards and across fields to the Radar lookout nr Craig and back along coastal path with spectacular geology, cliff scenery and deadly drops to the seal pools below! All within the 90 mins! Just one e.g. of the many walks possible direct from the door!

Great big house in a beautiful location

  • 4 of 5

The house is huge with plenty of space for the whole family. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need for cooking etc. Beautiful views to the sea from the front bedrooms and the top garden. The house is in a great location to the village. I would recommend doing a food shop online with delivery as the nearest supermarket is half an hour away. The local cost cutter is expensive and limited in choice. We had a lovely stay thank you very much

Ideal family holiday rental

  • 4 of 5

The house is very pretty and extremely spacious with plenty of room for our party of 7. It was clean and the kitchen was well equipped for cooking en masse! Useful side access to the back yard to avoid having to schlep beach clobber through the house. Lovely views from the top of the terraced garden. We had a disabled child in our party but we found the house to be very accessible (other than the garden, but all the houses so close to the beach have steeply terraced gardens). 2 minute walk to beach and shops. We hope to book again next summer.

Owner's Response: Always nice to know that the holiday accommodation was well situated and that the side entrance was well used for beach clobber! Our gardens apart from the initial steps are more straightforward than most with a path running to the top terrace with the lovely sea views. Thanks for your kind remarks re the house and nearness to the beach etc.

everything you need !

  • 5 of 5

This is a very spacious property even with seven adults and a child.

Everything you could need or want is supplied. I was especially delighted to find more than enough plates ,pans and cutlery etc.

Only a short stroll to the beach, shops and great places to eat meant we never had to leave New Quay

Excellent location

  • 4 of 5

Great property, we were met by the owners who were extremely helpful. There were 10 of us in the property, including 2 babies and there was plenty of space for everyone. The rooms are spacious, with sea views from the front bedrooms, and from the top of the garden where the patio area is. All you need in terms of pots, pans, crockery, cutlery and glasses. Within two minutes you can be in one of the pubs or restaurants, or the seafront.. If your party has more than two cars, this can be an issue, but we had no problems. The people who live in the street are also very friendly. The owners require a " bond' which was repayed to us very soon after the end of our stay. I have no hesitation in recommending this property to prospective renters.

Owner's Response: Thanks Phillip Glad you enjoyed this location and the house itself. So easy to get down to the beach - 3 mins walk! Also a choice of 3 beaches within 5 mins and eating places again within 3 /5 mins walk. The Black Lion does great meals for £8- £10 with views over Cardigan Bay. People here are not overcharging and the boat rides are really reasonable if you want to see dolphins at play!

Comfortable and great location for beach/town

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely time in this seafront cottage. It literally is a couple of minutes walk to the seafront and host of shops/restaurants/pubs etc. Quiet at night too which was a bonus. Lovely views of the sea and bay from upstairs and up the top of the garden, after a steep climb up. Facilities good although the dishwasher leaked water but this will undoubtedly be fixed before the next guests and clean upon arrival. With a cot/mattress and baby bath provided it is perfect if you have a baby (for saving on valuable car boot space!). Cottage very cool day and night, ideal for summer but I would personally find it a bit chilly in the cooler months (although there is good central heating). Excellent personal customer service from the owner. I would recommend this place to friends/family for a summer holiday.

Owner's Response: Nice response though amazingly no leak of new Bosch dishwasher before or after these guests left. A complete mystery!
