About the Owner

My husband and I live in West Sussex. We have been coming for holidays in Torcross for the past 35 years, and have always loved the area. We have two labradors who also love the beach and all the beautiful coastal walks. My husband has a sailing dinghy which has spent many days on the sea here (the East facing beach means that the sea is usually calm, and makes launching easy). Our son and daughter always came with us when they were young, and (now in their mid thirties) they still enjoy Torcross. Our son also likes the idea that Torcross is only 20-30 minutes from Bantham sands, which is probably the best surfing beach in South Devon.

We are now retired, and have just bought Hazel Cot, to allow us to spend more time in Torcross.

Cosy cottage between the Ley and the sea

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at your lovely cottage overlooking the Ley in Torcross. As soon as we walked in the door it felt like home. The cottage has been furnished to a very high standard with everything we could possibly need during our stay and it was spotlessly clean. The beds were comfortable and the window seat in the main bedroom was a lovely spot to sit and watch the swans and other birds going about their business.

We enjoyed walking with our dogs straight from the cottage onto the coastal paths and the beach, which is dog friendly all year round. There was a local shop close by, and a farm shop half a mile away in the local garden centre. We ate a various local hostelries including the Start Bay Inn on he sea front which was excellent.

We will definitely be booking the cottage again soon to enjoy more of the beautiful countryside and coastal paths in the area.

Thank you Morag and Peter for sharing your gorgeous cottage.

Comfortable, warm and friendly cottage

  • 5 of 5

This is the fourth time we have come back to Hazelcot, with another stay booked for October 16! We love the homeliness of the cottage - it is warm, inviting, cosy and clean and located in a idyllic spot to enjoy Torcross itself as well Dartmouth, Salcombe and Kingsbridge. The kitchen has recently been refurbished and looks great. We enjoyed eating a hearty breakfast at the Sea Breeze or Stokeley's Farm just up the road and evening meals in the Start Bay Inn or 'The Shack' (BYO) down at Beesands which serves freshly caught fish daily. Our five year old daughter loves playing on the beach and feeding the ducks on the Ley. A beautiful spot for a getaway break.

A seaside idyll

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a very laidback and lazy week at Hazel Cot in Torcross. It is a very comfortable cottage in the heart of Torcross only a few strides from the shore of Start Bay. The cottage is very homely and furnished to a high standard. Torcross is an ideal base for touring the South Hams district of Devon. There are many very good pubs around serving local foods to a high standard. Start Bay itself is a bay of 3 miles or so. The waters are crystal clear and dogs are allowed on it all year round so it great that dogs are allowed to stay in the cottage. We are already planning next years visit!

Wonderful!!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a week in Hazel Cot. What a lovely cottage - cosy and in the most amazing location with wonderful views across the Ley. The cottage was spotless on arrival and was very homely. The bed is very comfortable! The enclosed courtyard was ideal for our little terrier who is a bit of a Houdini! Torcross is a great base for exploring the South West Coastal Path. Would highly recommend this cottage!!

Lovely Cottage

  • 4 of 5

Thank you for letting us use your lovely cottage for our holiday. What a wonderful position over looking the Ley with all the ducks and swans. Very peaceful. Loved sitting in the window seat in the bedroom watching the sun go down. The beach was just a few steps away. The dogs loved it. Your cottage was so handy for visiting lots of places. Found the beaches at East Portlemouth (when the tide was out) was wonderful for the dogs to have a great run. We found the cottage spotlessly clean & cosy. I think if I had to find a negative would be the shared courtyard was only just big enough for a bistro table and chairs and it was luck that we had it to ourselves otherwise it would have been a problem with the dogs.

Hazel Cot Torcross

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely cottage to use as a base to explore South Devon and Dartmoor.

Hazel Cot is cosy and comfortable with all the facilities you could wish. It felt homely as soon as we walked in.

Torcross is a lovely setting for both the beach and countryside. The Start Bay Inn is a must to try the sea food.

We had a very enjoyable week.

Location

From the Owner

We bought Hazel Cot towards the end of 2013. We first heard about it three years ago, through friends living in Torcross, and found that it was such a nice friendly, homely, little cottage, that someday we would have to try and find a way of owning it! We have now managed to do that, but will have to let it out for much of the year to help pay for it! We find that Torcross is a very unspoilt area of the country, with beautiful scenery, and many interesting towns and villages nearby. There is a lot of history to the area, and it is quite close to lovely places like Dartmouth, Salcombe, Plymouth, Dartmoor, and all the little coastal inlets down the South Devon coast.

Facilities

From the Owner

We find that Hazel Cot is a very comfortable, relaxing place to stay. You can walk out of the back door, and within about 30metres you are on the sea front, without going near a road. You can then walk 100m along to the Start Bay Inn or the Boat House to enjoy good food and drinks, or go 150 m the other way to the village store, where you can buy most things you need. Or of course, you can go straight onto the beach! If you keep on going along the front in either direction, you are on the coastal path, and can keep on going to Dartmouth in one direction, or Salcombe in the other (or further if you want to!).
