About Jan Boniface

We have been offering self catering holidays at Croft House since 1997. We have many returning guests - some guests book from year to year. We hope the spectacular views and peaceful locations of all of the properties will tempt you to visit Applethwaite and choose one of them as your holiday accommodation.

Why Jan Boniface chose Keswick

Applethwaite has a magnificent setting at the foot of Skiddaw and the views are spectacular. Croft House is just 1 mile away from the hustle and bustle of Keswick but all the facilities of the town are on hand when required. It is easy to get to other areas in the Lake District and there is a range of walking on hand - ridge walks, valley walks or gentle footpaths.

What makes this cottage unique

We take many self catering holidays ourselves - so we know what we would like to find in a holiday property and how we would like it to be presented.

Many guests very kindly comment on our attention to detail and on the little extras that we provide that made them feel welcome straightaway. They also enjoy the gardens and of course the spectacular views that Croftside and Croft Corner can provide.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The word that says it all for Croftside is “perfection” in every detail. What a wonderful house it is.

We felt immediately at home at Croftside and wish we could stay a little longer.

Amazing location Beautiful cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is spacious and very very well equipped, the cottage was spotlessly clean, the views from the lounge stunning . A tea tray was ready on our arrival which was very welcome after our journey the cottage has everything and more. The toys and games are in plenty and kept our grandson happy on an evening. They supply everything you may need and supplies you may have forgotten. The views are stunning and the location excellent for visiting many parts of the lake district. Plenty of walks and places to visit a week was not long enough.

Owner's Response: We are delighted that our guests had such a good time at Croftside. The property is only 1 mile away from Keswick so all the facilities of the town are on hand when needed. It takes only a few minutes to drive to the shores of Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite and you can reach Ullswater, Loweswater, Buttermere, Crummockwater, Grasmere and Rydal within a 30 minute drive. We have many guests who return to Croftside and also to our smaller property, Croft Corner, which is just for 2 people. We hope our guests who have written the review will indeed be able to return to Croftside sometime soon.

A good stay in a beautiful house in a nice area

  • 5 of 5

We 've stayed in Croft Corner for 6 days. We are very satisfied with our stay here. The house is very well equiped, really everything is there, even a lot of information about the area. The setting of the house is beautiful with mountains all around.

Owner's Response: We were delighted that our guests had such a good time at Croft Corner over the New Year. They had travelled from the Netherlands by ferry and train and made very effective use of the local bus network when they were here. Croft Corner is only one mile from Keswick and there are walks you can do direct from the door. There are also three restaurants and health spa facilities all within walking distance.

What a Find

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this cottage as a family of four and for us it was perfect.

The location of this cottage was stunning. We loved the peace and quiet of the cottage but welcomed its closeness to the lovely town of Keswick.

We immediately felt at home as we entered the cottage ,so spacious and so clean. There was ample room for us all and we loved the fact the property was on 3 levels.

It was an easy and scenic drive to visit Lake Windermere and enjoy the activities which it had to offer (Bike Rides/ Out on the boats /Adventure trail etc ) but was lovely to come back to the quietness of Croftside.

For us this was a perfect place and perfect hosts in Jan and David

Owner's Response: We are delighted our guests enjoyed their stay so much. Many guests like the peaceful location of Croftside and Croft Corner in Applethwaite - close to the facilities of Keswick and easy to get to other parts of the Lake District. There are no less than 9 major lakes within a 30 minute drive. There are three restaurants within walking distance of the cottages as well as health spa facilities - and fell walks "from the door". As for the views - they are indeed just spectacular!

Lovely cottage in idyllic location

  • 5 of 5

This cottage has the best views of all those we have stayed at in the Lakes. There are mountains from three directions and lovely large windows from which to appreciate them.

The cottage was well equipped and clean and the owners were very friendly and helpful, providing a welcome tea tray of goodies on arrival.

We spent the week walking, with beautiful autumn colours and sightings of red squirrels and nuthatches as highlights.

The local Pheasant pub offers great meals, and there are always high quality ready meals from Booths in Keswick.

We will definitely return, my only hesitation about writing a review is that more people might try to book!

Comfortable and well-equipped, a great base

  • 5 of 5

Croftside proved to be a great choice as the base for our autumn break this year. It is comfortable, clean and well-equipped, and a great place to come back to after a day out. The information folders are helpful, particularly for local walks. We saw two plays at the Theatre by the Lake (Fallen Angels and a riotous 39 Steps) and managed to get up Cat Bells again (via the Keswick launch). Cockermouth and Keswick are always a delight and the local Booths supermarket is excellent. It was pleasing to see that the local shop in Lorton (where we have stayed before) is open again.

Jan and David made us feel at home, providing a welcome pack that included the local newspaper, the Keswick Reminder, which lists all that's going on - as a result I went to a local U3A meeting to hear a talk about Machiavelli, the Medici and early 16th Century Florence. We could have been out doing or seeing something every night, but we liked to have some nights in in our excellent holiday home.

Owner's Response: We are delighted that our guests had such an enjoyable stay. Croftside has amazing views on all sides and is just a mile out of Keswick. The theatre is indeed a great asset to the town - and we can offer our guests discount vouchers. There are fell walks from the door and many of our guests at Croftside and at Croft Corner like to do this and to also enjoy meals out at one of the three restaurants within walking distance.

The sandy and pebbly beach at St Bees makes a good destination - about an hour's drive. There are good views of the headland and it is the start of the Wainwright Coast to Coast long distance walk.

Young children also enjoy the pebbly beaches on the side of Derwentwater which are just a few minutes drive away!

The nearest train station is at Penrith which is 18 miles away - there is a frequent bus service to Keswick. The nearest airports are Manchester, Glasgow and Newcastle upon Tyne - all about 2 hours drive. You can hire a car in Penrith or in Keswick. There is a network of local bus services which access the various valleys around Keswick as well as the nearby towns. Many of our guests like to leave their car at the property and walk into Keswick to access these local bus services.

Croftside and Croft Corner are on the edge of Applethwaite village. Keswick is just 1 mile away. Ambleside is 18 miles away and Cockermouth is 12 miles distant. There are several National Trust properties nearby including the Wordsworth House in Cockermouth, Dove Cottage in Grasmere, Allen Bank - also in Grasmere and Wray Castle on the shores of Windermere.

Further Details:

There are fell walks from the door of each property. Easy and difficult routes are available ranging from low level footpaths to high ridge walks! Skiddaw at 3000ft towers over the village of Applethwaite.

There are three restaurants and the health spa facilities at Oxleys at Underscar all within walking distance. Keswick has a wealth of other eating places and also has a characterful cinema and the renowned Theatre by the Lake. there is a busy market in the town on Saturdays and most Thursdays. Keswick is known as the "Adventure Capital of England" - you can try many "adrenaline" sports locally - or more restful activities. The Lake District has many literary connections - to Wordsworth and Coleridge in particular and of course Beatrix Potter.
