About the property

Stone House in St Barthelemy d'Agenais, Nr. Marmande, Lot et Garonne, Aquitaine, France - Situated Just A 15 Minute Stroll From The Village Of St. Barthelemy In Lot Et Garonne

Guinot Bas is full of character and has magnificent views over the surrounding countryside. The property comfortably sleeps up to 8 people in 4 bedrooms. There is a private 10m x 5m heated swimming pool with a sheltered sun terrace. Steeped in history, this part of Aquitaine, adjoining the Dordogne, was, for many years, under English control and much of Britain's history was influenced by events here. The famous local "bastide" towns, designed to be easily defended, were built during the 100 years war and many seem almost unchanged today. There is a colourful street market in one of the surrounding towns almost every day and without doubt, one of the prime attractions of this part of France are the surrounding vineyards. Just an "outing" away from Guinot Bas one can taste some of the finest wines in the world. Whether you want to explore the area, or simply relax by the pool drinking in all that nature has to offer, we know you'll find that Guinot Bas ticks all the boxes.

Wonderful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We looked forward to a few days break and it most certainly didn't disappoint. The owners , Liz and Peter were extremely helpful, both before we arrived and during our stay and the gite itself is just what you'd want, spacious, beautifully designed and built and perfect for a relaxing break, the gite has all the facilities you'll need including a BBQ and several bikes

Sitting by the pool is amazing, all you can see is fields and trees for up to 5km and all you can hear is the birds singing, it couldn't be better

The area is lovely, tranquil and peaceful yet has all the facilities within reach local shop, supermarkets not to far to drive too etc

We were very pleased we found the gite for our holiday and will have no hesitation in booking it again the next time we are in the area

We all love Guinot Bas

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time we have stayed in this property! We loved it both times. Liz and Pater so welcoming, the pool just lovely with an amazing view. The house is well kept and clean with a spacious living area. Very peaceful location. The area has many French markets to visit and a selection of local restaurants. We visited a couple of local Bastide towns and of course spent many a happy hour sat by the pool, watching the children swim and looking at the view! Thank you, Liz and Peter - see you again

A true reflection of France

  • 5 of 5

We arrived as a party of 4 adults and 2 children,at 2200 on Saturday night. The instructions given by Peter were excellent, the property location and facilities were excellent.Having 2 children under 4,the heated pool was a great attraction and having a large garden with table tennis and other garden games was a great bonus.

The house and surrounding countryside was superb, and would recommend it to both friends and relatives. My wife and I are considering going back to the house again by ourselves next year to enjoy the house during the summer months.

Whilst at Guinot Bas we would recommend a visit to Bordeaux and also Cahors, our daughter and family visited a water theme park called Walibi at Agen which they described as great for children.

Guinot Bas highly recommended.

Superb Destination

  • 5 of 5

We have been renting homes for our holidays in France for many years now and have seen the good and bad in many varieties. Without doubt, Guinot Bas is the best accommodation we have stayed in.

Liz and Peter, the owners designed it themselves and it's obvious that a great deal of thought went into this. The whole layout suited us as a couple but with the 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms would also be ideal for families and we will be returning in the future with our Daughter, Son-in-Law and Grandchildren.

There is plenty of room inside and all the equipment and furniture is plentiful and good quality. I also found the broadband to be one of the best we have found in rural France. A mention has to be made of the beds which are supremely comfortable.

Outside the views are excellent from either terrace across the fields towards Tourtres where the illuminated bell tower makes a lovely focal point at night. For those rising early enough, there is no better accompaniment to your coffee than the sunrise over Tourtres, lifting the mists from the fields.

The pool and its area are lovely, a veritable sun trap with loungers, tables and chairs for everyone. Peter keeps the pool clean and mows the lawn himself. Whilst there is plenty to do inside and outside at Guinot Bas we found the location to be a good central point for sightseeing many of the Châteaus of the Lot and Garonne and for day trips to Bordeaux and the surrounding area.

St Barthelemy d'Agenais is a lovely little village with Cafe, small supermarket and bakery. A little further afield Marmande has all the major French supermarkets and retailers.

We would recommend the La Vieux Porche restaurant in Seyches for excellent quality, good value lunches.

In all Guinot Bas was a fantastic base, a real home from home, for a lovely holiday.

Activity and Interests

Car: necessary

Bergerac airport is only 45 minutes away by car whilst Bordeaux airport is 1.5 hours away.

About 550 miles from the Channel ports - around 9 hours by car.

In a rural setting, a car is essential. Car hire is available at the airports or the local town of Marmande.

St. Barthelemy - 5 minutes

Marmande - 15 minutes

Miramont - 15 minutes

Bergerac - 45 minutes

Bordeaux - 90 minutes

Villeneuve sur Lot - 30 minutes.

Toulouse - 120 minutes.

Further Details:

There are branches of all the major supermarkets within 15 minutes drive of Guinot Bas.

The village paper shop, open early 'till late, stock an amazing range of essential supplies. The village also boasts a small bar, a post office, garage and filling station plus a bakery.

The two closest towns have banks with cash machines and cards are readily accepted almost everywhere - even in the village shop !!!

There are many local restaurants offering good, cheap cuisine and a local cinema which also shows English films.

Close to the county town of Agen (45 minutes by car) is a family theme park and the "Space City" of Toulouse is only 2 hours away.

Canoeing and horse riding are also available locally.

The area abounds with historic towns and villages, castles, pre-historic mankind (e.g. Lascaux), wonderful scenery and that sleepy french way of life.

Some of the greatest vineyards in the world are easily accessible from Guinot Bas, many of which offer tours and wine tasting.

The architecture in Bordeaux is not to be missed, and Toulouse is not called the "Pink City" for nothing.
