Our guests say this position is most idyllic and so central for exploring The Peak District National Park with its wealth of castles, caverns, historic houses, and outdoor activities. The market towns of Bakewell and Buxton, and Chatsworth House are just short drive and just beyond is an abundance of peak district attractions including Alton Towers. A warm welcome is assured at ‘The Cressbrook’ just across the road (restricted opening hours) and there are an interesting choice of inns, and country restaurants in the surrounding area.

Pleasant cottage

The cottage is pleasant and situated in a lovely valley with nice views and walks. Unfortunately when we arrived we felt that the cottage was not clean and I left an answerphone message for the owner who lives locally. I do not know exactly what I said in the message I left but the response was that I was asked to leave. In the event we cleaned up and stayed as it was a special weekend for the family. Subsequent email contact with the owner has only resulted in denial that anything was wrong.

Owner's Response: I try very hard to avoid complaints by ensuring the cottage is described and photographed accurately, by maintaining it well, and by keeping up standards. It is a holiday home not a hotel and contains many items, some are new and some are coming to the end of their time. If things go wrong I act quickly to resolve problems so you can get on with your holiday. This party arrived on a cold rainy January day and left an ill tempered message of complaint. Clearly they were very unhappy with the cottage and no aspect of the cottage seemed right for them. In the circumstances I offered a full refund if they wished to leave. On their return home I was able to establish that the real complaint was some air in a radiator, a sticky patch on the kitchen floor and a potato peeler that needed replacing ( there were 2 spares in the cottage, a speed peeler and a yorkshire peeler.) These issues could have been quickly resolved at the time had I been told about them. My advice when complaining is to be specific in your complaint,......and to be nice about it.

Lovely cottage, great location

We booked this cottage at very late notice, arranged everything on the phone and it worked out a treat. Warm, cosy cottage, good quality furniture - comfy sofas are so rare in holiday cottages! We stayed for 5 days, explored the northern part of the Peak District by car and had a lovely long walk from the front door. Beautiful views and a lovely quiet village, but shopping available in the next village Litton, also Tideswell and not far to Bakewell. The cottage was clean and well-maintained and the owner Jan was very helpful. We would love to come back for a longer stay.

Cosy Get Away

This was our first visit to the Peak District, as a family of two adults, 3 teenagers, (16, 14, 14) a Rhodesian Ridgeback and a Border Terrier. We made this cottage our base while our eldest daughter did her DoE expedition and found it to be perfect for our needs (even spare leads/bowls etc for the dogs). The cottage was very well equipped, the log burner was fabulous after the temperamental April weather. We were able to go on many wonderful walks right from the door, and the Monsal Trail is within sight if you want to cycle (small enclosed courtyard at the back of the cottage where we stored our bikes). Cressbrook itself very quiet apart from the occasional hooting owl (perfect!) with Litton and Tideswell close by (great chippy in Tideswell and a coop). We ate at the Packhorse Inn near Monsal Head, very nice pub with a good menu and went into busy Bakewell to sample the pudding of course. Chatsworth House also worth a visit about 20 minutes drive away.

I would definitely recommend a stay in Badger Cottage if you want to go to the Peak District, be close to all the main towns, but want a retreat a little off the beaten track.

Cosy Peak Retreat

This was our first visit to the Peak District and our stay at Badger cottage made it very enjoyable. The owner Jan was very friendly & informative prior to our arrival and we found Badger cottage with no trouble. The cottage has stunning views over the peaks and accommodated me,my wife and 3 children (8,8 & 10) more than adequately. Thank goodness for the wood burner as typical March weather included rain,hale, snow and even some sunshine! Cressbrook itself is a charming little village in a tranquil setting. Very close to Bakewell and even closer to Tideswell (Corner chip shop,bakers & co-op all very handy) & Litton (small shop & lovely pub Red Lion)

I would highly recommend Badger Cottage as a great place to tour the peaks-always pleased to get back there after a long day!

The village of Cressbrook on the beautiful Monsal Dale is a delight and is said to be one of the prettiest in Derbyshire. It is just over a 30-minute drive from junction 29 on the M1. The nearest train stations are Chesterfield (13 miles), Matlock (9 miles) and Buxton (12 miles). Manchester International and East Midlands airports are about an hour away. There are regular bus services from Chesterfield, Manchester and Derby.


Bakewell is 10 minute drive away and has delis, bakeries, butchers, a supermarket, an array of shops, newsagents, 2 pharmacies, a post office and chocolate factory and shop. There are several banks and building societies, restaurants and cafes. Cressbrook is at the heart of the Peak District and is well placed for exploring the abundance of attractions. There are stunning walks from the doorstep.

Chatsworth House is 10 minutes drive away, where the house, gardens, park, farm yard & adventure playground offer days of fun for all. Arbor Low stone henge is 15 minutes drive. The Blue John caves at Castleton are 20 minutes drive away. Carsington Water which offers a variety of activities from walking, to cycling to sailing, is 30 minutes drive away. Bike access to the Monsal Trail - a great cycling and walking trail for all levels is within easy walking distance or there is bike hire and a great cafe at Hassop Station Cafe a ten minute drive away. Great climbing can be found at Froggatt Edge 15 minutes away. David Mellor Design is located at Hathersage, 20 minutes away.

Full payment is required for bookings taken up to eight weeks before arrival. When booking further in a advance a deposit of a third of the rental is asked for with the balance payable 7 weeks before arrival. Please pay by cheque or bank transfer.
The rental includes Wi Fi, central heating, power, initial supplies for the log-burner and bed linen and towels. Dogs are most welcome at a cover charge of £25 each. Early check in at 1pm and late checkout at 12 noon often available at £25 each. £40 Good housekeeping bond, promptly returned when cottage left in good order.

  • Notes on accommodation: The cottage is a good choice for families with older children and for walkers, cyclists and climbers with the Monsal Trail and excellent climbing at Ravens Tor and Water Cum Jolly close by. It’s also perfect for that special romantic break. Set in the heart of Cressbrook, a conservation village. It has breathtaking views of Monsal Dale and beyond, and lies in a Site of Special Scientific Interest with diverse wildflowers and wildlife. All the rooms have amazing rural views. It is an opportunity to stay in a cottage of National Importance without National Trust charges! Wildlife and wildflowers abound and many guests do spot a Badger! Outside: The front terraced garden gets the sun all day and has breathtaking views along Monsal Dale, it’s an ideal spot to sip a glass of wine whilst watching the birds of prey swoop along the dale, The stepped path may not be suitable for the elderly or those with walking difficulties. The paved rear patio is walled and gated and is secure for dogs. It has patio table and chairs,washing line . Cycles may be stored here but they will not be under cover. Utility Room: There is a washing line outside Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The cottage is thoroughly cleaned for each booking and Wi Fi, central heating, linen, towels and initial supplies for the log burner during the cooler months are included in the rental.
