Quirky yet comfortable, central but private.

Very comfortable house in a hideaway position but literally two minutes from shops and pubs. There is an enclosed garden which was perfect for dogs with lots of walks nearby. Anne made us feel very welcome and responded to queries quickly from start to finish. I would go back to duns as it was perfect for a new year break

Superb cosy house in great location

We arrived just before Christmas, and were exceptionally happy with both the location and the property. The very friendly owner dropped in and explained how to use the facilities. Dun's is a quaint little town with enough shopping facilities and eating opportunities to satisfy most without going further afield. Of note, the butchers is very good.

It takes very little time to drive to Berwick-upon-Tweed and then take a train to Edinburgh (45 mins). Or when visiting relations outside Edinburgh it took about an hour and ten minutes to get to the outskirts of Edinburgh. To be honest Duns is a perfect locale to travel all over the lowlands of Scotland.

The town house itself has not only a great locked and secluded parking area, but is very quiet. You enter the house generally from the rear going through the enclosed courtyard. Which we could see would look wonderful in spring or summer. There is also another entrance from the street. But we didn't use it. The ground floor houses a lovely very well stocked kitchen, which we generally ate in. Then there is a main living/family room on the first floor and more bedrooms upstairs. The house is furnished in a wonderful eclectic and artistic vein. The whole house feels very welcoming and personal. Other things, the heating is excellent, there is even a wood burning fire in the family room which we didn't use. The wifi is good, the tv reception is good and the bedrooms are all very comfortable. I would heartily recommend the property and would visit again.

Charming and relaxing

The house is quite comfortable and has a pleasant feel to it. We felt quirky was a good word to describe it as it has many unusual features and the furnishings gave a period feel to the main rooms. Bedding and towels were provided, although we had taken our own towels.

We mostly ate our meals around the kitchen table rather than carry it up to the first floor dining room, but that was our preference.

There were plenty of nice places to take a run out to. Edinburgh is just over 1 hour away. Eyemouth, St Abbs & Berwick are nearer and our first venture out was to the tourist information centre in Eyemouth.

We like to have a fairly simple and relaxing family holiday doing what we want when we want, and the Secret House provided us with just that.

Lovely house for weekend getaway

We hired the house as a weekend stay to attend a friends wedding. Finding The Secret House was fairly simple despite it being tucked away and arranging keys and access straightforward. House is fully stocked with kitchen gadgets, so easy to make ourselves dinner and breakfast, comfortable and spacious areas to socialise. Our only regret would be that it was April and not warm enough to enjoy a BBQ in the lovely courtyard!

Special interest holidays:

If you would like a cookery course, the owner had a cooking school in Paris, and is delighted to organize tailor-made lessons, where all guests can dine.

Anne also has Shetland ponies, which can be ridden or carriage driven. If you would like to go on a picnic, or organize another special occasion, that can be done.


Beaches are twenty to thirty minutes by car. St Abbs Head is a special National Trust reserve, where you can also dive. Fishing trips can be organized from Coldingham. Berwick Swans can be seen at Tweedmouth. The Farne islands and the Bass Rock have wonderful trips for bird watchers.


Edinburgh and Newcastle airports are almost equidistant, roughly 1 1/2 drive. Berwick-upon-Tweed has a very good East Coast train service, and there is a connecting bus service to Duns. Car hire is available from all these destinations.


Edinburgh is 43 miles, Kelso is 18 miles, Berwick is 18 miles. There are lots of historic houses, including Manderston, Mellerstain, Abbotsford all within thirty minutes drive.

Further Details:

Duns Market Square has a Fish n Fine foods, a game dealer, banks, chemist, a couple of bistros, lots of charming boutiques. There are five very ancient pubs in the village, some of them as hidden as the Secret House.
