La Métairie Holiday Home, Stone Cottage with Heated Pool and large Garden

Updated: 06-Oct-2016
La Métairie in La Jousseliniere, Nr. Fontenay-le-Comte, Vendee - Hamlet Location, Surrounded by lovely Countryside

La Métairie Holiday home is a newly renovated stone cottage that has retained many of its original features - with exposed stone walls, oaks beams and wooden staircase. Outside, there is even a working bread oven!

The main feature of this house is the fantastic heated swimming pool - set in a private walled courtyard, and with many sun loungers, a BBQ and dining area - great for families! The 9m x 4.5m pool is heated from May until the end of September.

The house is well equipped with everything that you would need for a comfortable Holiday - with all bed linens and towels provided. (Except pool towels). The owners live on-site, so will be there to offer advice about where to visit and share a glass or two of the local wine.

The ground floor is tiled throughout and has radiators and a wood burner for the cooler winter months. The house has three bedrooms and can cater for up to 7 guests, plus a baby in a cot. The main bedroom has a four-poster bed, the ground floor bedroom has two single beds, and the third bedroom has a double and single bed (accessed through the main bedroom on the first floor).

The shower and WC are on the ground floor next to the TV lounge (TV with UK free-to-air TV channels). The kitchen and dining area are open plan. Wi-Fi is available in the house and pool area.

Outside there is a large, gently sloping garden laid mainly to lawns, and a quiet seating area behind the house.

The owners live on site, and offer a meal service once a week - preparing local specialities such as Vendeen ham & Mogettes (white beans) or Moules & Frites. A 4 course meal is 20€ for adults and 12€ for children and can be booked upon arrival.

A great family holiday

  • 4 of 5

The holiday home had everything you would need for a great holiday for a family of 5. The swimming pool and it's enclosure was a great place to spend the afternoon / early evening after a day visiting the many attractions within a 45 minute drive. A bonus was the large garden with hammock which provided another shaded area to escape the sun and lose yourself in your book

The holiday home was in a small quiet hamlet and a 5 minute bike ride for our children to the local village to pick up your daily baguette.

Would definitely go back!

Charming rustic get away from it all holiday home

  • 4 of 5

We are a family of 4 who stayed for 1 week at the end of July. The property has everything you need and is clean and tidy. Valerie and David provide a very warm welcome with lots of tips on things to do and places to go. They were very helpful and keen to ensure we enjoyed our stay. The highlight of the property is the pool and I don't think the pictures do it justice. It is very well maintained and a real sun trap in the afternoons. We loved it! There is also a delightful private courtyard at the back of the property which we used in the evenings. The property is in a very rural area, surrounded by fields which you can walk through. It is very quiet but you have restaurants and a supermarket only a 15 minute drive away. For us the property provided a perfect location to explore the Vendee region and although you do need to drive, most things were within 1 hour. We enjoyed rowing through the canals, biking in the Mervent forest, a trip to La Rochelle and Puy de Fu is a must, for something you will not get back home. The children enjoyed the water park, but it is very expensive for what is there and not quite how it appears on the leaflets. Overall we had a great week and would recommend La Metairie to anybody who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle and explore the region.

Smart, clean and family friendly

  • 4 of 5

On arrival David was waiting to great us and show us around the property. He was really helpful and informative. The gite itself was clean and tidy and had all the facilities we required to enjoy our stay.

The swimming pool is fantastic and the area around the pool clean and safe for our children who are 5, 8 and 10 years old.

The location is ideal for discovering the region and David and Valerie have lots of good tips on where to go to get the best out of your holiday.

I would recommend this property to anyone who is looking for a fantastic break in the Vendee region.

Well done David and Valarie.

Had a lovely holiday

  • 4 of 5

This gite is in a lovely location for a peaceful quiet holiday which was exactly what we wanted. David and Valerie are lovely hosts, we could not have asked for better. They were friendly, helpful, always willing to offer advice with regard to local sights, restaurants etc. On our first Sunday we managed to miss the supermarket opening time and David very kindly gave us produce from his fabulous vegetable garden. We were extremely grateful.

The gite itself has everything one would need. It is clean and comfortable, the wifi is good. There are board games and we spent a very enjoyable morning playing trivial pursuit in the private courtyard attached to the gite.

The pool area is great, again it is quiet and secluded.

David and Valerie offer everything you could want on a family holiday.

The area itself is very rural - not much in the way of mobile signal which is good if that's what you want but the wifi at the gite is good so if you need it, it's there.

We were looking for exactly what we got. A quiet and peaceful area, not humming with tourists. There are plenty of restaurants and supermarkets, lots of places to visit. The beaches at La Tranche Sur Mer and Les Sables-d'Olonne are beautiful and as we went at the end of the holiday season they were very quiet.

We would love to return next year.

Thank you David and Valerie for a really enjoyable holiday.

Owner's Response: We're so glad that you enjoyed your stay at La Métairie Holiday Home. The owners love to meet new guests and are always happy to offer advice on the best places to visit. This house offers a place to really relax and get away from it all - yet is still only 10 minutes from local shops and less than an hour to the beach!

A wonderfully relaxing two weeks

  • 5 of 5

The gite was very easy to find with the directions given. The gite's layout and facilities were accurately described and the pool was fantastic. If you don't want to bake by the side of the pool, the gardens are substantial and well kept, meaning that there is plenty of room to sit, talk , sunbathe or read in peace and quiet if you wish. The property was immaculately clean and well maintained with a glitch with one of the beds being fixed very quickly. The owners were very hospitable welcoming us to the gite with a pichot of local rose and a cold beer, and telling us about the local attractions and amenities. Good beaches, decent wine merchants, favourite boulangeries and theme parks were all helpfully described and the trip to the local fruit picking farm was very interesting. We were told Puy de Fou was very good but we decided to dodge the crowds here at what is the busiest time of year. A tip to visit Café Andre in La Rochelle for a fruits de mer was all the impetus we needed to enjoy some moules and half a lobster as well as bulots which were a particular hit with our eight year old son. What struck us most was the tranquillity of the gite and its surrounding area with the occasional cock crow reminding us town folk we were "en France profonde." We enjoyed the local markets and the local supermarkets are excellent. Given that we like to buy local produce ourselves and eat at home, a more substantial fridge might have been helpful but it certainly did not impair our enjoyment of what was a lovely two weeks in the Vendee.

Owner's Response: We're so glad that you enjoyed your 2 week Holiday here at La Métairie Holiday Home in the Vendee. The location is lovely and quiet, yet within a short drive of lots of lovely villages and towns, selling lots of local produce. The area is well-known for its seafood and even has a wine appelation for the many nearby vineyards. La Rochelle is a great place to visit to enjoy the seafood - and to sit around the pretty Harbour in one of the many restaurants soaking up the atmosphere and people-watching.

Perfect Relaxing Break

  • 5 of 5

This is the place to visit for some peace and quiet and to relax in the most quaint and well equipped French cottage, I found this the perfect place to chill out. A very well equipped cottage with lots of charm & original features. All spotlessly clean and well laid out. The true jewel of the property is the fantastic pool and surrounding walled garden...one of the best I have ever seen in this type of property. David & Valerie are the perfect hots English & French speaking. As owners they are a lovely couple with lots of recommendations for the surrounding area and even whilst living next door, they were never seen unless you needed them. ( and we did, thank you!) A car is essential to get around. A welcome of a cold glass of Rose vino and a chat with David & Valerie was a nice little touch. I would without hesitation recommend this as a little slice of heaven in a beautiful area of France. They have created a perfect get away with all the extras to make it luxury without being over the top or to expensive.

From the Owner

La Métairie Holiday Home is owned by David and Valerie, and the property rentals are managed by Annette Khan who lives nearby. They bought the house in 2013 and the live next door in the attached farm cottage. Valerie is originally from the Vendée & wanted to return to this area for David's retirement & to set up a French language tuition business. They looked at several properties in the area, before falling in love with this one and then spent the next few months renovating the house & pool area ready for the 2014 season. They enjoy the lifestyle here, and have made many good friends and love the community spirit in the village.

The lovely beaches of the Vendee are only 50 minutes away. There are miles of sandy beaches - many with rock pools to explore, and lots with large waves for surfing and body boarding. Many of the seaside towns have Entertainment throughout the summer, either on the beaches - football, volley ball, kite flying - or in the towns - with weekly markets, music festivals, & firework displays. La Tranche & La Faute are good beaches to start with, and then move north along the coast to Sables d'Olonne.

La Métairie Holiday Home is 56 miles from the airport at Nantes and 30 miles from La Rochelle airport. Budget Airlines fly into both of these airports from the UK and Ireland throughout the year and car hire is available at both airports.

For guests bringing their cars, the northern Ferry ports start from 3 hours away, with St Malo the closest, then Caen, Cherbourg, Le Havre and Calais and the Eurotunnel at 6 hours away.

La Métairie is set in the small Hamlet of La Jousselinière, only a 5 minute drive to Sainte Hermine which has many bakeries, shops and supermarkets, as well as several restaurants and bars. A bread van stops at the house most days - delivering fresh bread & croissants, and just a short walk away, you can buy fresh eggs from a local farmer.

The country lanes around the hamlet are ideal for walking & cycling; en route, you will see many birds of prey, deer & boar, plus fields of sunflowers.

Further Details:

The area has many tourist attractions - such as the famous Puy du Fou Theme Park - with its gladiators, Vikings, Musketeers and Medieval Knights, and fantastic evening sound & light show with firework finalé!

The old port at La Rochelle makes a great day out - with arcaded shopping streets, harbour side restaurants, a large street market, aquarium and evening Entertainment.

For a quieter day out, The Marais Poitevin, or Venise Verte, is a good idea. There are over 500 miles of navigable canals and waterways to explore and several ruined abbeys nearby. The flora and fauna are also very interesting!

In the summer, the Tropical Gardens at the Court d'Aron come alive - with Polynesian Festivals and an impressive lake filled with lotus flowers. A nice day out for a picnic!

For the more adventurous, there is the Indian Forest Adventure Park at Moutiers les Mauxfaits - where you can swing through the trees at high level, fly over a lake on a zip-wire, or play on the many other attractions - ponies, crazy golf, paintball, forest trails, and water slides.

The area has its own wine route, starting from the town of Mareuil sur Lay, and there is a series of small vineyards to visit scattered throughout the area, as well as a Château for wine tasting.

For Riverside picnics, the Valley du Yon, takes some beating! The valley is cut into a forested area, and the river is full of huge boulders and bathing pools - quite a pre-historic landscape!
