Guestbook comments from the owner

'We had a fantastic time here with our 2 friends and 2 teenage sons. Lots of water activities to do during the day and time to relax with a glass of wine in the evening while the boys were occupied in the games room'.

'Lovely, clean spacious house. Close to everything. Spent hours cycling and walking in the mountains; the castles and views are awesome! Loved exploring local towns and villages too. Got quite a few inspiring ideas for my artwork back home'.

'The sunday morning market in Esperaza followed by lunch in the cafe in Fa is not to be missed. The market has a very festive atmosphere with lots of people and live music. A great place to try out local food and wine as well as browse the colourful stalls selling other market goods. The cafe in Fa has bags of character and great food. Handy being just a few minutes cycle ride from the house.'

Alet les bains also has a spa centre, originally Roman, and a swimming pool, open to the public in the summer. The village itself is partially fortified and is made up of arcade buildings and timber framed houses.

Limoux is a town surrounded by vineyards and is famous for its blanquette, a sparkling wine discovered by the benedictine monks of the abbey of St Hilaire in 1531. It is believed that Dom Perignon 'stole' the process to produce champagne.

A lovely house from which to explore this wonderful region.

  • 5 of 5

The large house easily and comfortably accommodated our adult family of 5. We loved the sunny terrace at the front of the house where we barbecued, ate and played games into the evening, drinking the local Blanquette de Limoux.

The games room and laundry on the ground floor were well equipped. The pool table and table tennis table provided much entertainment and not a little competition. This level provided a cool contrast to the sunny terrace just outside.

The living area on the first floor was beautifully organised. The kitchen - dining area provided a main living space. The kitchen was well equipped with two sunny Juliet balconies overlooking the terrace onto the front of the house. We ate mostly indoors at the table which sits in front of one balcony; the red squirrel which lives opposite provided daily entertainment over breakfast as he ran along the wire into the trees and back again. The other balcony has comfortable chairs overlooking the front of the house. We loved using the mountain bikes to explore the local area using the good paths that start very near to the house.

The owner, Donna, met us when we arrived. She took the time to show us around the house suggesting local attractions and also gave advice about the beaches on the east coast. We would not hesitate to recommend this property to others wanting to explore this beautiful part of France.

As to what to visit... Esperaza market is on Sunday, so that is useful on your first day when most supermarkets (except the one in Esperaza) are shut. It is worth the drive to the coast to see Colliure and Banyuls sur Mer. Recommend rafting and exploring all the nearby Gorges.

A lovely house from which to explore this wonderful region. Thank you, Donna.

Great house in a great spot

  • 4 of 5

We were two families with 4 children (aged 5, 4, 3 and 2) and a baby. We spent 5 days in the house and visited a couple of castles in the Cathars area (Puivert and Arches). The museum of dinosaurs in Esperaza is really impressive, and Carcassone is beautiful. The house is big and the rooms are comfortable. The kitchen is very spacious and we had all our meals in it as it has a big table. Very handy altogether. The living room is cozy and the playroom in the basement is fully equipped (darts, pool table, table tennis, table football and hi-fi system).... it was a pity there were no heaters in the playroom and it was too cold to enjoy it during the days of our stay at the end of December.

We really had a nice time and we're very happy of our stay at La Maison Blanche. We would definitely recommend it.

A Great Holiday!

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Rouvenac ; we’ll long treasure memories of our time there and would love to pay a return visit one day. It’s a lovely place at the edge of a typical French village. The House is very comfortable and tastefully decorated (with some of Donna’s beautiful paintings!); and we had everything we needed. The kids also had a great time with the games room. Importantly, Donna was happy to answer and help with any queries/problems.

There is so much to do and see in the area and this Holiday house is well located! We enjoyed cycling, white water rafting on the Aude and swimming in the Lake at Puivert. We loved exploring the Cathar Castles with incredible views and villages such as Rennes le Chateau and Fanjeaux. We also took a boat trip on the Canal du Midi. There are Markets and festivals and happenings all over the region; we even managed to see a cycle race at Quillan. A Great Holiday!
