Beautiful 4 star (Quality in Tourism accredited) period cottage, recently renovated, right in the middle of the town - a stone's throw from the beach, harbour and all of the town's quaint shops and restaurants.

Curlews has recently been the subject of a major refurbishment, which includes a complete ground floor renovation with luxury fitted kitchen and also a completely re-fitted luxury shower room new for 2017. The top floor was completely renovated in 2015. The property was decorated in a bright, fun contemporary nautical theme throughout.

This large Cornish stone cottage was built in the late 1800's and is spread over three floors. It is located in the heart of the fishing town of Looe, set back in a quiet square on the East of the town (the old medieval market square), nestled between the beach, the quaint streets and the harbour. You are literally on top of it all, there's no need to use the car once you arrive! One parking space is provided on the seafront, just a one minute walk from the property.

The property offers 3 large bedrooms (two double rooms and a large twin bedroom with full-sized single beds), a large luxury shower room and an additional cloakroom. The open-plan living area is equipped with a luxury fitted kitchen and integrated appliances, state-of-the-art Optimyst real flame-effect electric stove, comfortable sofas and a dining table with chairs to seat six. There is full central heating throughout the property and constant hot water. The cottage is also equipped with BT infinity ultra-fast speed Wi-Fi and has a large flat screen multi-media TV with Amazon Video, featuring films, music, games and much more, which are all included in the cost.

Great care and attention has been paid to the decorating and design of the interior. Packed with interesting nautical objects and pictures, you really will feel like you are on holiday by the sea and being very well equipped, you should have everything you need for a wonderful and relaxing break at Curlews.

Looe is steeped in history, being famous for its smuggling heritage. You can even see the exit of a real smuggling tunnel in the building across the square from Curlews! Legend even has it that Jesus took a trip a by boat to Looe Island with his father Joseph as part of a pilgrimage (this was featured in an episode of 'Time Team'). Find out about this and Looe's fascinating history in the town's museum (opposite Curlews).

Looe is perfectly located for exploring the joys of Cornwall (its close to Plymouth, so easy to reach and a perfect base to explore both Cornwall and Devon), is extremely easy to reach by London from train (a direct link runs from Paddington to Liskeard, with a very pretty short train journey alongside the river on the branch line to Looe), meaning that a car is not actually necessary to enjoy a break at Curlews. The town itself is very picturesque with its old quaint streets and historic architecture, lovely sandy beach and beautiful harbour and river and it nestles in amongst some of the country's finest landscapes, slap bang in the middle of the stunning South West Coastal Path.

A summer holiday in Looe can be a delight, but this part of the country truly is beautiful any time of the year. In fact a winter break in this part of the country gives you the beauty (if not more beautiful - it is really peaceful and tranquil in the winter) without all the hustle and bustle of the summer months. Did you know that towards the end of February it gets darker a whole hour and half later than in London - reason in itself to take a winter break here!

Prices are inclusive of all linen (other than towels, which can be provided upon request), utilities and seafront parking. Well-behaved dogs are welcome (ground floor only) by appointment.

I live in Hertfordshire and work as an executive assistant for a large London city insurance company. I bought Curlews in 2008 as base to eventually retire to. I am not a property investor and this is the only property that I own (with a mortgage!).

Why Julie chose South East Cornwall

I have loved Cornwall and Looe for many years. I decided to buy a property in Looe after taking several holidays in Looe, particularly over New Year (which is a must, Looe really is THE best place to spend New Year). I love the atmosphere of the town, the quaint shops and pubs, the stunning scenery and walks and being only just into Cornwall it is a really great base to visit this beautiful part of the country.

What makes this cottage unique

Curlews Cottage is really easy to reach by train - you can even get there for last orders if you travel from London after work! Its location is superb - you are right in the middle of everything - the beach, the harbour, the shops, the pubs and fabulous restaurants, but the set-back courtyard location makes it a peaceful retreat. It also has parking - something that is in very short supply in the town!

Looe is very famous for the quality of its fish. Its small harbour means that only day boats can land here, so you can rest-assured that the fish caught around the coast of Looe really is fresh! Look out for Looe Bay fish in some of London's swankiest restaurants! But never mind those, there are some fabulous seafood restaurants in Looe that you must try whilst you visit. No need to for a cab home either if you stay at Curlews, it's just a short stagger from all of the towns pubs and restaurants!

For those made of sterner stuff, why not try your hand at catching your own - regular mackerel fishing trips and longer day trips run from the harbour, or for the budding chefs, buy your own at Pengelley's fishmongers on the quay!

Special interest holidays:

The cottage is ideally situated for walkers, with some breathtaking walks on your doorstep (it is very close to some of the stunning National Trust walks including the South West coastal path and nearby Bodmin Moor). It is also a popular location choice for those interested in horse-riding, fishing, shark fishing, scuba diving and sailing.

Coast/Beach:

The property is located literally just a one minute walk from the beach and harbour and is close to the stunning South West Coastal Path for some spectacular walks. Polperro and the Eden Project are a short drive away.

Travel:

The nearest train station is Looe, which is a ten minute walk from the property. This is a branch line from Liskeard, with a regular train service operating directly to and from London. It is a beautiful journey as much of the route runs along the coast.

Distances:

As Looe is only just into Cornwall, it is very close to Plymouth and approximately a 4 hour drive from London (in good traffic. It is recommended that you travel very early morning to avoid traffic, particularly in peak season).

Further Details:

All facilities are on your doorstep - some fantastic restaurants, serving the highly acclaimed freshly caught Looe bay fish / quaint shops and supermarkets and many local pubs. Also a perfect location from which to explore the delights of Cornwall and Devon. Easy access to the Devon Highway and the south west coastal railway line.

  • This gorgeous luxury shower room has just been completely renovated for 2017 and includes a large walk-in shower with a large rain shower head. There is a toilet and sink in the room and also a cupboard room housing a washing machine and tumble drier for guests' use. There is a further separate small cloakroom with a toilet and sink on this floor. (note: the property does not have a bath)

  • Description of sleeping capacity: Sleeps 6 (3 Bedrooms) Notes on bedrooms: The bedrooms are set over two floors. There is a large double bedroom on the first floor with a feature fireplace and close to the shower room (more suitable for older people than the other double bedroom), a futher double-bedroom on the 2nd floor, with a feature exposed stone wall and views over the rooftops to the hills. A further twin bedroom is also on the 2nd floor, furnished with two full-sized single beds, spaced well apart, so plenty of room for 2 adults sharing the room. This room is packed with toys, games and books to delight and occupy the kids. The top floor was completely renovated in 2015. The property sleeps 6 comfortably.

Notes on accommodation: Well-behaved dogs are permitted (on the ground floor only) - there is a £40 surcharge for dogs. Outside: There is no outside area, as the property is in the middle of the town. Most properties in the town do not have any outside space as the town was originally built on reclaimed land from the sea so the buildings are close together. Your outside space is the beach! Utility Room: A washing machine and tumble dryer are located in the bathroom. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The property will be thoroughly cleaned prior to guests arrival and departure. All linen is provided, other than towels, which can be provided (for a small additional cost) if required. Other: The following are provided for guests additional comfort: Wi-fi, cot & cot bedding and a high chair. What a little gem, ideally situated for beach, shops, pubs and restaurants. Everything you need is at hand for self catering,however the only self catering we did was pour a bowl of cereal. Curlews is ideal for visiting some of the well known sites. We did the Eden Project, Gardens of Heligan, the Looe to Polperro walk stopping at Talland Bay for tea and cake (last bit of the walk is is a killer as part of the coastal path is closed. ) This names just a few of the places we visited. Had a fabulous meal at Trawlers on the Quay in Looe. Every meal we had was gorgeous, fish especially. The one thing we do not miss is the seagulls first thing in the morning when the fishermen brought in their catch. Mind you we were at the seaside.

Julie you have done a sterling job with making the cottage like home, love everything about the place. One little thing I would like to point out is the wooden bottom step, perhaps a little marker on it to differentiate between the step and the wooden floor as it tends to blend in, I missed it on the first morning nearly went flying.

I would just like to say thank you for a fabulous holiday venue.

Up to date, but cozy, with all mod cons.

The house was so well equipped, really comfortable beds, and sofa's, a lot of fridge space, very very clean, and well organized. A real treat, with a lovely kitchen and bathrooms. Location was perfect. Julie the owner has been so easy to work with, always answering any mails upon receipt, and nothing was too much hassle. Would highly recommend Looe and esp. this holiday home, perfect. Gail

Very comfortable accommodation.

Would have been 5 stars but for the slight damp musky odour when we arrived but odour not noticeable after an hour or two. Beds comfortable. Foam mattress didn't suit me though(overheating in bed). WiFi great, TV great, parking fantastic very close by. Although I know it's a fisherman's cottage the wife and I struggled with the staircase which is very steep, very narrow & turns very sharply (nearly spiral). That's all the negatives really. We had a great holiday there and would come again also found locals were very helpful & pleasent. No need for outside space at this property because the beach is less than 1 minute from the door. My children loved it here. No problems at all and everything went smoothly for us. Happy Holidaying at Curlews.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your review Sean. I'm really glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay and that your children loved the property. Regarding the points you have raised. As you probably read in the manual at the property, damp is a very common problem with many of the period properties in Cornwall in general. I have had as much done to rectify the problem as possible, but it is mainly due to the property having been rendered and also double glazing having been fitted. It is kept under control by the centrifugal extractor fans that I have had fitted. Unfortunately when you visited, the fan in the bathroom was not working and I believe there had just been a period of heavy rainfall and very damp weather. New (silent) fans have been ordered and will be fitted shortly. I'm sorry the memory foam mattress didn't suit you, most people have found them super comfortable and they are certainly more comfortable than my mattress at home! The stairs are fairly steep, as pointed out in the property details within my listing, due to this being a very old property, however they are certainly nowhere near as steep as many old properties in the area. I would not describe them as being 'very steep'. There is a curve, but they are definitely not like a spiral staircase and neither would I describe the staircases as particularly narrow. I do state in my details that the stairs may not be suitable for the elderly or infirm. I'm glad that these problems did not spoil your enjoyment. Best regards, Julie

Lovely cottage in great central location. The cottage was well furnished and very comfortable. The only negative was that the only tv available was through Amazon prime as the freeview didn't seem to work.

Owner's Response: Hi Mark, Many thanks for your review. I'm really glad that you had an enjoyable stay and liked Curlews. I am not aware that there are any problems with the set up of the TV. The TV has standard terrestrial channels and guests are also provided free of charge with a full Amazon package, which includes catch up TV for BBC and ITV channels, together with a library of films and music, accessed via on-screen apps. Full instructions for use are found in the cottage manual, together with my number in case of any problems. I will of course check that it is all working as it should be. Julie

Beautiful cottage

Really lovely cottage - near the beach and loads of great places to eat -town was very busy over the Bank Holiday weekend, but a little quieter during the week.

Winding staircase may not be suitable for all, but the quality of everything within the cottage is first class

A lovely week with all the family (5 adults, one baby and a dog!)

Great property in fantastic location

We stayed in this cottage with our 2 year old and 8 month old baby. It was a fantastic location - lots of shops and restaurants on the doorstep and the beach was a few minuteswalk away. The property was clean and decorated to a high standard and we were able to move a few things around and make and it toddler proof relatively easily! Good wi-fi provided and Amazon TV was a bonus. Would highly recommend!

The standard changeover day, other than for short breaks is a Friday.

A £200 security deposit is required which is refunded to guests within a month of departure. Costs of any damages or breakages incurred / non-return of keys and or parking permit and any exceptional cleaning costs will be automatically deducted from this security deposit. Additional costs for cleaning will be charged should it be found that guests have smoked in the property.

A security deposit of £250 is required for the New Year week.

Changeover Day:
Saturday (may occasionally differ for short breaks and Christmas and New Year weeks).

Notes on prices:
Please note that short breaks (3 nights) and weekly prices (7 nights) are all listed in the pricing schedule. Weekly prices for low season breaks start from £285.
