About the property

"Les Ecuries", Gite near Moncontour, Cotes D'Armor, Brittany, France - Quick, Easy Route To Beaches, Lakes & Ancient Woods, Etc. River Walks & Fishing On The Door Step

The gite sits between what used to be two farmhouses, all built from granite with oak beams, the first house believed to date back to before the 17th century. The Gite was originally housing for the animals, and faces what was originally old granite stables. Ironically, the original farmhouse is now used to stable the owners two horses during the winter. The Gite has recently benefited from updating, though has been used as a home for many years. It is tastefully furnished in a traditional French farmhouse style, & has solid antique beds, exposed beams & plenty of character. As the walls are thick granite, the Gite stays nice & comparatively cool on very hot days. The balcony terrace to the front is the perfect place to sit & enjoy breakfast, lunch or supper, as the whole property faces south & benefits from day long sunshine. There are 2 grand Cypress trees at the entrance of the drive, which leads out to the main paddock area, beyond that mature oaks lead down the hill to the tranquil river.

NB: The Tour de France is passing close by this year, in fact, easily within cycling distance!

About Karen

Myself, husband and older son love living here, our little piece of heaven, by contrast to the hectic lifestyle we left behind in England.

Why Karen chose Plouguenast

We chose this property and it's location because we loved the character and age of the property, and all it had to offer. The property came with enough land to accommodate our two horses, whom we brought with us from England. The elevated position, of our home, offers stunning views, which we appreciate, whatever the season, every day. We love the feeling of being very rural, yet being within a couple of minutes drive or walking distance to the nearby friendly village.

Now we enjoy making our own Cider, Wine, Preserves, bread and cakes from our own garden produce, and generally much more of a 'crusty bread, cheese and wine' lifestyle, and the friendliest locals we have ever known.

What makes this cottage unique

We love living here as it is so unspoilt, in fact the place has changed little since it was built before the 17th century. It is so tranquil, but all we need is still so accessible. The friendly local village is just a couple of kilometres of picturesque walk, or drive away & has a small supermarket & filling station, a boulangerie, patisserie, post office, bank, doctors, vets, garage, hairdressers, florist, bar, restaurants, a beautiful church, picnic benches & gorgeous river walks.

Far from the maddening crowd, we enjoy safe & scenic walks straight from the house, on foot, on horse back, by road cycle, or mountain bike on many VTT routes.

We own a stretch of river, which is pretty & completely unspoilt, just a short walk down the bottom of a pretty & quiet valley, perfect for a picnic.

A homely quiet retreat in beautiful countryside

  • 5 of 5

Life here was not complicated thanks to Mark's help in finding our way around. The best part of our holiday was relaxing by the cottage with views of hillsides and the sound of birds. nearly all shopping could be done in the local village (1 mile). Visits to near-deserted beaches north of Erquy in warm sunshine were fabulous. Perhaps the highlight of our week was spending 4 hours at the annual Fete de Pain in the old village, where we were transported back 50 years or more to the old ways of breadmaking and farming along with hundreds of locals..... and enjoyed a hog roast meal! In short, this was everything we wanted (and needed after a difficult year) in a break.

Great stay

  • 5 of 5

Very comfortable and beautiful cottage with everything we needed. Comforts were well thought of, for my wife and I (and the kids). Plus, easy access to tourist sites and beaches. To top it all off the hosts were conscientious and helpful. Would go back again!

Perfect place to relax and unwind

  • 5 of 5

As soon as we drove into the gite, the peacefulness of the place and the surrounding countryside was obvious.

Karen and Mark were lovely people, showing us around and happy to give advice, directions at any time.

The gite was lovely, clean, well-equipped and comfortable. Arriving to 35 degrees, the thick stone walls kept it cool!

Situated just outside of the town, Plougenast, it is in beautiful and peaceful countryside, little to no traffic, lovely views, safe lanes for walking or cycling.

Had the most wonderful of two weeks, visiting a lot of the local towns, villages and beaches.

Perfect place to getaway from it all, recharge the batteries and relax

Thanks you Karen and Mark

Beautiful rural holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely restful holiday in the farmhouse. This is a great place to recharge the batteries. The accommodation was charming, spotless and well stocked. The assorted dogs, cats and horses around the place were a delight. Both Karen and Mark could not have been friendlier and were able to provide a wealth of tips and information on the surrounding area. Arriving on Sunday with the supermarkets closed the well stocked welcome pack was much appreciated. We can highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a holiday in France. Many thanks Karen and Mark.

  • 5 of 5

Les ecuries was cosy and home from home. We had a wonderful welcome with plenty of local advice and knowledge. Super welcome pack. The tranquility was so therapeutic and the walks by the river, relaxing. Will definitely be returning, just wish it could be sooner rather than later. Anne and Chris
